This emulator is obsolete. Use BizHawk Yabause is a open source Sega Saturn emulator. The rerecording branch src can be found here http://github.com/adelikat/yabause-rr/ Yabause-rr is accepted and approved for TASvideos submissions, for now

Posting to add my support to this, and once this is useable I will consider working on a game I definitely want to see a TAS of - Story of Thor 2 (otherwise known as Beyond Oasis in US land).

This is great to read. When this emulator start to use, perhaps someone would do a Clockwork Kngihts 1 and 2 run. Both games are fun, yet hard. Seeing someone beat them in a TAS is something I will enjoy watching.

I thought NiGHTS would be a good idea until I saw how the best scores were accomplished. Suddenly, it doesn't seem like such a good idea anymore. Really fun game to play, not a fun game to watch someone play when they're going for high score / fastest time. I'd almost rather see the Panzer Dragoons.

It actually has been done unassisted, by T3-CYR-WIZ. The score is 27.55 million. There is a pretty good video of his at Super-Play! (it does contain some mistakes, though, and the score is lower). There are two major problems with Silvergun: 1) it's SLOW; 2) playing it for score takes inhuman amounts of time.

Did you watch any videos going for time instead of score? Going for time and going for score are completely different. (Also (obviously) I think a NiGHTS TAS would be great. Though I guess I'm not really helping the off-topicness with this post...)

A quick couple questions: Who is 'we'? The original developers? (curiosity, mainly) Also, as the emulator is still in progress, will it be possible to merge changes in the main branch with the rr branch? The compatibility list suggests that the emulation is still lacking in some fundamental issues, like opacity layers. Also, are you overwhelmed yet? How many emulators can one man take on?

The rerecording devs = paul_t, me, zeromus The main devs I don't think really care about rerecording but we have worked with them on porting stuff over. I'm not sure if the official TAS version will be yabause-rr or the main yabause.
Also, are you overwhelmed yet? How many emulators can one man take on?

I can't say I share the enthusiasm for this project. As much as I'd love to see good quality saturn videos, emulation is just not stable enough for this task. Even the most compatible Saturn emulator (SSF) breaks games left and right between new releases (for example: X-Men COTE), and Yabause is a far cry from the high compatibility that SSF has. Even minor changes can result in something as insignificant as slightly more slowdown or loading times in a game, which can be fatal for TAS videos (Radiant Silvergun, for example, has quite a lot of slowdown at some levels, which isn't always there in SSF depending on the revision).

Many others did flawless runs of RSG as well, including one video by VTX-IFO using only the sword weapon. (this is the same guy who can play Ikaruga flawlessly with one controller in each hand, controlling both players at the same time). The problem is that RSG is an annoying grindfest if you go for high scores. Getting high chains is one thing, but you also have to kill bosses as slow as possible, so you can milk out the most weapon bonus and scratch bonus (the one where you get plus score if you go near a bullet/wall, leaving sparks behind). The only thing I can imagine are set rules for a RSG TAS video, such as using one weapon exclusively, or trying to finish as fast as possible (maybe even trying to finish as fast as possible with maxed out weapons, that could be interesting). But I'd much rather see a flawless run of Scorcher, since I firmly believe that the last level is impossible to complete by a human player. It would be nice to see the *ending* of that game.

Well, surely you exaggerate. Apart from ben shinobi, WIZ, and VTF-INO (you misspelled him twice, lol), no-one has released high scoring RSG runs to the public, let alone flawless ones (which is to say, none of them are; WIZ's recent world record is pretty damn close, though).

Yes, that's exactly what I meant. There is very little room for playing around with Silvergun because the ship moves at a snail's pace, swordplay-only videos have been out for years, and there's pretty much nothing left to do to impress compared to already available stuff. Score-wise, I'd rather go with GigaWing, which is sadly on another platform.

Right, VTF-INO then. Yes, it's true that not many people have released high scoring RSG videos, but there are still way more than for, say, Cotton 2. Which could be another nice candidate for a TAS video. The game system is fairly quirky, with the seal/combo system.

Hm, okay, couple of snags. Rayman won't load up on Daemon - it refuses to get past the BIOS startup-, and when I load up the image it goes into Audio Player mode. I can't figure out how to get it into the game. Sometimes OSD information appears upsidedown, but it's not doing it right now. It will sometimes crash when fiddling with the CD settings while while recording a movie. I probably shouldn't touch it. Still, the fact that I'm able to get it running is a good thing, and has me hopeful right now.

A little more investigation: Nights into Dreams runs (mostly) fine. Rayman, on the other hand, goes straight to the audio player. That attempt to TAS this game was nicely foiled. >_< However, Nights has unplayably terrible graphics when using OpenGL interface, and when using the Software interface a chunks of the screen get offset, with things like a chunk of the bottom ending up at the top. And the OSD information is upside down. And things run very slowly with lots of frame skip. While the problems are understandable -the Saturn was a needlessly complicated heap of hardware-, they are regrettable. I don't think I'll be getting into this any time soon. Edit: I forgot to mention that trying to fiddle with video settings while Nights was running crashed the emulator pretty consistently.

I'm having real problems try to get a game to run. I've tried running it from a CD, but when I configure the setting by change the disk type to CD it causes the emu to crash and I'm forced to delete the .ini as it crashes every time I try to open it. I've tried downloading the game but when I load the .bin file it just causes the emu to crash and I'm again forced to delete the .ini.
