Hello, welcome to my first SERIOUS tool-assisted speedrun. It is a 9-level run of Ms Pacman, like my previous TAS.
  • Aims for fastest time
  • Manipulates luck
  • Abuses programming errors
  • Finishes to last cutscene
  • Genre: Maze
First of all, For those who don't know, Ms Pacman is a game in which you must play through different levels in the form of a maze, and collect all of the dots before the ghosts eat you. I chose Ms Pacman as a game because I like it alot, it isn't too complicated to TAS, and there were no submissions of it (aside from my previous one). I personally do not believe that it is one of those "boring to watch" games, though others might differ in opinion. Now, I know that there are actually about 139 levels total before the game bugs and erases the walls and makes it impossible to beat, but I believe that level 9 is the last intended level since it is the last level before the "junior" cutscene, which is the last one in the game. Besides, who would want to watch a 139-level Ms Pacman TAS?
I made this run as an attempt to beat out my previous TAS of it, which I admit wasn't too good. Fortunately, I not only beat it. I crushed it by 28 seconds. This was thanks to much better routes, being alot more careful, eating less ghosts, and, probably most of all, a glitch that allows you to pass through ghosts. This glitch is done by turning towards a ghost at frame perfect timing, so its very tricky in real time, and great for TAS. Well, that's all I have to say. Enjoy!

NesVideoAgent: Hi! I am a robot. I took a few screenshots of this movie and placed them here. Oh! I also corrected the ROM name.
  • You indicated Namco Museum (U).gba
  • I updated it to Namco Museum (U) [f1] (FACRASH).gba

Oh... never heard about this game. It has some cutting-edge graphics and sound... plus an outstanding storyline. EDIT: Oh, and the most charismatic character ever!

It is the conviction — based on the evidence of your own volitional functioning — that you are fundamentally able to succeed in life and, therefore, are deserving of that success." - Onkar Ghate

That's odd, none of the pictures that the robot put were in my run (except for the first one). Also, how come only two people have voted although this has been out for almost a week? I don't mean to be a pest, but most runs have way more votes for the amount of time they've been out.

NesVideoAgent picked the wrong ROM again and desynched? And hey, have you thought of trying the Scroll mode? Maybe it would look more exciting. Maybe not.

This game doesn't look particularly good smooshed in fullscreen, and scroll is downright nauseating. Is this really the only version of Mrs Pac-Man available on tas-able systems?[/lazy] Looks aside, this run was pretty repetitive as one would expect. The highlight for me was the walk-through-ghosts glitch... I tried playing around to see why it worked; seems like some sort of hit box issue when she changes direction (like you said). If it could be abused more to improve speed that might add interest. In general the routes looked good. I would think you could avoid eating ghosts altogether, but maybe not. I know it's a different game and all, but my expectations were kind of colored by Randil's run of original Pac-Man (YouTube link) (forum discussion with fcm's) which seemed faster-paced. An unfair comparison I suppose... Also, the number of levels played seems fairly arbitrary. Are later levels different in layout or do they just repeat indefinitely? I don't want to sound too negative; I'm glad you made the movie and "voted yes".

It certainly was repetitive in the early going. You used the same route with the glitch through the pink ghost four levels in a row. It got a lot better in the later levels when the ghosts got more aggressive. I own this GBA cartridge because I like those games but, let's face it, Ms. Pac-man doesn't look great on the GBA. Eating ghosts forces a long pause, so ghost avoision needs to be a top priority. Maybe it can't be improved, but I just didn't get much out of it. As for deciding when to end the game, it looked like the level after the cut-scene might have been a new map. Maybe it should have played until the end of that map? Are there still new fruit items at that point, or do they start repeating? Yes, I could look it up, but I just can't find the motivation.

\ Is it optimal? Pac-Man routes are incredibly well studied for real time players because the ghosts are deterministic if you always move in the same way, and if you hold the direction of a corner/intersection before reaching it you always take it on the first possible frame. These routes that get you the same result every time are called 'patterns'. But a TAS gives you the extra possibility of taking an intersection late, pausing for frames, etc. I don't know if this is useful enough or not.
