Its strongly claimed Today (September 19, 1982) was when the birth of the smiley took place. It was signified by 3 keystrokes i.e. :-) although its more commonly abreaviated to :)
It aparently came in a discussion about how to denote humour, it was only realised when people were told to look at it sideways. Since the birth of the internet its now been greatly spread and there are many more variations.

As stated many of them have been shortened by generally not including the dashes inbetween. There probally more, but thats about all I can think of. Also I propose that smileys should be enabled on the board from now on :)

If you mean graphical smileys, I am now cancelling your vote with mine. They look like ass squared, and some people will create some truly frighening posts with the plethora of garbage smileys that are typically available.

Almost. Sometimes they don't have to be separated with an underscore (^^). And the face needs to make sense, if it's just k_k or something, it doesn't represent any emotion.

Obviously, if you didn't read those wikipedia articles, you can't understand what I mean.
The point is that :) is also an ASCII art. And nowadays, often, pictures are used as smiley instead of text and even more, there are animated gif and flash animation for smileys.
So the face I did posted earlier can be used as a smiley.
