I wonder if it's really politically correct to prefer US-versions of Super Mario and Zelda where hardly anybody watching these runs will even read a single line of text. Is it about nostalgia?

I think it's about consistency. And Bionic Commando.

I'm sure it's just the audience. There are a lot of people who cringe at Japanese the same they would unfamiliar math... I'm not actually going to watch the Nico-Video run. I haven't watched any of the Zelda 64 runs so I've decided to forbear watching anything until the fully optimized run finally gets made I can be really blown away by it.

Per the Rules, we prefer the use of the English version unless other versions have glitches or game features that aren't present in the English version. Faster text is not a good reason to switch versions.
Screw the rules I have money! But in all seriousness. I think the switch to another version is warrented in this case. The game that is left is 90% cutscene, which makes it really boring. So to keep the entertainment value alive we have to ue the japanee version. Simple. And I think nobody will argue, that the upcoming TAS is only faster because of version differences. ;) The rules say:
If there already is a published video, do not use a different ROM than what it uses, unless the new ROM is obviously better, and you can show how it should be compared to the existing movie.
Both is true for OoT any%. The jap rom is obviously better and we can show how it should be compared.

So watching all the cutscenes in a language most people don't understand makes it more entertaining then?

I think the reason the US version is preferred is because the rom is much easier to find than a jap rom so people who prefer to watch it with .m64 don't need to search all over the internet for the right rom. Also, this reminded me of an idea I had for the tas. After getting magic, instead of playing prelude or savewarping, play serenade. Megaflip into the water in front of the water temple and HESS out of LH, then single bomb hover over the fence (maybe hookshotting the ladder is faster?) and SS to GV. It costs 2 more bombs but I think its faster than getting out of the market and SSing to GV from there.

I'm curious why someone hasn't done this already... Just skip all of the temples, get the light arrow through use of either the Light Arrow in B trick or something of the sort then skip straight to Ganon after Door-skipping into adult. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SL6VsGktX7M Timeframe Start Skip Kokiri(Just hop past the guard and run to Hyrule) Skip Door of Time Grab Arrow Explosive Hop into Ganon's Castle Skip his Barrier in some manner Whack Gannon Jerk at a ~15 minute OOT Zelda video? Is there a particular thing stopping the entire game from being skipped, honestly? Or am I misunderstanding the ability of being able to Arrow on B button actually being useful?

Care to elaborate as to how it's better?

Not exactly the RNG will be different.

In all honesty, as I said, I'm not entirely sure how such could be done. I've seen videos before of people skipping straight into his castle, but I did realize you have to have the Light Arrow in order to actually BEAT Ganondorf. I realize that is pretty much what the previous run did... but, I wonder, what actually -triggers- the event where Zelda gives Link the light arrows? Is it having all six medallions in possession and entering that triggers it, or is it having the final medallion that triggers it? If that's possible, couldn't someone memory-manipulate the final medallion, then get the arrows? As for the bombs, if I read the FAQ on OOT page right for tricks, if you skip into Adult through the door without the bomb bag, it assumes you had the bag and gives you 30 bombs, yes?

you need spirit and shadow medaillon to activate the light arrow cutscene. and yes, it is possible to get those via memory manipulating glitch when you get adult, there appears the bomb sign on c-down, although you have no bombs, that is true. but you have 0 bombs and you can't get any bomb drops, so no way to use them apart from some memory manipulating glitch to make bomb drops appear this is all done in speed runs of this game nowaways, but it still takes nearly an hour to beat the game because of all the long cutscenes ;)

I may be missing something, but the new run seemed that he got -all- the medallions... or is the bridge forming not actually six medallions but a flag that is marked after getting the light arrows? He seemed to be doing the bug catching for quite a long time.

I bring it up simply because I've never received a good reason to consider the J ROM to be better, other than faster text boxes. If I hear of a good reason, I would have no problem with allowing the next version to use the J ROM as well.

I thought you only needed the spirit and shadow medallions to trigger the cutscene...

By that logic, if you have the Spirit and Shadow, couldn't you form the bridge without bothering with Zelda scene/light arrows? I don't remember being able to make the bridge without first having the scene in the Temple. Then again, I may simply not be realizing something, and it's said that the runs already incorporate it - perhaps it isn't any medallions but having the light arrows that forms the bridge, despite what the game claims. I'd have to glance at it a bit more, but it seems that all the manipulation he did was for more than two medallions, unless I'm underestimating just how much manipulation was required for those two medallions.

With "cutscene", I meant the Zelda/light arrow cutscene, not the bridge cutscene.

he only got spirit and shadow, believe me ;) he also manipulated other stuff, that's true, but the stuff we manipulated was: bomb bag, quiver, gauntlets and songs to make the bridge appear you have to have watched the zelda light arrow cutscene. maybe having light arrows is already enough to trigger the cutscene, but someone once told me, that it doesn't work

Oh, I see. That's why I wish there was a list of just what he was doing and in what manner, it's confusing for those that don't know...

No, you have to have seen the light arrow cutscene. Having light arrows in your inventory does not activate it.

@AndreCorbin: Yes, more medals than just Spirit and Shadow are glitched. But the other ones are just useless byproducts of glitching these two into your inventory. Also, there is no way of getting all medallions using RBA anyway, as RBAing any medallion will irreversibly delete the light medallion from your inventory. (And you can't use RBA prior to getting it)

Are you sure you didn't mistake collecting all the medallions on the "All Temples" run AndreCorbin?
