Hi! I'm new to the TAS stuff, and I have a problem: When I have recorded a file (.fm2 I suppose) of me playing Super Mario Bros. on fceux 2.12 or 2.14 (tried both) and when I click play movie and then Record AVI and it says what the file name should be and location; where I should save it. When I'm ready with that I click ok, then it just comes on the screen: ERROR writing AVI file. Please, I really would like some help! :)

First off, hello and welcome to tasvideos! Enjoy your stay As for your problem, the only thing I could think of is that you've neglected to set a codec or didn't set it up properly (e.g. using a resolution the codec cannot handle) Perhaps one of the encoders can help you more there.

Sorry, I feel like an idiot. I didn't understand that much of what you said. This is the problem that I get: http://img822.imageshack.us/img822/6880/wtff.png if you can help me please tell me what to do. Thanks. :)

Get ffdshow, install it. When recording an AVI file, ffdshow should be in the list. Configure it: MPEG4-codec, mode: 100% quality or H.264 (not the lossless one if you upload your video to Youtube), mode: quantizer 1. Hope that helped.

But it won't even let me choose what codec I want to use, it doesn't come a window like "choose codec" or something. :(

You may not have any valid codecs to choose from. Install ffdshow.

Hi and welcome! What's the exact error message you're seeing? I've seen similar errors crop up in a handful of circumstances - some emulators will complain if you don't specify the .avi suffix (or your filename is otherwise invalid), for example, or you can't write to the location you've specified

On the 3rd post of this topic I posted a link, it shows what the exact error message looks like. I would be really, REALLY thankful if any of you guys could figure why there comes an error! :) And thanks for fast replies! ;)

There are a variety of things that could be going wrong to generate that message. I've offered a couple of suggestions above. Where are you trying to save the AVI file? What file name are you using? (Does that file already exist?)

I have tried to save the file in the folder (that comes automaticly when the window pops up) and on my desktop and none of them worked. I have tried the same filename (in this case just Super Mario Bros.) and then I've tried some random like sfdgnifgnf and .avi at the end - NOTHING HAS WORKED :(

Let's narrow down the problem. Down load GENS11 and try to record there and see if you have problems.

AVI recording in GENS11 doesn't work either. Now the ERROR looks like this: http://img707.imageshack.us/img707/7578/errorra.png :s

Hmm... Have you just tried saving to C:\ or some location which is not a sub-folder of your desktop? I'm wondering if the ös are causing problems in being able to open the file.

Tried that, still not working. Wow. I'm amazed how tricky it is to record one single file from my computer.

I guarantee the special characters are part of the problem. FCEUX doesn't support unicode and GENS probably doesn't either.

Have you tried moving Gens to another folder, one with no Ö's, Ä's, Å's or other such characters?
