FractalFusion's Chessmaster in 0:07.12 (428 frames). This is my 8th version.
  • Aims for fastest time
  • Manipulates luck (not heavily)
  • Makes the AI look horrible
The key to the run was in the little-known address 0x623, also known as a timer. I had to carefully manipulate so that the delay between actions was as short as possible. Note that even after performing some action as fast as possible, I have to move the cursor to luck-manipulate.
For a while, I was stuck on a time of 489 frames. It was only after I reduced the delay to almost nothing that I managed to get the dumb AI to make its last move soon enough. One good second saved.

Nach: While this is quick, and this is possible, I don't see the interest of this extending beyond the actual move list. Publishing a key press file or an AVI of this is redundant.

As a competitive chess player this was not very interesting to me. I think more interesting would be trying to fulfill various achievements. Fastest stalemate, fastest self-mate (get yourself checkmated, if that wasn't obvious), fastest checkmate with a pawn, force the opposing king to YOUR king's original square and mate, etc. Just my two cents. Considering most of you are not competitive chess players, I doubt you'll share my sentiments.

Those are all interesting suggestion. All of them would be a more impressive feat than a 3 move checkmate.
It's hard to look this good. My TAS projects

I was competing nationally against the best chess players in my age group 8-9 years ago, although my abilites now are far from what they were. I think it's fair to assume given the nature of the site that most people are above average chess players. I could appreciate the run because not even the most brain dead of opponents would make such laughably bad opening moves.

Fastest stalemate
Nice ideas. I'm not an experienced chess player, so fastest stalemate is not the most interesting to me.
fastest self-mate
I'd be interested seeing this one. Could be funny.
fastest checkmate with a pawn, force the opposing king to YOUR king's original square and mate
These two feel arbitrary to me, although they might result in funny movies. How about some traditional categories: 0% -> Would be the same as pacifist, eating no opponent pieces. Might be too similar to the current submission, though. 100% -> All kills/items/secrets or... Reverse 100% -> Feed all pieces to the opponent. Survival -> Make the game last as long as possible. (Maybe infinitely long?)

Good God! That's the simplest way to win a game of Chess. [Currently unable to vote (post rank)] (Mod note: Please use plain text unless the situation warrants it. In particular, all red text hurts our eyes.)

...and if you read the comments, it seems that many (otherwise) decent players have blundered into checkmate this way. Which is amazing, since it seems like a decision no human player would make - "I don't like what's going on here, I'd better hurry up and get my King out there!" Note: I suck at chess, though I've read lots of books about it. I agree w/ adelikat that this goal-set is perhaps not the most entertainment one could hope to get from a chess TAS, but since noone's made anything better, yes vote from me.

This mate, and another related mate (1. e4 d5 2. exd5 Qxd5 3. Ke2 Qe4#) remind me of the sometimes quoted ancient rule that a player must move his king if he touched a piece that had no legal move. That rule is obviously not around anymore. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Touch-move_rule#History Edit: You can still touch the king, and lose that way.

Publish this one to encourage more interesting ones? I liked it a lot; FractalFusion always pulls out great random movies :D

I don't know if any of you knows this, but there is a congratulation message that I did not get to in the movie. (Just press A after it says "Black is checkmated".)

This has been discussed before. IMO playing computer chess on the easiest difficulty is kind of pointless. So you beat the computer? So what? Anyone can do it on the easiest difficulty without resorting to any superhuman abilities (which is what TASing is all about). There's no challenge. You can manipulate the disastrously poorly playing computer into making funny moves, but it's just not the same as doing it on other types of games (such as a football game) because with chess the computer is not even given any chance to actually defend itself. In a football game the computer is playing as well as it can, without handicaps, so TASing is all about fooling those algorithms. In a chess game at the lowest difficulty level you are basically taking a huge handicap and not even allowing the computer to do anything at all. You might as well just play a two-player game and make the moves for both players. It's not much different. What would be nice is to beat the computer hands down on the maximum difficulty level. Of course the problem with this is that the TAS would be really long and thus boring.

For the harder levels, the CPU thinks a lot about his next move. Fool's Mate anyone?

I think there is no such game as "computer chess" here. This is a NES game called The Chessmaster that was released in 1990. It is beaten here as fast as possible, resulting in an audiovisual experience that we can use for our amusement.

An experienced TASer made his 8th version of the run to achieve this impressive result. I bet it would be quite challenging to beat this movie time-wise. It is interesting as a tool-assisted speedrun of The Chessmaster and there is no reason to compare it to other ways of playing chess.

According to Fractal Fusion, this is easily reproduced in real-time, unlike say, monopoly or King's Bounty. Given that information, it may be exploiting a timing glitch, but, it doesn't seem like TAS material if it can be reproduced in real-time with minimal effort.

He didn't say it was a good run, he just said we shouldn't judge it by the level of chess you see. It's a video game, not chess.

You can somehow reproduce King's Bounty in real life if you play hide-and-seek with a quadriplegic. Besides, even if you can reproduce this in real life, this TAS completion is still faster than every human player is likely to play. I have to disagree.

I tested it myself now. The movements were indeed easy to reproduce after I knew what to do. The opponent cooperated on my second attempt. It was still fun, though.

Looks like the Long Algebraic Notation, but doesn't mention which piece is moved... (mmm, seems that is called Coordinate Notation :P) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chess_notation http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Algebraic_chess_notation

Yeah that string of letters really takes my breath away! You should start writing TAS poetry!
