I was inspired to do this run when I watch the Angry Video Game Nerd's Transformer review. As he describes in the video, this game notoriously difficult to play. Poor hit detection, 1 hit and you are dead, awkward controls, and very little in the way of power-ups make this game frustrating for the average player.

Summary

  • Emulator used FCEUX 2.1.0a
  • Aims for fastest time
  • Uses Warps

Notes

  • One hit and you are dead, period. And many enemies are designed/placed to make sure that happens, a lot. There are a number of awkward looking moments in the run as a result. Each situation is the fastest method (that I was able to come up with).
  • I use warps in level 2 & 7 to skip levels 3 & 8
  • Level 9 one is a lot like SMB 4-4 where you have to pick the right path...Except in the most assist example in gaming history! Here is a map of the route that should be taken: http://www.gamefaqs.com/console/nes/file/578338/47897 And of course this route is the hardest way to get through the level.
I guess that is it. Enjoy.

Heh, the first thing that popped into my head when watching AVGN's review of this game was that it would probably make a decent TAS. Had I not been busy I would probably have started it already, but you beat me to the punch :)

Somewhat offtopic: When the AVGN introduces the Famicom in his Transformers review, what game's music is playing in the background? I seem to know it somehow, but can't come up with a name :( /Thanks! :)

Here is an encode on Youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g7U2Plp8DCI I'd say that was an OK watch.

Oh man, the first-generation-ness of this game reminds me of the 52-in-1 cartridge we had growing up so hard... Good quick watch of a game I understand to be insanely difficult. Agreed that a few situations seemed quite awkward, but whatcha gonna do?
A hundred years from now, they will gaze upon my work and marvel at my skills but never know my name. And that will be good enough for me.

Thanks for the encode. This TAS was actually a lot more entertaining than I expected. Here's another yes vote.

Thanks for the encode, FractalFusion. Wow, what a terrible game. I take it the truck's only redeeming ability is that it's shorter? Not even faster than walking? Still, the movie was reasonably entertaining.

Cheetahmen 2 meets Gradius meets Super Metroid, combined with a really bad game. I'll give it a meh, leaning towards yes. Worth watching to see a ridiculous game after seeing the AVGN, yes. Worth watching as a display of technical skill, very meh. It is short enough though.

Wow, Prime sure is fast for a giant robot. i've seen worse games. Of course, it doesn't mean this game is good. At least is fast. Weak yes volte
My first language is not English, so please excuse myself if I write something wrong. I'll do my best do write as cleary as I can, so cope with me here =) (ノಥ益ಥ)ノ

I find the stage intro chime really catchy. The ingame stage music drives me insane. The TAS, through awkward movements and delays does a good job at showing how difficult the game is and it's a short run. Plus is AVGN material so thats extra bonus points. I'll give it a strong meh vote.

Not Prime, rather a different transformer. Edit: Wow, the run actually makes the game look decent. Yes vote. The transformer you play as in the game is named Ultra Magnus if anyone is curious.

I've finally watched it. I'll give it a yes, despite that the programmers were lazy and only programmed 3 pieces of music in the entire game. And I thought Squaresoft was lazy with FF1's battle theme...

Wow, that game is sh*t-tastic. Good run of it, though, as usual. You rarely disappoint. It's sometimes the games that are the letdown, unfortunately.

No, it can shoot upward and launch little bombs at the ground.

Having watched the nerd's review of this game probably made me enjoy this run more than I'd otherwise do, but there's nothing wrong with that. TASing AVGN games can also be a way of attracting more people to visit this site, which alone makes this run very publishable. Yes.

It's good, but I believe it does not cheat with death enough. Enemies are sometimes avoided by a range wider than necessary. Could it be reduced to the minimum ?

Intro, Level, Boss, Ending...3.5. The backgrounds were kind of nice for NES. Also, "Level 10" properly (not A). On level 10, why did you switch sides rather than jump around same side of platform? (going from A-B-C rather than jumping around the edge near C)

I guess no one will try to beat your time in this game... Yes for you and for a game that will never be obsoleted!

So you already know that SXL's and eternaljwh's suggestions won't work, Dooty?
