I'm surprised this game hasn't been brought up yet, I thought for sure someone would have after Bomberman 64. This is one of the most Memorable games I have played to this day. I've always found this game more fun than Bomberman 64.

Haha. Reviving this thread after a full year. I've recently been watching the current run on SDA, but I think a 100% Speed Run or TAS would be more entertaining than just watching someone run right through everything. Anyway, I hope someone starts on a Any% or 100% TAS. ;3

100% seems like such a huge waste of time for this game, though. Seriously, aside from the scrolling levels (which would be boring as is), you only get a tiny bit of leeway point wise every few levels, so the whole game basically devolves in to a collection game. Very little ingenuity is needed. Pure speed, however, would be pretty cool.

That's what everyone keeps saying, but we won't know until a 100% TAS has been made. I personally think it would be highly entertaining. No fun watching someone just running and jumping through or past every enemy. I will admit the Scrolling parts would be kind of boring, but that's what speeding up movie is for. :3 Anyway, just something for someone to think about doing. ;3

I'd also like to see a 100% Speed Run or TAS for Bomberman 64, if that would be any easier. ;3

Bag of Magic Food WAS working on an AWESOME TAS of Bomberman 64. It seems he lost interest, though.... http://tasvideos.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=3130

Might be waiting a while, but I'll bet the wait will have been worth it when you finish your TAS of Bomberman 64. ;3

Hey, I'm new, and I'm thinking about doing a Bomberman Hero TAS, any% if you will. Is that alright with you Kitsune? Either way I'm doing it. Does anyone know where I can download the game? Coolroms.com is the only website on downloading games I know and for some reason, its restricing me from doing it.

Captain Forehead: This page will probably help you with the problem indicated in your post.

I can't see why Kitsune would have a problem with it, seeing as the thread has been inactive for a year and a half and no work was made/shown. ROM requests/links to download sites and such is general bad taboo; I PMed you a download link, so you can use that. I would recommend using the Glide64 Napalm Plugin, and to also use Nitsuja's TAS Input Plugin. If you have TAS specific questions (like how to use mupen, what techniques to use to TAS, etc.) feel free to contact me; I frequently teach new N64 TASers the ropes of how we make these movies.

You both apparently didn't read through these three lines. Shame.

I watched the entire SDA run for nostalgia. I think there are good arguments for both a 100% and an any% run. Much of the SDA run just felt like walking from point A to point B avoiding all obstacles. I personally feel that a 100% run requires more ingenuity. There are a couple stages that are bad for 100% such as Hard Coaster, but I think the number of improved stages outdoes this personally. Both runs are worth considering though.

Well now I got Bomberman Hero up and running, I'll try to finish this run. It could take a while though, I'm not used to the emulator yet.

I don't think I'll be able to finish this run, my computer broke down and had to get a new one. So I'm just gonna leave the speedrun open to anyone that wants to do it. Though if you need information on the game regarding shortcuts just come see me, I got some information.

Author of the SDA run here. I'm surprised there are several people here with an interest in Bomberman Hero. I did the run as lark. I watched it with a friend who never played it and he thought some of the music was catchy and we both laughed at Bomberman's childish "I DID IT!" line at the completion of every stage. In fact, my friend ended up doing a paint picture which showed Princess Millian and Bomberman in the ending scene in a compromising situation with Bomberman saying that line. I think it's pretty funny, but I guess linking to it would be a no no, even if it's just paint. Personally I think a 100% run would be kinda fun. Once I was really bored and did that on the console. It was extremely painful but I really wanted to play that secret world and see the secret boss. I'm not sure if it was worth it at all...but seeing someone pick up all the items at blazing speed might be entertaining.

100% runs are always fun to watch. Plus, it shows how you can be skilled while speedy.

Everyone, I'm ashamed of myself, I gave up too quickly. I couldn't go on because apparently the save states aren't capable of Mupen64. So here's what I'm gonna do, I'm gonna continue this TAS but wait until Mupen64Plus comes out. I'm sure that will solve my problems. EDIT: What is Nitsuja's TAS input plugin?

Although i wouldn't be surprised if i ended up going down the same path as Captain Forehead, im going to start doing an any% run. Ive played the game a lot and i think i have a few tricks up my sleeve for getting a decent run (assuming the game works). I love the feeling of nostalgia this game provides :P ill tell you all when i finish/give up/release a WIP wish me luck!

ThMrksman, let me just say that I will wish you luck, though I've done this speedrun alot on a console, if your missing a faster way that I know, I'll be sure to tell you. If you finish this run, then there's no point for me doing it. I might as well go to my next best idea, Final Fantasy VIII.

The *few tricks up my sleeve* is mainly abusing the invincibility that bomberman has after he takes damage. Anyway i got my hands on a ROM and found the right video plugin, ill get started soon. Main thing i might need help with is the bosses (e.g. underwater bolban) but that wont be a worry for me for a long while

I'm surprised this thread is active again. xD Well, whether someone does a Any% or 100% TAS of this is fine with me. Though I still prefer 100%. xD But really, any of the two runs will do. :3 Glad to see this thread getting so much traffic now.

Ok, ive done a quick WIP that goes up to (and completes) red cave, so just over half way through the first world. Here's a link: http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=VkUUjoF1Mv8 I'll be continuing along with this whenever i get time (got exams soon though) along this sort of line, comparing it with the SDA run, it's 29 seconds faster by the time red cave is finished. A few questions though: I rushed through the water level and it does look a bit sloppy, considering that entertainment should be a factor, and the speed doesn't seem to change as long as a is held down, should i redo it? Just it would be easier to redo it now than have to erase a lot of stuff later on (i dont have time/knowledge for hex editing) Also i have been discovering very minor (<0.5sec) improvements in much earlier levels that im reluctant to go all the way back and change now, would it be worth doing them, or would you rather see a completed run at all? (if i keep going back for minor improvements the run will realistically never get finished) And finally does anyone know of other improvements?

I'm not really an expert on this game, but I have played through it a few times. I'm going to list things that may or may not be slowing you down. Stage 1: (0:29) Falling down into the pit at the beginning seems to me to be slower than jumping, you should test this. Also, I'm not very familiar with N64 TASing, do moving 'right' and moving 'down and right' give you the same velocity to the right or not? Stage 2: (0:58) It appears you are running into that wall longer than necessary, is it possible to bomb it from the previous jump or perhaps jump shorter on the first jump making the second one occur earlier. Is jumping as fast as running on flat ground, what if you're going uphill, what if you're going downhill? It appears going uphill jumping is faster like you've done at the end, would this also apply on the conveyors at the beginning? I'm not sure why you don't jump the maximum height at the end though. Your jump heights in general seem sporadic and you may be losing time by not using optimal movements. Stage 3: (1:38) I think you should not go out of your way to bomb this before getting there. If you throw a bomb towards the right side of the block upon getting there I think you should be able to sneak in through the left side without getting hit. Stage 4: (2:12) I think jumping on that platform on the right may be faster. (2:20) Jumping from the upper platform directly onto the conveyor may be faster. (2:25) Why do you jump for the back of the trampoline and not the part closest to you?, and opening the box appears unoptomized, (You used a bomb to help you change direction?, Is this necessary?) Perhaps getting a firepower upgrade would be beneficial for opening this box? Stage 5: Running downhill may be faster than jumping. Stage 6: If you plan on submitting this run you will need to put some effort into entertainment (though it may be especially difficult to entertain in a boring water level). Stage 7: Is there any possible use for damage boosting in this game? Perhaps hitting yourself can get you past the bombs at the end better? Large issues: What is the order of speed on walking, walking uphill, walking downhill, jumping, jumping uphill, jumping downhill, and falling. If I had to guess I would say you want to walk downhill and jump uphill, and falling appears to slow your forward movement. You definitely want to find out for sure though before you move on. (A bunch of minor edits to those points.) Half of that list appeared unoptimized to me, half of it is just my own speculation. Unless you have reasons many of those choices were made, I'd suggest you go back and redo it. This run is going to hugely be affected by movement optimization, and your movement choices only seem convenient/sporadic. That being said, I appreciate the fact that you're putting effort into this run as I do enjoy this game. If you plan to submit this eventually I'd recommend you test much of this out and redo it. If I'm wrong about many of my points feel free to tell me so. I'm just going by appearance/my experiences playing the game.

For a bomberman game, you're not throwing a lot of bombs ;-) I think kirkq will be able to find more spots for improvements than I will; I'm just watching it seeing the game for the first time. Keep it up.
