Did you know that Super Mario Bros can be completed without pressing the B
button while holding an apple on one's head the entire time?
Just kidding; that is not possible.
But this is an improvement to the
famousSuper Mario Bros walkathon.
It improves the previous publication by 7.4 seconds -- none of
it thanks to recent glitch findings!
21-frame rule be damned.
Improvements level by level
8-2
This level was not improved by a single frame. None. Zilch.
Comments from the actors
Mario
Mamma mia! Someone should do something about the cannons in 8-3.
They're dangerous!
Oh no, this was not what I expected when they promised to redo the movie.
This time I was hunted by two Bullet Bills the entire duration of the 8-2 stage!
I could barely look behind, and there they would always be looming!
The cake Princess promised me better be good!
Koopa
Hammers are fun. I wish the next movie has a room made entirely of
hammers. Bwahaha! Let's see how that idiot jumps past them then!!
*Makes a mental note to write a complaint to the industrial
safety delegate. That lava prop juice is way too sticky.*
Luigi
I wasn't there!
Goombas 7 & 8
Did you spot us? We were in the beginning of 1-2!
This is the first movie in which we were not stomped on by the hero!
We made it!
Goomba 7: I think it was scary. Mario jumped straight above us
and smashed a coin block. You have no idea how much noise those things
make! I mean, you're watching us from, what, 50 meters? 100?
I bet you heard it loud and clear even from that distance!
And then there are Mario's feet. Huge feet that have seen millions
of smashed goombas. And they make noise too! You'd imagine the smell
would be the worst thing, but no, it is the noise.
Good thing they're paying us a lot!
Princess
I hope they would write a love scene for Mario and me in the next movie.
I mean, it must be quite astonishing sight for the audience to see Mario
come rescue me after passing the obstacles elected by the friends of
Koopa Bowser, but as an actress, my tasks for the role of the heroine
are quite small. I wish I had more to do. I'm sure Mario would love it too.
EDITED: Replaced movie with a newer one! Improved by 202 frames! Plenty of thanks to AndrewG, the master of Super Mario Bros. speedrunning! EDITED: Replaced movie with a newer one! Improved by 50 frames more! Plenty of thanks to Quietust, who made me feel fool! How fitting considering the day.%%
EDITED: Replaced movie with a newer one! Improved by 20 frames more! Plenty of thanks to Bisqwit, who had doubts about some part of the movie.
adelikat: Accepting for publication as an improvement to the published movie.
Bisqwit: Reverting to 20 frames slower, but a lot cooler, version 4 and processing for publication.
NesVideoAgent: Hi! I am a robot. I took a few screenshots
of this movie and placed them here.
Here goes! Feel free to clean up the list.
In 8-1, you can use a goomba to get across, in 8-2, you can use a bullet bill. Get firepower to kill the hammer bros, because that's still pretty fast.
8-4 is the only level that requires a walljump.
Honestly on console, I like trying to get no coins more though.

Yes vote.
I thought the original walk was very entertaining and well-played, and this is even better. Ultimately, TAS's are simply entertainment, and while this might only work for Mario, this is a very fun little movie.
Get firepower to kill the hammer bros, because that's still pretty fast.
Shooting a fireball requires the player to press the B button, which is banned as far as I know.
whoops... I guess get one mushroom and use it to avoid dying once, run under the hammer bros.
You can't run under the hammer bros. You can mosey, stride, saunter, stroll, shuffle about, take a walk, go with the flow. But you can't run.
Sage advice from a friend of Jim: So put your tinfoil hat back in the closet, open your eyes to the truth, and realize that the government is in fact causing austismal cancer with it's 9/11 fluoride vaccinations of your water supply.
Is it really so much different than a "uses no warps" or "collects 100% items" run? IMO it's a completely valid category for this game. So why not publish it?
Are you serious?
Yes.
I'm not saying this shouldn't be published or anything... but this is NOT an equally valid category as 100% or no warps. This category is a concept which almost only works well for this game.
So what? Categories are now valid only if they can be applied to more than one game? Where does it say that? I see no such rule anywhere.
Tell me, how many movies have the category "aims for in-game time instead of real-time"?

And don't say it lacks entertainment, because that's certainly not true.
This is extremely subjective...
When isn't entertainment subjective?
and I think there are even quite some people who don't think the regular super mario TAS is that entertaining, let alone a movie where mario doesn't run.
There are quite some people who don't find 90% of the published movies entertaining. So what?
It's an improvement to a published movie. What is there to bitch about?
The previous movie was never meant to be a serious submission. Since Today is more about submitting an unexpected movie. This movie fails to meet that aspect.

Indescribable amounts of circular reasoning right there... You first say that people can't say it lacks entertainment, "because that's certainly not true", then go on to say that entertainment can't be anything but subjective... actually, that's not really circular reasoning, a better word would be hypocritical.

Hmm, maybe I used the wrong argument here, although it's still true in some way. Which TASes should be made for which games is indeed game dependent. Fastest any% and fastest 100% are however the general categories. Additional categories added to some particular games are generally not equally valid. Let me put it this way, even though this might be publishable, it is still a less valid category for this game than the no warps run. If one of the three movies had to go, I don't think anyone would say the warps run had to go, instead of this one. I think even Bisqwit agree with this point, since when AKA wrote "The previous movie was never meant to be a serious submission.", Bisqwit responded with "but...". I am not arguing here whether or not this category is valid or not... I am only saying it's less valid than the no warps run.

This isn't an argument for your position, as I would also say that "aims for in-game time instead of real-time" also isn't equally valid. It might be a possible publishable category for a certain game though. Some might even argue it is more valid than the any%. They might be right in some cases, but you are not right in this case (smb, B-less run), as I said before.

Besides just saying that your statement was subjective, I thought I'd give a more concrete example...
Havent watched it yet, but an improvement on a run? The last one was entertaining, so this was is probably better. I don't see any reason not to publish this run.
[edit]
just watched it. it was more entertaining. voted yes. great movie bisqwit.

It was unexpected 2 years ago, but has since become more than just a joke submission. If only unexpected movies are to be submitted on April 1st, should Cardboard not have submitted his CotM run? Or did you mean that only unique, never-before-seen runs should be submitted on april 1? I just really fail to see what point you're trying to make in defense of saying this movie isn't necessary.

You're dancing around the issue here. Cardboards movie is a serious submission. This and the other movie were intended as a joke submission i.e. April 1st. If I tell you the joke as to why did the chicken cross the road, you probally wouldn't find it funny since you've heard it a billion times in the past.

I swear, if you really take this whole thing as super serious, you should take a step back and reexamine your life. The purpose of this site is (or claims to be) to produce entertaining movies. If a "joke" submission created more entertainment for the viewers than the author intended, does that make it any less of a movie than one of your "serious" submissions? People were entertained by the first movie, and taking a look at the 13-1-1 vote as it stands, it seems people still find it entertaining. So, once again, I ask: If people find this entertaining, what's the big deal about what day it's submitted on?

I don't know what you're talking about, but I certainly wasn't expecting the SMB walkathon to be improved, and even less by Bisqwit. So for me, this TAS is very much unexpected and thus fitting for today.
Edit: Nuts, I hate nested quotes.
Are we seriously (no pun) debating the merits of a joke submission?
I'm hoping this is all just another layer of April Fool's nonsense.
suddenly, Donkey Kong!

No, that is the sin of spin. The purpose of the site is to produce good and entertaining movies relative to the game. If someone submitted a Super Metroid run which aims for the least number of door transitions would you want to see it published? Sure some may find it entertaining, but it would go far down the pecking order as to what are the best runs to watch for that particular game.

Votes aren't important, reasons stated in the thread are. There is always the yes vote bias for every movie . As for the big deal about the ocassion, Todays more about concept than trying to reiterate and improve whats done before.

You seem to be rather adept at that yourself.

Which this movie does.

And you have yet to state a reason that this should be rejected, other than it was originally meant to be an April Fools submission.
The original has been made faster, with a couple unique solutions to problems. It makes no sense that it shouldn't be published.
And with that, you can continue to spin all you want, I'm done arguing.
What I don't understand is why you're so adamant about it. Ok, you think it was unneeded. How many SM64 improvements were needed since the last 16-star version? People were already happy with it! What's wanted and what's needed are two different things, and I think your argument is pointless regardless, so shut up.

Moozooh and Mmbossman don't seem to differenciate between normal movies and fools day submissions. This is evident since you're trying to compare my points to every movie on the site. I'd rather see a unique fools day submission not one thats improved.

You got 4 new and unique April fools day runs, and since this improvement was submitted on one of the other 364 days of the year, it shouldn't be a big deal now.
