After having LttP: Darkworld stuck in my head, I got to thinking about how great the music is that accompanies our old favorites. So (excluding Halo and Final Fantasy games*), what are your favorite pieces from video games of now and then? *Titles excluded, because IMHO, they are far above and beyond any normal video game sound track Oh, and if you haven't heard Dr. Wily's Wedding yet, I suggest you check this out: http://www.ocremix.org/remix/OCR01025/
Sage advice from a friend of Jim: So put your tinfoil hat back in the closet, open your eyes to the truth, and realize that the government is in fact causing austismal cancer with it's 9/11 fluoride vaccinations of your water supply.

I'm pretty sure that Kirby should be included in the far above and beyond normal video game soundtrack category. Kirby games have all the catchiest, funnest, and awesome songs. Who doesn't like Butter Buildings? Who doesn't like The Gourmet race theme? Who doesn't like Mt. Dedede? If you ask me, you can't beat Kirby when it comes to music. The non kirby game with the best music though is (and don't shoot me for this) Luigi's Mansion. Luigi's Mansion had really creepy music that scared the hell out of me as a kid. That is part of what makes it great Other games with good soundtracks include Pokemon Trading Card Game Pokemon Red Pokemon Ranger Mario's Tennis (Virtual Boy version) Puzzle Bobble Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars Yoshi Cookie (SNES) The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening Super Mario Sunshine Looney Tunes Diddy Kong's Quest Dixie Kong's Double Trouble

This topic already exists. It's a good topic. We should revive it.
Super Mario Sunshine
Gotta love that a cappella thing they did with the original SMB theme...

That particular version of that song is called "Platforms-a-Plenty" I saw that on a Mario soundtrack.

I'd say Finaly Fantasy 7. And speaking of which, OCRemix recently finished their FF7 album, "Voices of the Lifestream", which is pretty good, so fans of Final Fantasy music might want to check it out.

Just naming them as they come to me. Sonic CD (prefer Japanese version to American, but they're both excellent) Brutal: Paws of Fury (Sega CD soundtrack is awesome, SNES soundtrack is impressive) Super Adventure Island Streets of Rage (and SoR2) Sol-Feace Ecco the Dolphin (Sega CD version, mainly) Ridge Racer (the entire series, really) Skies of Arcadia Legend of Zelda (again, the entire series is worthy of mention) Metroid series Street Fighter series Megaman series King of Fighters series Sega Rally 1 & 2 dare I say Daytona USA? And might as well throw the entire Sonic series in there. Just felt Sonic CD deserved its own special mention. Though the Saturn version of Sonic 3D Blast has my favorite Sonic theme of all-time - Green Grove Act 1. I'm sure I'll think of more later, but that's what came to me at this horrible hour of the morning.
Kirby said so, so it must be true. ( >'.')>

I started playing Touhou games at the end of spring '07, and since I'm a sucker for great music, I've been instantly hooked. Never heard anything better since the SNES days, not to mention that the games rock by themselves. In order of greatness: 1) Perfect Cherry Blossom; 2) Shoot the Bullet; 3) Phantasmagoria of Flower View; 4) Imperishable Night and Mountain of Faith; 5) Embodiment of Scarlet Devil. (Click for samples.)

Interestingly, I decided to let my mother listen to that track, and asked her what it made her think about, and she described something that was pretty close to the Magus battle. No specifics of course, but she talked about a dark castle and facing the dark lord or villain or somesuch.

I really like the soundtrack to Quake, even though it's generally disliked by both FPS fans and Nine Inch Nails fans. I also really liked the music to Hexen, way back when. Just about anything by Yuzo Koshiro is great. Most Square games (more than just Final Fantasy :P) are good too. Also, everyone here has heard Xoc plays Super Mario World, right? Right? EDIT: Also, Alien Soldier. They don't say Soundshock! for nothing.

The strange dissonance in the songs in this game make the music fit so amazingly well you can't even explain.

Surprisingly enough, dkvine voted "Jib Jig" (the Riggings levels) as the best song in the game, though I'm pretty sure the majority won't argue that this is one of the best songs in any video game ever.

Randil: That album is pretty good stuff, some of the music works really well. A huge amount of my playing enjoyment is based on the music and I agree that FF7 has a great soundtrack. I also really like Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Sonic 3 & Knuckles and Mega Man 2.

I really hate most of the stuff on there. The ones which work best are the quiet ones that try not to be cool or hip etc. The Cid one is hilarious, but not good.

Absolutely! I love the music on that, it's just so perfect for the game. I forget my choices last time, so...: Klonoa 2 (huge crazy orchestral and electronic arrangements), Blinx the Timesweeper (somewhat trance-y and bland, but works well), Red Alert 2 (no-holds barred techno awesomeness) and Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles (incredibly relaxing, folkish harmony).

Ouch, how did I leave out Chrono Trigger? Mitsuda/Uematsu 4 lyfe, yo. And while I'm at it, Castlevania, Suikoden, F-Zero, Guilty Gear (!), Dragon Quest, Panzer Dragoon, Dynasty Warriors, Samurai Warriors, and the first three Tekkens.

Growing up with the Neo Geo, I was enthralled by its kick-ass music. The original Art of Fighting, Fatal Fury 2 and at least half of the King of Fighters games have great soundtracks, with Geese Howard's theme being a personal favorite.

Joe Higashi's theme from Fatal Fury Special rocks my socks. "OK OK HAHAHA!" Weird. It's neat to see the Pokemon series get some love. I don't like the games, but a lot of the music in the GBA series is good. Especially Ruby/Sapphire- look up "suterarebune".

The only song that popped out from the Voices of the Lifestream album was One-Winged Angel. It's really the best version there is. As for great VG music excluding FF and Mega Man stuff: Lufia 2 (totally underrated, best OST ever) Chrono Trigger Shadowgate (virt's Warrior King remix of this is awesome) Super Metroid A Link to the Past Also, Hellmarch from C&C FTW.

This is one of my favorite video game songs of all time. I have this remix on my mp3 playlist all the time: Thrash the Plank In fact, the Kong In Concert album is exceptional.

This list is all gold. Nice to see Shadowgate, I was thinking about it since everyone's been talking about OCRemix. There's one very fun and spooky remix from Shadowgate called "Mystic Piano". I've never really played Kirby games, but they really have awesome and catchy music. It's very easy to watch TASes of those.
