With not many Nintendo 64 game having published runs, I thought t would be interesting to try out this game. Chameleon twist has a total of 6 levels, which only 4 are needed to be played through in order to reach the end.

Stage by stage comments

Level 1 - Jungle Island

Outside the cave- Pretty Straight forward. I found that spinning on the poles was a lot faster than just walking. Inside the cave- Did a lot of jumping over corners to save some small time instead of just walking around them. I also manipulated the "spiders" to favorable positions in the room with the two stone guards. The in game timer's final time for this stage was 02"11"

Level 2 - Ant Land

The only two really key things in this stage were the two rooms with the spinning walls and the boss fight. The rooms with the spinning walls were strange and they would stop depending of frame numbers and input. The boss was a lot easier to manipulate into positions as to where she could easily be defeated. The in game timer's final time for this stage was 03"43"

Level 3 - Desert Castle

This stage was interesting. In several areas I had to grab the pole in a weird, curved way to avoid eating the enemies, which would loose time. Also, I took damage on the spikes on purpose to show that you could just walk between them if you took damage. This was faster than using the Chameleon's tongue to make the spikes go down but was slower than walking along the end of the spikes, which I show later. Regardless, this didn't loose any time since I had to wait for a few moving platforms anyway. Also, when I got to the sand that you couldn't walk in, but had pole to swing on, I found that if you angle them right, they let you keep a good amount of speed in a certain direction for a bit. This helped a lot on the second one of these because there were no good places I could really swing from. The in game timer's final time for this stage was 04"35"

Level 4 - Ghost Castle

Most of the rooms in this level weren't as complex as the ones in Ant Land. The 2 rooms where I had to light these candles using enemies involved just waiting for the right time to eat the enemy. The in game timer's final time for this stage was 02"47"

Other comments

The Final in game time for this game was 00:13'16"
Some possible improvements might include
  • Improved Routes
  • Better Luck Manipulation

cool, gex and now this 64 platformers make for entertaining and creative runs hopefully this will inspire the behemoths like banjo kazooie, rocket, and dk64 to be done dk64 though probably has emulation issues anyway those possible improvements... how much of a difference would they make

I used to love this game when i was younger! Weird i know, but anyway, it seemed like a solid run, shame there's so much of just running from one doorway to another Also are you sure that level route is optimal? Just it is the exact opposite of the SDA chameleon twist run. Also: Good job :P 7/8.8

...and dk64 doesn't emulate properly. (J) gets further than other versions but I think it has other problems.

I thought you did a really good job on this. Your precision showed that you understood TASing concepts well; I saw abuse of being invincible after getting damaged, nice shortcuts, entertaining boss fights (only thing that looks like it could be faster was the queen termite fight.... it might be possible to start swinging sooner to trip her on the first possible frame, not launch the tongue to grab as soon as she stands up). I think the game is not the best, but you TASed it very well. Fast boss fights, some interesting platforming, good tongue action. I give 7.4/8.2.

He was right, the other two stages proved to be a lot faster(which surprised me). I may have saved around at least 2 and 1/2 minutes, but I still need to check Anyway, once I finish getting help with hex editing and checking several parts that may desynch due to luck manipulation, I'll either update the m64 here or take this down and resubmit.

Interesting game, the tongue action seems to be very useful at times. My main concern is that the TAS doesn't seem to differ much from normal game play. Something I could tell from watching the demo of the game. I'll give it 6.1 for entertainment and 7.3 for tech mainly because I felt the running was unoptimized. You don't seem to cater for the fact that the camera rotates meaning you're running angle can suddenly become way off.

I've mirrored the encode here. Haven't watched it yet but will, Chameleon Twist is a nice game.

due to a lot of changes I have made, this run will be cancelled. The new run should be up sometime soon
