Happy Hallowe'en!
This is a superplay of Olympic Gold - Barcelona '92 for the Genesis. Note that a perfect ROM dump does not apparently exist.
TAS goals:
  • Superplay/Does not aim for fastest time
  • Aims for all World Records
  • Manipulates Luck
  • Plays on Hardest Difficulty
  • Emulator used: Gens 11a
Events
There are 7 events in the full Olympic mode, and I achieve the best score or time I can in each, playing at the Olympic (hardest) difficulty:
100 metres dash:
Speed here is achieved by alternating pressing A and B each frame, allowing for a time of 9.11 seconds
Hammer throw:
Once again A and B alternating determines how far you throw, but you also need to press C at fixed points to determine how far you throw. A random power gauge operates in the background, and at full power a distance of 93.05 m is achieved. The remaining heats are used to insert a subtle 'over 9000' joke.
Archery
Pull back the bow, aim and fire. The bow randomly wobbles all over the place, so hitting the centre is quite difficult normally, however it is somewhat trivial in a TAS. The perfect score of 180 points is achieved.
110 metres hurdles
Same controls as the 100 metres here, but you get a jump button in C to leap over the hurdles. Time achieved here is 12.11 seconds
Pole Vault
The highest you can set the bar to is 6.35m, so I achieve the best possible height that the game will allow. Just like the real Olympics, you need to fail 3 times before the event ends, so the last 3 failed attempts are necessary.
Diving
Here, you set a diving goal determined by the options, then try and match that dive as perfectly as possible. The goal that gives the largest number of points is chosen each time, and I achieve a perfect score each time from the judges. 5 dives are performed, two forward-facing dives and two backward-facing dives, going alternately clockwise and anti-clockwise each time. The final dive is freestyle which can be done any of the four possible ways. The maximum score of 504 points is achieved
200 metres freestyle swimming
This event was the most challenging to TAS, and indeed more than half the number of rerecords were used on this one event.
Once again, speed is determined by alternately pressing A and B. However, you also have Stamina, which can be burned through in around 7 seconds if you maintain the maximum speed. Stamina also adds to the speed you travel at - therefore the fastest approach is to go as fast as possible WITHOUT burning into the stamina bar. Stamina does recharge slowly over time if you are going slow enough, but you will be going too slow then. Keeping within the narrow speed requirement that doesn't burn stamina but does move as fast as possible was tough to plan, and required very precise input at each frame. You may often see places where there are gaps in input - this is deliberate so the swimmer does not go fast enough to burn Stamina.
At the end of the race, I do burn through stamina to gain a final burst of speed. However, since the stamina does add to the speed you travel, not all of the Stamina is used since it would not achieve a faster time. In the end, I achieved a time of 1 minute 43.3 seconds

mmbossman: Thanks for playing, but it doesn't look like this one is a fan favorite. Rejecting.

adelikat: Unrejecting this submission for consideration into the Vault tier

adelikat: Accepting for publication to the Vault

Look! It's 16-bit Track & Field! Even in the absence of a joking 2nd player, I found this oddly compelling to watch, and the events here which aren't present there make up for any "it's too similar" deficiencies. I do think this should be published (if partly so that Toothache's publish-quality encode doesn't go to waste).

What kind of TAS can't even beat Michael Phelps in swimming?

Well, that is the limitation of the game for one, and for two this was made for the Barcelona Olympics, so I'm guessing such a record would be inconcievable at the time, and for three Michael Phelps is not the current World Record holder for 200m freestyle - that currently belongs to Paul Biedermann of Germany!

I would vote Yes, but the site was taking so long to load the buttons that I just voted No.

Excuse me, but that isn't a great reason to vote against this submission. You could petition an admin to get that vote changed back, ya know. If that is what you want?

Ehh, didn't find it all that entertaining as a straight superplay, and as an April Fools submission it didn't meet the standards of silliness I'd hope for. Voting meh.

No offense but that was pretty boring. A lot like track & field, which is also boring. Better graphics at least. And the usual farty genesis sound FX.
It's hard to look this good. My TAS projects

Sorry, I thought it was another of those April Fools submissions trying to fool me. The site was indeed slow, but all the buttons loaded at the same time, so I voted No on purpose.

Did you even watch it? Seems rather unfair if you ask me. :-(

Yes, I did. And I even played it to see how difficult it is to TAS. I'm deeply sorry to say that, but unfair or not I will not change.

I found it very entertaining how you wasted all of the other competitors in each event, especially the racing ones. However, I noticed that the times on some of the events varied between rounds (e.g., you got 1:43.4 on the second round of the swimming race). Why is that?

Voting no because there's no way that a white man can dash that fast without being on steroids. To be fair, I'm voting no because the run was boring :(

From irc:
<AngerFist> finally, time to watch your run. <Toothache> enjoy! <AngerFist> ahahaha, funny looking athletes. <AngerFist> is it not possible to throw more than 93 metres? <Toothache> not that I've found, but apparently there are slight differences between the different country's atheletes <Toothache> I think the GBR one has better running <AngerFist> sick looking arrow shooting. <Toothache> thats my favourite event in real time <AngerFist> getting all 10.0's in diving :D <Toothache> yeah the diving was the most fun to TAS <Toothache> mostly cos the forward looking dives are so ridiculous <AngerFist> haha, this game is spot on tootache, very entertaining and all.
Consider this to be my yes vote. Really nice work my man :) Edit:

I'm not sure myself why I lost a tenth of a second on the second Swimming event. I tried redoing it a couple of times to no avail. I'm guessing because of the strange perspective of the swimming pool (which makes the front swimmers appear closer, but stretches the pool) might have a factor in it. I'm sure there are better ways to TAS the swimming but I can only do so much without making a bot or script capable of selecting the best times to input A and B. It is interesting to note that pressing A appears to give more of a boost than pressing B, so maybe the number of A and B presses is a factor too. Keeping the Stamina up was the real issue, so as long as I didnt go over that I was still making a good time, but it is a discrepancy I'm not happy with either, but have so far not found a solution to fix.

One more question: Is there a visible stamina indicator, or did you have to watch it in RAM? I couldn't tell from the movie.

I did have to watch it in RAM yes - 00FFF8CE is the address for Swimmer stamina. It appears in the Training but not in any of the Olympic modes, which is how I knew about it in the first place.

I voted meh, because this TAS didn't feature Barcelona by Freddie Mercury and Monststeraart Cablabblle... Montserrat Caballé! Well, the real reason I voted meh, is because it was pretty boring, but the game has some potential for a play-around. If you just barely qualify for the finals and then become the Danish Dominator, it would probably be a lot more awesome. Also, if there are some glitches, use them. So I'm daring you to complete a play-around TAS! Now come to think of it, I probably should've vote no for this run. Oh well, let's hope there'll be a new run.

I think I agree with Brushy on this one. The records are pretty cool, but a playaround might be more entertaining. One area where you actually had time to play around in this run would be the three failed pole vaults... I don't know what's possible in the game, but it might be really funny after setting the world record to fly into the pole on the shortest height the game allows. Instead, you just fail to take off on the same height three times. While the graphics are a lot better than NES Track & Field, this also makes the game less funny. In fact, I got more bored with this game seeing the score screen and the gold medals. It's true that no event lasts as long as the archery in Track & Field, but a lot of the events are pretty Meh. Nice April Fool's Day submission, and Happy Hallowe'en to you too, but I don't think this is a good run to publish.
Used to be a frequent submissions commenter. My new computer has had some issues running emulators, so I've been here more sporadically. Still haven't gotten around to actually TASing yet... I was going to improve Kid Dracula for GB. It seems I was beaten to it, though, with a recent awesome run by Hetfield90 and StarvinStruthers. (http://tasvideos.org/2928M.html.) Thanks to goofydylan8 for running Gargoyle's Quest 2 because I mentioned the game! (http://tasvideos.org/2001M.html) Thanks to feos and MESHUGGAH for taking up runs of Duck Tales 2 because of my old signature! Thanks also to Samsara for finishing a Treasure Master run. I honestly don't understand why this was originally rejected. I found it more interesting than many accepted movies (before the current system.)
