About the Movie

Sonic 3 & Knuckles has had several celebrated runs done of it, but I thought it was about time we saw what Knuckles can do. Also, I thought it was about time we saw what the Emeralds can do. The result is that this is a 100% completion run, as Knuckles.

Notes and Explanations

  • There are certain portions of the movie where I do something which may seem slow, or pointless.
  1. at 08:34:40 (frame 30885), in Hydrocity 2, I get crushed under a dropping block. If I did not do this, I would be unable to go past the left edge of the level, to arrive at the boss more quickly, and I would therefore lose 20 seconds of in-game time (and about 13 seconds of real time)
  2. at 14:02:50 (frame 50570), at the end of Marble Garden 1, I get a fire shield that the sign post hit. This gives me a better subpixel position to start MG2 with, and was faster than knocking the signpost away from the monitor.
  3. at 14:56:20 (frame 53780), in Marble Garden 2, I take damage from the boss. I was unable to make the third hit on that pass without taking damage immediately afterward.
  4. In several places in Ice Cap 1, I don't charge a spindash all the way, because the ice columns I have to break through are very picky about what speeds they let you through with, and even with the lower speed, doing one partial spindash is slightly faster than doing multiple full ones.
  5. in two places in Launch Base 1, I hold a spindash for more than 6 frames since, because of the way I landed, starting it later would cause me to reverse direction.
  6. at 23:20:00 (frame 84000) at the end of Launch Base 2, I hold a fully-revved spindash for quite some time, to comic effect.
  7. at 36:54:00 (frame 132840), at the start of Flying Battery 2, I start a spindash early, to prevent Knuckles from going into his balancing animation (which prevents ducking/dashing).
  8. at 38:19:10 (frame 137950), at the end of Flying Battery 2, I end where I am instead of all the way right, to get the acceleration bonus from the jump, saving 5 frames.
  9. in several places, during the special stages, while jumping over star bumper spheres, I bump into multiple spheres. This is because it is impossible to jump over three bumper spheres in a row without hitting the third, however it is still faster unless there are at least 7 spheres in a row.
If you have a question, comment, and I will answer it.

Thanks to

  • Nitsuja for checking over much of this run, and giving good suggestions for many, many improvements; developing, and helping develop, some tools; and tipping me off to a few glitches.
  • Dustin for unwavering moral support, testing some things for me, and doing the Launch Base 1 boss fight for me.
  • SprintGod and Mike89 for their great help in planning special stage routes.
  • All of The Sonic Center, for discovering and sharing several glitches that I make use of.

Extra stuff

Truncated: Accepted for overwhelmingly positive viewer feedback. Like people commented the bonus stages slow it down somewhat, but the rest more than makes up for it.

Very entertaining if tabbing through the bonus stages. Lava Reef totally made my day.

WOOO! Go Upthorn! I haven't seen the finished(polished up) run yet, but I've kept up with the WIPs and I really hope this gets published as in my opinion they were flawless! I'd vote myself but I can't!

This movie will probably bring up the question "Is it ultimately faster to get all of the emeralds?" at some point. I think that answer is no. But the way you abused Super/Hyper Knuckles, and even regular Knuckles... nitsuja, you might have competition. Yes vote.

For Knuckles, it definitely isn't faster to get the second set, as it costs about 8 more minutes, and there's no speed benefit. As for the first set, well... some of my times would be completely impossible without some form of invincibility. Lava Reef 2 is a notable example where i can't activate that glitch without having invincibility on the LR1 boss.

Yes vote, I though at first that a non Sonic+Tails run wouldn't be good, but damn that was awesome! I love how the 100% run had a very different route it showed me new parts of the game, I hate rewatching runs with the same route. plus great new applications of the recently discovered glitches. And Air Battery Zone 2 was my favorite, you skipped the boss and fought the next boss with the normal zone music while the odl one was still going!! haha! great job

Two words describe this movie for me: Too cool. Deserves a quick publication and at least deserves one of those little moons, if not a star.

I previously watched the WIPs so I had already seen most of it. I love the routes of the emeralds that are obviously incredibly optimized as well as the unique ways of defeating the bosses without the extra jump height sonic has. Favourite part? Lava Reef 1 boss. Those tentacle guys go down so fast! As for the hand, that made me laugh. Would-be yes vote.

Knuckles this time around... I like it! Even though the bonuses are kind of boring it's nothing a little fast-forwarding couldn't/didn't take care of. This run offers quite a difference than the Sonic+Tails run so I judged it differently. Overall I'm surprised and happy to see such excellence with Knuckles since I was skeptical, for some reason, that a run with Knuckles wouldn't be good enough. You certainly proved me wrong. Great job on making such a good run. Yes is what I vote.

The bonuses puzzled me; there were times when you let Knuckles get bumped around by the bumpers multiple times though it didn't seem to have very significant effect on building up speed... I just didn't quite get that part. Other than that it was pretty sweet, though disappointing that we didn't get to see as much zipping through the terrain... if only it was possible to zip into the bonus rings

Yeah, an explanation of the bonus games would be nice. It took me a while to realize that touching all the blue balls around a perimeter causes you to automatically "get" the blue balls inside them as well as turn them into rings.

Fair enough, though the explanation is quite simple. A player can only jump 2 bumpers in a row without having to hit the third, but being bounced back by the 3rd, and then the second, is still more direct than going around, unless it happens at least 3 times.

Very nice glitches and also very fast bouncing around ;D "Yessing" this, since Ninja Knuckles is something new to me

Although the less interesting bunuses take up a large portion of the run, it shows a much different route and different strategies from previous runs, which sort of make up for it. Most of my entertainment came from portions including Super and Hyper Knuckles tearing through the levels at breakneck speed. The large amount of glitches also kept it interesting. Yes vote

Awesome vid, I didnt expect so much from knuckles. It was funny seeing metal sonic being beaten so badly after I just got through watching Super Mario Ball Z vids on newgrounds in which metal sonic is like untouchable.

All in all, it was actually a good run, therefore, I voted yes. But I admit that the bonus stages gets a bit annoying and I think thats due to the sound. Well done Upthorn.

Apparently others were pleasantly surprised by a Knuckles run. At first I thought it wouldn't offer too much difference, but I was wrong about that. I also fast-forwarded the bonus stages, but the rest of the run was top-notch.

You'd be surprised how much time went into the bonus stages. I remember one night Upthorn, Sprint and I poring over the map for the last super emerald stage, and each coming up with entirely different routes that differed by probably half a second total. Mine was the fastest, and Upthorn made a couple of improvements to it to present what you see there. I'd been following most of the WIPs but didn't see Sandopolis and onwards until just now. Easy yes vote from me.

I still can't vote. I'm glad I bothered figuring out how to play the original emulator file for this, though. Was awesome.

I wonder if any of the glitches faetured here can be made into an improvement of the current S & K 3 Sonic+Tails run... I definetly noticed applications of glitches here that might work there, especially for when the routes overlapped. (Lave Reef zone, Air Battery). Maybe the two runs are different enough for that not to work. I must admit I fast fowarded the bonuses too. I liked the music to those, but getting those blue balls all the time got me bored. Awesome run still.
