This is Super Mario Bros 3 in Super Mario All Stars.
<< Amazing run >>
This run has been done 1 year ago, but I never submitted that
Emulator used: snes9xw-improvement9
Options: Allow Left+Right / Up+Down
Take hit and use death to show funny things
Why would anyone like the result?: Some peoples wanted to see a full version of it few years ago.
Aim: Show funny things and bugs
-- Programming errors and funny things to see --
- Wall jump
- Pass through walls and floors
- Shells get stock in walls and pipes
- Death in the first mushroom house
- Take hit by nothing in the first boat
- Killed by my own box in 5-3
- Get many 1up with the same shell in 6-2
- Use hammers to kill Bowser
=> If you are interested in this movie, you can see my Super Mario World version too.

NesVideoAgent: Hi! I am a robot. I took a few screenshots of this movie and placed them here. Oh! I also corrected the ROM name.
  • You indicated Super Mario All Stars (U).smc
  • I updated it to Super Mario All-Stars (U) [!].smc

adelikat: This movie is a good example of a "superplay" movie that doesn't aim for fastest completion time. It shows precision, variety, and numerous tricks. Most importantly it shows off interesting aspects of the game that a fast completion type run can not.
Also, contrary to some people's beliefs, this type of movie DOES belong on the site; provided it meets certain quality standards. This movie does and I am accepting it for publication.

This 'run' suffers from the same lack of direction as the SMW run, being more a series of loosely connected glitches than any sort of run. On the other hand, the movie as a whole is faster-paced and the glitches more outrageous (notably the shell-dancing glitch in 6-2) to warrant an all-out No vote. Since the movie also does not deserve a yes vote for previously cited reasons, I give it a Meh.

While I found a lot of this run entertaining, I found there were far too many "slow" moments in the run to warrant a "yes" vote. A fairly sizeable chunk of the levels looked too much like a regular player just racing to the finish, particularly the Airships. Personally, I think what would have made things more entertaining would have been something that went into greater depth for the "slow" levels, getting into secret areas and the like. If you've read through the SMB3 Nintendo Power Player's Guide (the one that was released at the same time as the original NES version), I mean a lot of the stuff they mention as side-notes to levels. Maybe I'm in the minority, though. I DO think some parts of the run are awesome; I think World 6 is extremely well done, excluding the Airship at the end. I actually think the "best" way to do this kind of run would be to use the GBA version of the game with a "perfect completion" save file. In case you're not aware, it allows travelling on the overworld with impunity, and you can enter Toad Houses as often as you like for item accumulation. I'm not sure how that would pan out from a "cheating" standpoint, but IMO since this run's focus is on glitches and impressive play and has completing the game as "secondary" I think it might be worth investigating. Voting "no" with the hope that, whether this run is published or not, another (third?) attempt is made at this kind of run. SMB3 is awesome is awesome and I think the glitches could make a publish-worthy video, but I just think it needs a reason to keep watching during the slow bits.

Great movie but it doesn't belong on a site like this.

Why not? This site is for entertainment. This movie is entertaining. I think it is at least worthy of the other section on the main page.

Tool Assisted Superplay Not... Tool Assisted Speedrun Hell, you can even read the sign in the top left there, see? Of course, "superplay" is somewhat vague in its definition. But nevertheless, the purpose of these videos on this site is to entertain, not satisfy the urges of tachophiles. If the River City Ransom run can be accepted, why not this? Well, apart from the autoscrollers, but that's an issue we have to deal with with every single playthrough with autoscrollers. Besides, it shows of a variety of glitches, stunts and tricks in a unique way, and has its advantages over places like YouTube and single demonstration movies in several ways... 1. Unexpectedness. 2. No stupid music played over the gameplay. 3. No stupid music played over the gameplay (I'm listing it again just to be clear). 4. Higher quality video. 5. Has more variety. 6. Precision in what goes on. 7. It's different. 8. etc. etc. etc. Some explanation of these 1. Just as it says. Seeing something you did not expect gives a different and much more satisfying effect than being told what you are going to see before you see what you're going to see, which is often the case, at least in my experience. 2. You get to hear the sounds of the game, instead of the movie-maker's favorite music from their favorite band. 3. You get to hear the sounds and music that naturally occur during the game, giving an element of depth to it. A number of YouTube videos seem to carry music not from the game within them, which you may or may not like, but at any rate, doesn't give the same feeling as hearing what goes on within the game itself. Of course, this isn't always the case, but that leads us to... 4. With this, you get high-quality playback! Also, you don't need to wait for the entire video to s-l-o-w-l-y l-o-a-d. 5. The entire game is played through and a variety of situations that you would not normally see and glitches are shown off, instead of just one level or something. 6. It tries to keep a good speed throughout all the chaos going on, and the glitches and stuff are pulled off well. 7. It's more amusing than frame wars in which people compete to see who can reduce lag the most, as the fastest possible strategies have already been developed. At least in my opinion. I'm sure others share it. While to some people, three frames that the human eye will not even notice will make enough of a difference to worship the runner as their new god for at least a brief period of time, others get bored of such things after a while, and want something different. This is something different, I am an other, and there are others. 8. Lots of other things too. If I could vote, which I cannot, due to general inactivity around here, mostly contributed due to activity on other forums, and basically having little to nothing to say most of the times, but mostly due to activity on other forums and not checking this one all that often, it would be Yes. But, as I do want to contribute something, I'll suggest a screenshot to use. Either NVA's fifth, depicting red shell rape, or the part in 3-3 where it appears Mario is running across the water. Also, as a closing comment, my mind was blown at the bonus area in 3-7. I was not aware of that place until I watched the playthrough.

I'm sure that used to say speedruns instead of superplay... I'm unable to look through the sites history just to quickly verify but the title does seem changed for the sake of convenience.

Doing the unexpected does not mean do something purley for the sake of surprise. Also going by what your saying you could just as easily say that you were expecting to see L+R to be used and the mushroom house death, or you were expecting the warp pipe glitch to be missed.

The reason for that is because sound desyncs when recording with FRAPS so its better just to put a track over it, also the 'God Playing' movie had music in it, half of which I didn't like.

I think most people would agree that watching a flash video is many times more convenient than downloading then watching the video. Most flash videos I see load quick enough so I can watch it all the way through. Of course you could easilly download the rom and play back the movie file.

Thats a description of a speedrun not a playaround.

This all comes down to familarity, if countless people claim that a movie is perfect and can't possibly be improved then of a course a few frames improvement is quite an achievement. Also after TASing a lot and watching other TASes you begin to notice a lot of minor mistakes in other peoples work (including your own). Also being different does not mean publishing dumming down movies instead. To cap I object to the description 'glitchfest' and would instead favour 'playaround' since they are speed orientated movies are far more glitcher.

i dont get it there were hardly any glitches it wasnt entertaining and i got bored out of my mind by the end of world 2 even with fast forward there were many points where he slowed down and then didnt do something entertaining or meaningful that contributed to something later

I didn't like this that much either. While there were many entertaining and amusing parts, they grew old in such a long run. There were also too many pauses in the run, with all the deaths and such, that weren't really amusing after a while.

I dunno if it's been mentioned before, but I recall seeing a glitch in the original Super Mario Bros. 3 where the player died, either normally or abnormally, and the "Miss" tune didn't play, but instead the "Pipe Maze" tune did. If this occurence in the Mushroom House doesn't prove that this version of Super Mario Bros. 3 is literally a port with enhanced graphics and sound, I dunno what does. Anyway...something I would've liked to see was when you went through the wall in World 2-F (fortress), I kind of want to know if there's anything over there. Is there any chance you could've possibly phased through the wall while wearing a P-Wing? Or are the jumping physics too radically different while wearing one to actually do that?

Nah, in SMB3 the pipe tune is started by writing 07 to 04F5 and the death tune by writing 01 to 04F4. But in SMAS, different sets of music are loaded on the world map and in the levels, and both songs are started by writing 09 to 2142. So it must have been for another reason, or your memory could be wrong.

A fun movie with some boring stretches. World 6 was definitely the best: - 6-2 shell-beating/hovering - beating Boom-Boom with a starman - the high-speed and precision hammers in 6-6 Some things I'm disappointed didn't get in: - didn't defeat any Rotodisks - didn't roll a spinning-nut off of the rails into a pit - didn't create an airship (just don't enter it, of course) - didn't beat a boss as Frog Mario

Hn. Must've been a bum Super Mario All-Stars ROM I was thinking of, then. 'cause that event is etched into my memory. Major deja vu, when I saw that...

I must say, this is some pretty cool stuff. Frog Mario made me laugh my ass off! (As well as other parts) One thing I didn't like, was that you stood around loosely on some ships sometimes. For me, this movie, while being pretty long, has a great rewatch value. Thank you! Also, I agree that there should be special symbols for entertainment-only TAS's.

Very entertaining and a nice change of pace. Voting yes, but I'd love to see an All-Stars + World run that goes through the entire Mario collection and breaks them equally. A seven-hour glitchfest! XD

Is not sm3 on all-starts that mutch of a "new" game that you can do a normal run on it?
