I get it that we're all depressed, and no one now wants to put even more work into the site, such as making a nice tarball. I'm not asking you to do it. Despite my signature, I've cared about this site since its inception, and knew many people here before the site started, and will continue to be friends with after we close. I'll be doing it because I care about all the effort that was put into this site after all these years, even if it was pointless. I'm going to do my utmost to make sure we have an amicable close, even if the rest of you are too dejected to. I believe I can have the tarball ready by the end of the week without anyone's help. Don't worry yourself about it. adelikat: Post whatever you need to on the front page, I'll edit it later when the tarball is ready. Also, we should probably create a text file of the URLs to every video on archive.org and YouTube or wherever and offer that for download too.

adelikat: You writing up an announcement? We can't keep putting this off forever, especially if we're shutting the server at the end of April.

Can someone explain all this in english for people like me who don't really know the complications of TASing? I'm hoping this is an elaborate April fools, but it sucks if this is the end of the site, I come here for the speed and precision, not necessarily the absolute authenticity in the emulation.

Guys, thank you for making this public. However, in reading the arguments from this thread, there is one big point that nobody has brought up, something this site contributes that video hosting services does not. Although I also do not know all the complications of TASing (and I didn't read through all of Dwedit's thread), I have enough of an idea of what goes on here that I feel I can point something out. What this site contributes is a sense of community and a place of discussion / experimentation. Many people do not create runs in isolation; they solicit advice, they post WIPs, and they share their findings with others. By doing this, we all learn more about the games we play, where some of this knowledge goes to benefit speedruns of the actual console games. Sites like archive.org and YouTube do not provide the same support for developing good movies. Yes, there is the problem where we can no longer claim to emulate games perfectly honestly. But in my opinion, this does not invalidate TASing as a skill and an art in itself. The fact that TASing presents its own unique challenges compared to console speedrunning makes it interesting in its own way. Enough people over the years have still been interested in this skill and art. I've suspended my disbelief of whether a run is possible (especially in cases like Pokemon Yellow or Chrono Trigger, for instance) and let myself be awed and amazed. TASes do to games what special effects do to movies; they enhance the gameplay experience even if they don't feel completely lifelike. In summary, I feel like the site is still valuable enough, and still contributes enough to a legitimate cause, that it will get by with some important modifications to its Why And How section.
Used to be a frequent submissions commenter. My new computer has had some issues running emulators, so I've been here more sporadically. Still haven't gotten around to actually TASing yet... I was going to improve Kid Dracula for GB. It seems I was beaten to it, though, with a recent awesome run by Hetfield90 and StarvinStruthers. (http://tasvideos.org/2928M.html.) Thanks to goofydylan8 for running Gargoyle's Quest 2 because I mentioned the game! (http://tasvideos.org/2001M.html) Thanks to feos and MESHUGGAH for taking up runs of Duck Tales 2 because of my old signature! Thanks also to Samsara for finishing a Treasure Master run. From the submission comments:
Shoutouts and thanks to mklip2001 for arguably being the nicest and most supportive person on the forums.

Absolutely! Let's consider a hypothetical game, called "Raiscan's fantabulous awesome ball". It displays a ball to the player. That's about it. In our emulators we get this. It's a nice black ball right? Quite clearly. However, on our real console when we turn on from a cold start we get this: Even more bizarrely, when we do it again we get this: What's going on? The emulator is executing the game's code 100% correctly. Where are the colours coming from? What's happening is the game is initializing a ball and getting the colour information from a source or part of the hardware that is constantly random. An entropy, if you will. It's possible it's reading such information entirely from uninitialized RAM which may have left over residue information from a previously played game. This is how Banjo Kazooie's Stop 'N' Swop was going to work. How far does this stretch? Almost every game, and it causes the entirety of our work to be invalid under our single premise of theoretically working on real hardware.

I say, make a poll and see if people care about the impossibilities and the "cheating" or if they just enjoy what we have been doing. My opinion is clear, there is no need to shut the site down. We are going to need to redefine the rules, that much is clear. But shutting down the site violates the spirit of finding a way to do something even when it seems impossible. So what if things are idealistic? Physics problems are nearly always assuming that there is no friction and so on. Yes, the timing is not ideal in real life. So what? I say, keep using ideal components instead of trying to emulate reality. Emulate the intent and design of the systems, not the implementation. If things are not defined clearly, we can define things ourselves. Set anything uninitialized to zero, it is an ideal memory that is completely fresh. It doesn't decay over time, it does not need to be refreshed and so on. It is an ideal model of memory.

I made a donation in 2009, I suppose that I can give an another 12$(CAD) as long as you don't give this as another Color the Dinosaur TAS award.

If some people here really feel strongly about continuing this site, or launching a similar one, with necessary changes, send me a private message. If enough people feel we either provide a good resource, or don't care and want these types of movies anyway, and you wouldn't mind paying $5 a year or something, please send me a private message. I'm not making any promises, but if enough people want a site, with a new goal, where we provide something similar to what we have till now, let me know.

Always having a black ball a good thing. Lets say you are a sprinter. Giving every other sprinter the same shoes, clothing, and holding the race indoors away from wind is the same as having a video game that always gives you a black ball. Sounds fair to me. Edit:I'll donate $50 if this is not an April fools joke. Otherwise, asking for money under false pretenses is real a reason to the players and viewers abandon this site.

And what about RPG games that get their initial RNG from an entropy pool? the entire outcome of the game is decided by the RNG, e.g. King's Bounty (which I might add *does* start it's RNG in entropy, so the TAS on-site is impossible to run on a console).

I want to go on-record as heartily disagreeing with the proposed idea to shut the site down. Just because it's theoretically impossible to actually TAS on a console doesn't mean the site isn't serving a good purpose; it provides entertainment matter to the visitors, and isn't that the goal anyways? I remember seeing somewhere on the site that "TASes aren't supposed to compete with speedruns," and the news that TASing is likely impossible on consoles does nothing to change that. I know my opinion doesn't count for all that much, but I think the site should stay open, with current time-based TASes staying up, but shifting to a focus on entertainment-based TASes. I think I saw this thought brought up before in this thread.

So, a TAS is like the first time a game is played on a brand new console?

No. There is always entropy. My balls would never be black on a new console (though it's entirely possible for them to be black). They will always be a random colour, regardless of the age of the game/console.

This site means far more to me than anyone here might think. It helped me stay positive through family deaths, gave me goals to strive for outside of things like education, and introduced me to a community of loving, caring people. Basically, this is more than a hobby that's going to die with this site. I will support any decision that lets the art of tool-assisted speedrunning continue.

Look back at how far back the thread has gone; it's not an April Fool's joke, it's a case of pedantry making the perfect the enemy of the excellent. FWIW I am willing to donate $20 per month, possibly more (especially if my income rises), toward keeping this site or a successor site running.

If adelikat is willing to transfer the domain, tasvideos.org works well (because they are still tool-assisted) another good one is emuvideos.org or if WebNations is cool with it, a subdomain of speedruns.net

guys, seriously? i mean, come on?? i know next to nothing about the technical aspects of TASing, however i don't understand how 6-7+ years of work can be invalidated by a realization? Somebody brought up a point that if TASing is like "godlike" playing, couldn't this godlike player know exactly when to turn on the cartridge? could somebody maybe explain how this realization invalidates all of the movies that have been made? the movies look real enough, everbody, just don't do whatever it is that you could do to cheat out the game. keep the rules the same as they have been and i really really really see no reason why this still isn't a valid sport. please don't take the site down... and if you do, can people still upload TASes all the time to the mirror/clone site? seems like there are still a lot of people who's appreciation of this art has not been affected by blades of steel. I love blades of steel, but i'd never forgive it if it took away this site. i hope this is a damn joke because this is silly as hell.

forgot who that quote was from, but COME ON, listen to the logic in it. people cannot be serious here about shutting down the site. nfw!! bisqwit's crying avatar only serves to convince me more that this is a joke, because there's no way you people could be serious here.

I haven't posted a whole lot lately, but I still frequent the site on a regular basis and I'm incredibly sad to see it go. I saw the site go from a grid of screenshots in 2004 to the great site we see today. I don't entirely agree with the reasons for its shutting down, but I understand them from an administrator's perspective. Good luck to you all, it's been a pleasure.

I am now aware of that which has taken place here. I am rather upset at the loss. Actually, potential loss -- It isn't lost yet, but is certainly headed that direction. I wish to argue for keeping this site running. It may well be possible that everything I say here will not impact the ultimate result (closure of site), but I'm certain that all I say here will be noticed. Your argument (the collective of the admins and judges I observe speaking here before this was opened to public), as far as the concept I have received from reading this thread, is that the site must represent perfection, and the emulation can't achieve this perfection. With conflicting goal and possibility, the site should dissolve. I will soon attempt to attack this reasoning through my own belief of emulation. Through this, I will attempt to inject a different thought, one that no one else has considered. I will also pose a question about emulation of the Next-Gen consoles, which may well reveal that the issue does not show up in that field, or it may end up further confirming what is feared. Finally, I will move on to the community itself. They are as good a reason as anything to bring up, and they do have a large impact even outside of Tool-Assisted Superplays. Now that I said what I will say, I shall go on to say it. The core randomness of the actual consoles. The timing wanders. Reading from uninitialized memory. All sorts of systems for randomness within the hardware itself. Successfully emulating this randomness will prevent movie files from working (without a measure to reproduce the same randomness from the movie file), yet it is this randomness that we don't emulate with complete precision. Hence, everything we do is inherently flawed. But the argument that I see is that the emulator can't match the console without going into the utterly bizarre. Perfectly emulate the sound, video, each and every opcode, defined or not, everything else, but the hardware itself still is random. What I ask is not that we must match the emulator to the console. This is asking for far too much. However, I will ask, is it possible, with all this randomness, that the console itself can match the emulator, however slim? The impression I got from each and every TAS is that, given perfect conditions, how fast we can complete each game. Given perfect conditions! All the randomness lined up to make our input file work, the timing is spot on, and the memory at power-on had initial values that were exactly that. What's so impossible here that the emulator is doing that the console can't do? I will predict one question that comes up that will poke a hole in my argument: Couldn't someone adjust the emulator to a certain, highly favorable randomness that does utterly break some games and lets them complete it far faster than what should be possible? Oh, no, it's not outside the realm of possibility for the console itself. I was just lucky, how can you prove otherwise? My response to that? I have no valid argument. I must concede at this point. But is this point enough to break the rest of my argument? The best I can say is that the emulator should attempt to produce the average case, whatever the average can be defined as. I hear all about the timing crystals and all that for older consoles. What about newer ones? XBox360, Wii, PS3, DSi? Are they subject to the exact same rules of hardware randomness that the older consoles have? Maybe. I don't know the details. If they are more "protected" from hardware randomness, then perhaps these consoles can still be emulated "perfectly." If so, TASVideos can still have a future through those consoles, given enough time for the emulators to finally develop. If not, your original point stands. I have put forth my thoughts on emulation, and a thought that it's not the fact we must match the console, but can the console match the emulation? I have also put forth a question about later consoles. But I don't feel the emulation itself is the whole issue. There is also a community here, and there has definitely been an impact on things that aren't a TAS. I note on the front page: "I've spent the past few days figuring out how to word this, and I still don't know" -- Are words a problem now? A great many people have come. One way or another, someone has successfully brought many people together into one site. Is it right to tell them to leave all because you declare that one concept is flawed? Granted, it's the founding concept of the site, but it is not the sole concept that everyone unanimously shares when coming here. I can say this believing my own concept and reasons may well be different from the site's. There has also been some impact in other areas. Actual speedrunners who actually do runs on the console can use some of the techniques discovered through TASing. Losing this resource (I am under the impression that TASVideos is a significant resource here) will certainly affect them. Obviously, what we're doing here has enough similarity to the actual console, correct? TASing can involve disassembling the game. We develop emulator tools for that. TASing might need assistance from scripts. Lua is added to it. Related communities benefit from our work on these improvements on our road to TASing. Even if the emulation itself is never perfect for TASing, we are a benefit to others that work on their own things. We are worrying far too much over perfection to. If there's a new concept that you want to have for the site, don't make English words a problem. Make it implicit until someone can come up with an especially well-fitting phrase that works for it. If it's all down to a single sentence that determines whether the whole site lives, then that isn't a useful foundation for the site. I suggest that you leave language out of whether the site lives. I have given my thoughts on community. And my thoughts on words with the concept, which I think is silly. Maybe I'm completely wrong about the community. Please correct me if I am. I may have been overzealous in defending the site, to keep it running indefinitely, in spite of my habits not showing the sort of activity that would call for this sort of argument from me. All my writing here can attest to that. I can always turn around and never look back to this site, and my own life will not be impacted much. But fact is, I want to keep the site going. I wouldn't know how to revive the site should it go down. If the decision here is final, fine. I am saddened, but I will simply move on. Scarcely any further mention from me of TASing, and almost certainly no drive to make any further attempts. That is what I believe I will do.

I give the wildly overblown reaction a 8.7 for entertainment, and a 4.5 technical score for the three month gap between Dwedit's thread and this one. See you next April!

1. I truely hate April Fools pranks and I am confident that this is one of them 2. Due to the dictatorship structure of this site and pedantic, narcissistic traits of a loud minority, this sort action (shutting down the site and tainting the perception of TAS) is almost believable 3. Influencing the RNG of older consoles (recall that the issue discussed here only affects some, older consoles) would be EASIER (and require fewer frames spent manipulating) because the result could be influenced by an external source to the console. We always understood that influencing luck was something that could not be done without control of time... that's why it is God-like to manipulate luck :) 4. I'm looking forward to TASing Micro Machines 64 Turbo tonight :)
