This was required. [22:12] <mr_roberts_z> The position after he comes up makes Mario grab Bowser's tail closer to the bomb, so there's less distance Bowser has to fly.
It's obviously not neccesary to fall into the lava to get into the right position for that sideflip dive, and it's possible to grab Bowser equally close to the bomb with other methods for diving into the tail as well. As for the run, poor camera angle choices. However, there were some nice improvements to make it a somewhat worthy submission.
It doesn't seem appropriate to include this word here.
And your point is?

Just finished watching. Typical SM64 improvement, looks good. I think the published run has better camera work, but this one isn't as bad as some people made it seem. It's still entertaining if you don't know about the previous runs. I'm interested to hear the authors' explanation. Was it to switch things up or was it necessary for some improvements?

First of all, good work on improving the current movie. Generally, I welcome different camera angles because it makes each movie look independent and not just copy&paste. Yet as I've seen everything up to the end of BitFS in nearly frame-advance (~5 fps), I can't come up with a clear vote. Those parts in BitFS where Mario could not be seen at all definitely were not my taste. If those camera changes were required to save frames or reduce lag, I'd vote meh; if they were not (and thus only made the run less entertaining), I'd give it a no.

These are so incredibly boring in my opinion. Very well optimized though. I'd vote yes.

An impressive series of improvements, although the camera was impressively bad. I appreciate that you were trying to create a different feel for the movie, and there were a few segments where this was nice, but even the camera-changing sounds themselves detracted from my enjoyment due to their frequency. On the technical side, the improvements are very impressive, although I certainly wish you'd been a lot more specific in describing them, especially since the altered camera angles make it harder to spot differences. Here's what I think I see: BitDW: Long jumping from the beginning then diving after the wall kick to get onto the elevator quickly, thus being able to start the BLJ on an earlier rotation of the platforms. Perhaps SwordlessLink can explain this one in a little more detail. I'm sure there's a good story that would shed light on why this obvious improvement hadn't been included in the previous run. :P BitFS: I can't tell, but it seems like you might have made those quick jumps on the "falling bridge" section at the end a little more optimal by spacing them closer together somehow. BitS: I can't see anything different, but it seems like there might have been some optimization on one or more of the wall kicks. As far as the final Bowser fight, you started the last throw spinning in a different direction and threw him on a different spike bomb. Seems like kind of an...obvious...change to make! I mean, only a nub at TASing Mario 64 would miss that one! I'd really appreciate if you went back and explained these in detail, since the optimizations are obviously the most interesting part of any new run and I like to hear what they are and how they were discovered. Anyway, I'd say that this movie should be published, but you should have known that pretty much everybody was going to bitch about the camera angles. There are a few parts where the new camera angles definitely added something to the experience (several spots in BitS, I thought), and I just wish you'd be more selective since I shouldn't be hearing clickclickclickclickwhooshwhooshclickclick unless there's some obvious benefit.

normally i'd agree, but the camera angles were really bad for a lot of the run. i wouldn't make that a reason not to say yes, but i definitely think it's worth pointing out as a warning for the next one. and just to make it clear: my vote is yes.

It's a small improvement, and the entertainment is overall worse because of the camera angles. I still think it should be published though, I was just stating my opinion..

Your submission was no different. A 51 frames improvement is significant knowing the length of this run is only 5 minutes and 32 seconds long. Which means, the shorter a movie is, the harder it is to improve it.

My run had just under 6 seconds of improvement, while this has just under 2. 51 frames is hardly worth a new submission if you're not gonna care about making the run watchable with the camera angles. I still think it should be published though, leave me alone..

Don't mind me pointing out that you expected your submission to be something like 2 seconds faster before you found your unanticipated improvements. Had you not found that extra stuff, I suppose you wouldn't have submitted, since it would've been hardly worth it?

Your run had a simalar amount of frames shaved when it came to improving previous strats, I don't see how that makes it any less worthy

I'm all for improvement on an existing run that's already an impressive accomplishment in and of itself. However jaded I may become, I will respect improvement upon what has impressed me in the past. I understand where others are coming from when they cite camera manipulation as a negative point here. I'm rather torn on it, myself; the camera takes some deliberately poor positioning in Bowser 2, though it's really only poor if you're wanting to follow Mario's movements. You could instead see, "wow, the author navigated that section cleanly and precisely without even having to see where the character is being guided to. Impressive." It's for this reason that I can't cite it as a negative point. At worst, it's a grey area. In the end, I might prefer at least being able to follow Mario's movements. If the camera work in this submission stands due to a performance boost it allows, then I'll happily take that as a valid reason and give it a thumbs up. Otherwise, keeping a more logical camera angle is more likely to keep the majority of viewers happy. Regardless of the status on that condition, I'm all for this being published as an improvement. I'd just give a stronger vote of appreciation if any purely stylistic choices were made viewer friendly.

The camera angles didn't bother me too much, other than the oft mentioned set in the lava Bowser stage. The concept of the author controlling Mario while not being able to see him is appealing, but falls short in practice (maybe it's because the other side of that particular wall is fairly interesting). I did however like how the camera was handled in the approach to the castle, and in the first Bowser stage. As always, I love spazzy Mario, so that was a plus as well. Also, I tend to think obnoxious things are funny (the fact that one of the only anime series I ever enjoyed watching was Excel Saga strongly supports this claim), so I didn't mind the camera noises, especially when used in rapid succession. Speaking of camera angles, I'm still waiting for a playaround run that uses the fixed camera. Tiny Mario doing things in the distance = win.

Wow, I really didn't think I'd care about the camera but damn, that sucked. Would've voted meh.
