I've been wondering how to get the button display as seen in JXQ's Super Metroid 100p run (here) so I can see how other movies tricks are done (namely the Mega Man X series, but a few other games as well). I've searched all over SNES9x menus for something that resembles this option. Maybe I'm just looking too hard and can't find it. Is it there? Do I need a new version or an extension or addon of some sort? I use v1.43+ v9 on Windows. (It's the one offered on your download page.)

In this version you can go to Input -> Customize Hotkeys. There you can set a key for the "show pressed keys" toggle--by default it's the comma key.

Thanks a ton! I didn't even think it'd be a hotkey.
