Run overview
What is considered a bug?
In this case, bugs do not mean glitches, they mean literal bugs, which are collectables on this game. Note that here the bugs in the "Bug Toss" or "Bug Hunt" minigames are not considered bugs, as those are only worth awards such as lifes and continues and do not work the same way as in-level bugs.
Why Genesis?
If you're familiar with The Lion King speedrunning, you know that "all bugs" is not a real category on the Genesis version, it only exists on the SNES version, so why did i choose the Sega release? It's really simple actually, back in late-december of 2025, i started doing a SNES TAS for "all bugs" but it was kinda not good, so i dropped it. Then, i started becoming better at TASing and i wanted to try it again but i didn't want to repeat myself, so i chose the Genesis version not only because of that, but also because it was around the time that i starting to look further into that version in general.
Strats used
It's basically all on the Game Resources page, but if i need to talk about something more specific, i'll refer to it here.
Level by Level commentary
There is not much i have to say here, it's pretty much all just movement optimization, though i'll talk about the most important aspects of each level
The Pridelands
By grabbing the first bug, i spawn the blue beetle used to skip a turnaround section earlier, so it's a inevitable time loss compared to the baseline.
Can't Wait to be King
On the first ostrich section, if i press left for a single frame on the first possible frame after the monkey releases me, i manipulate the camera into letting me jump off the first giraffe, otherwise i would overshoot it and lose time. Double jumping with the ostrich loses a frame, but with precise movement, we can avoid it entirely
The Elephant Graveyard
I manipulate the birds into allowing me to climb a bone section faster by taking damage and boucing off them, otherwise, that section would be painfully slow.
The Stampede
aura farming
Simba's Exile
I can't use the Exile Mermaid skip because it would skip a few bugs.
Hakuna Matata
It is impossible to grab all of the bugs in one sitting so i have to die a few times to back track and grab all of them. That part with trh frog right before the monkey fight may look suboptimimal but all of my other attempts led to damage in which loses more time than doing that vertical jump. Also, dying will respawn the already collected bugs, but we only need to collect them once.
Simba's Destiny
I wait more than needed on the Leopard Spawners because doing it on the first possible frame would damage Simba, losing more time than just waiting. I take time to hit a leopard right before the 2nd spawner to unload that leopard, otherwise, doing the skip with it loaded, will make the leopard that spawns, attack me and thus preventing the spawner skip.
Be Prepared
I lose a few frames and kill bats on specific timings to manipulate RNG and do a few geyser skips later. I kill myself on as soon as the autoscroller starts so i backtrack to the start of the stage and clip, saving a lot of time.
Simba's Return
The specific conditions to glitch kill on this version aren't fully understood, though from my experience it's generally done by hitting the Hyenas on the last possible frame on a specific position. Also, i have to reroute a few rooms to grab all of the bugs.
Pride Rock
I defeat Scar by using tthe trick expained in here.
Possible improvements
Lag
This game is very laggy at times, maybe with better lag management you can save a few frames.
Movement
As i started this TAS very long ago, maybe there's a few frames of improvement by more optimal movement, though everything i noticed was fixed when i picked this up again recently.
RNG
I need a odd number on the geyser's cooldowns to do the skip on the end of the level. The ideal pattern is 4/4 times you get a odd, but here i got it 2/4, making so i needed to do a slightly slower skip two times. More information at #9983: Akiteru & EZGames69's Genesis The Lion King in 10:49.586
Special Thanks
Even though this is a solo project, it wouldn't be possible without the help of a few members of the community.
Tompa helped me out a lot with routing and strats, specially for my first SNES TAS, but i also got feedback and help with a few roadblocks in which all were very helpful when making this.
Akiteru was definitely the main helper during the making of this TAS, not only because of the LUA Script, but also because of the imense amount of knowledge on the game's inner workings which were indispensable when during the whole proccess but specially during the geyser section.
Challenger: Claiming for judging.
Challenger: Submission delayed due to author's request for another thing found to this run.
Challenger: Moviefile updated with an almost 16-second improvement in no time thanks to a very good luck ShgofcTAS managed to work this project properly.
Challenger: The Lion King, a very well-known masterpiece since the 90s with the release of the first Disney movie to critical acclaim and many new additions years later, but one of them is the video game that was released in the same year of the movie: 1994.
We saw this game over the years achieving/receiving new tricks, timesavers, glitches, improvements, geyser skips and now...
Time to speak about the new category: all bugs!
This time Simba decides to collect the bugs whose are insect-type items that increases health, power, allows you to access the bonus stages at the end of each stage and the player even risks his journey to suffer some health loss in the way with some poison ones.
By the time of this judgement, a new current RTA run of the collectable category appeared recently (using the SNES port but both versions have the same objective after all), and both WR and the submission did a great job exploring and showing more of this game while still aiming for fastest time and to become King as always.
The routing looks well planned too! Accepting this run to Alternative as a new category.
