I just thought it would be convenient if an emulator had a built-in movie editor. Then, I made a virtual screenshot by using great mspaint.exe™ My Thoughts / Pieces of idea
  • Built-in editor will be useful in a making of pseudo multi-player runs.
  • Piano-roll is one of the user interfaces which allows to edit input intuitively.
  • Input List (left on the picture) may sometimes be useful if it allows to edit a movie only with typing.
Note
  • I've never implemented a feature like this. Also I don't know whether I will do such.
  • The virtual screenshot is based on MIDI sequencer Domino (it's very similar to my favorite sequencer, Cherry).
  • I know a player who makes a TAS only with TAS Movie Editor (s/he uses an emulator when s/he watches his/her work, of course). That's why I thought about a possibility of built-in movie editor.
Sorry for talking in a rambling way. I wanted to write down what I had thought. If you have a question, suggestion, criticism, etc., post it. I'm interested in it. [hidden]I wish someone will implement such a dream feature.[/hidden]

FODA suggested exactly this editing interface some time ago, but for some reason I can't find his forum post.

I'm all for it. I bet we'll see something like this eventually... The idea is very compelling. Oh, and also, it should include an export to MIDI feature :)

Hahaha. That'll make the movie publication all the more complicated; if we want to show what kind of "music" the player creates while playing... :)

It might even make TASing harder, where the creator might try whenever possible to make his run have the sound of gentle jazz.

I fully support this idea because gocha read my mind. I had a similar idea a while ago, but for whatever reason never voiced it.
A hundred years from now, they will gaze upon my work and marvel at my skills but never know my name. And that will be good enough for me.

yup, and it has been quoted already in the "dream tas tools" topic : http://tasvideos.org/forum/viewtopic.php?p=38496#38496 as well as the savestate tree : http://tasvideos.org/forum/viewtopic.php?p=37006#37006 //edit image link is dead, reposted it

FYI -- the new version of FCEUX has something like this, called "TAS Edit"... don't know how functional it is but it's a good first step.

This idea could be interestingly adapted into some sort of input version of guitar hero, or "TAS hero". obviously not played full speed though. Any thoughts?

Is that a joke? The first song on *easy* mode is so hard I couldn't play even the first ~20 notes of it.

Perhaps these could be of interest. People who recognize this particular button style know where I'm going with this.

Would that be TAS TAS Revolution like in that other topic? If not, I haven't a clue.

didn't see that. I was thinking easier though (I'm judging by the picture the UI idea isn't so bad) maybe difficulty settings. like Easy is 25% speed, 25% input in dense areas. medium 50/50, hard 75/75. Impossible could always be an option for realtime. Custom for those who want their own options. Simply feed the emulator a game, feed it the movie and it overlays it on screen. visual/audio confirmation for reasonably accurate hits (cmon, we're only human), misses are also noted. at the end of the run (or when you finish at your own accord) statistics are displayed, such as what you missed and hit, and overall %.

This shouldn't be too hard to pull off with a Lua script... The two possible stumbling blocks I can think of are whether the script will "see" keyboard input during a read-only playback of a movie (I think it will), and reading the actual contents of the movie file to generate the graphics etc. (probably won't be too hard, especially with the nice new fc2 format).
