The Legend of Zelda "Swordless" (1st Quest)

This run is my first submission to TASvideos and I believe the first of its kind.
This is one of my favorite all-time NES games. If you are unfamiliar with this game you can refer to Baxter and Morrison's 2nd quest movie submission notes for a brief recap of the plot here: #2091: Baxter & Morrison's NES The Legend of Zelda "2nd quest" in 24:59.83

This is technically not a "swordless" run for the obvious reason that you have to collect one of the three swords in order to hit Ganon and complete the game. There has been lots of discussion in the forums as to what the best way to end a run of this type would be. To my knowledge the point of this site is for people to show off game "completion" in the least amount of frames. Without collecting a sword, game completion is not possible. So instead of a freezing glitch, dying on Ganon, or stopping the movie when you enter Ganon's room, I chose to collect the sword and kill Ganon. Note that I only get the sword after acquiring all 8 peices of the triforce, and do not use it until the fight with Ganon.

A Few Quirks:

There are a few things I'd like to point out about my route, the screen scroll glitch, and enemy manipulations/drops.

Route:

First off, I was asked in the forums after I posted my WIP about why I use the gambling game more than the published 1st quest any %. In that run they only use the gambling game twice and get the rest of their rupees from enemy drops and a 100 rupee secret to everyone room on the way to level 8.
When I started attempting this run I noticed that if you get the candle on the way to level 4, when you pick up the ladder there and reset, the game for some unknown reason sets your item to the candle on restart. This of course is suboptimal since you don't need the candle until the 100 rupee secret room (if you plan on getting this) or level 8, and it forces you to access the menu to switch back to the bombs. After some testing I found that it is slightly faster to get the candle later (skipping the 100 rupees) since there's a candle room on the way to level 8. So basically you're trading 2 gamble screens for 1 menu screen and the 100 rupee secret, also allowing you to screen scroll glitch past the first candle room and the rupee secret. Furthermore, getting the candle near level 8 allows you to move up/right and down/left respectively, allowing a few frames to be saved by zig-zagging.
You may also wonder why I dont ever use the whistle to warp to level 3 to go to levels 4 and 7, and to level 1 when going to level 9. If going to level 7 before completing level 4 it is in fact faster to use the whistle, but with the screen scroll glitch it makes it optimal to do level 4 first and then over to level 7 by use of the glitch. Additionally I have to reset to get the wooden sword anyway, so I dont have to worry about walking 1 screen away from level 7 to use the whistle.
As for not using the whistle to go to level 1 after I pick up the wooden sword. In the any% they whistle from level 6 to 1, but I obviously have a different route and using the whistle after getting the wooden sword is much slower than just screen scroll glitch walking up past level 1.

Screen Scroll Glitch:

There are some places in the overworld where I do the glitch and I move in a seemingly suboptimal way. This only happens when moving north/south through the black portion at the top of the screen. For some reason if there's bushes or rocks at the top of the screen they are offset in some places by about a block worth of movement. For example, while on the way to get the 30 rupees in the beginning of the run, when screen scrolling at the first forest screen after the beach area, it looks like you may be able to hug the bushes on the right and perform the glitch there. This is not so because the bushes are offset slightly. This is the reason you see me enter the bottom of the screen in the middle, come out of the top half a block to the left, and have to go back to the right before i reenter from the top and move on. This happens a few times during the run and may look a bit strange.

Enemy Drops:

Some dungeon rooms again may seem suboptimal, and I'm sure a few frames could probably be saved here and there (although this would ultimately change the entire run from there on out which may or may not be desireable). You may see me kill some enemies first when it looked like i could have hit/killed more with the same bomb. Most of the time this is because i need to get a certain drop from a certain enemy and if I were to kill any other enemies first it would change the value of $052A thus changing the type of drop. An example of this would be in level 7 when entering the locked door room with 3 bats and 3 blue boomerang baddies, I drop 2 consecutive bombs to kill 2 of the 3 blue boomerangers where i could have killed some bats as well or even all 6 enemies with the 2 bombs. This is misleading because killing any of the bats before i killed the boomerangers would not have allowed me to get a bomb drop there. I tried to prevent this from happening as much as possible but unfortunately it does a few times.

Enemy Manipulations:

Since this is a swordless run it would seem unfair to compare dungeon room completion times to the any% runs. There is no sword present which makes it considerably harder to complete rooms in as timely a fashion (especially blue darknut rooms), because without the sword you can not do things like lay a bomb/swing your sword at the same time (possibly setting up enemies in a group) and swing your sword when the bomb explodes hitting them with both and doing extra damage (cutting down on enemy cooldown and bomb usage).

The Route:

As you can imagine the route plan for a swordless run is drastically different from an any% since you can only hit the dragon bosses of level 4 and 8 with the wand, and to get that you must get the ladder from level 4. With that in mind I believe that the route is pretty much fully optomized.

On another note, would it be faster to pick up a couple of those post-boss heart tanks you just barely miss and grab the Silver Sword after Level 5? It doesn't seem like it is very far off the path and it would save time against Ganon (not to mention allow for more damage boosts). If you have to collect the sword to beat the game, it really shouldn't matter which sword you get or when you get it, in my opinion.
First off, thanks for taking the time to watch the run, and present your arguments in a reasonable way, unlike the first comment posted on here. 1) As this may be technically true, I sacrifice getting the sword in order to complete the game as stated in my submission notes. In my opinion, without completing a game it would be pointless to even run it, and I felt as though it would get a hearty rejection if any of the other movie endings were chosen. Also as stated, the sword was not used throughout the run until the fight with Ganon, and I believe that this is a reasonable exception to be made. 2) You are gladly entitled to your opinion on the entertainment value of the run, but I am happy to see that most of the other members (many of them senior members) who have watched the run disagree. I feel like playing through the game w/o a sword is very entertaining just for the fact that the sword is our hero's primary weapon and as was commented on earlier in the thread, is quite impressive to be able to complete even 1 dungeon, let alone all 9 (with the exception of Ganon of course) without it. I felt that the discussions and desire to see this run made in the forums was enough reason for me to choose to make this run and ultimately submit it. As to getting heart containers and picking up the white sword, I have to guess that this would in fact be slower than just getting the wooden sword. The time saved from extra enemy boosting is somewhat arbitrary and many times it would affect the enemy drops in a non-favorable way. While having the white sword on Ganon would speed up the fight slightly, you have to take into consideration how far you must travel to get it after level 5. There is no way to screen scroll from level 5 to the white sword room, so one would have to travel 4 screens from the entrance of level 5 w/o the benefit of any glitching. If you read the submission notes for the 1st quest any% they removed getting the white sword for this very reason. I also wanted to present viewers with a run that doesn't pick up any non-essential items such as extra heart containers, thus heightening the entertainment value. Again, thanks for watching and I'm sorry you feel this way.

I think that the guideline exists to deter people from using completely arbitrary goals. From what I have read in the submission text and this thread, completing the game without a sword doesn't sound like a completely arbitrary goal, but a sensible one, akin to "uses a suboptimal character" or "doesn't use the b button" (iow. a sensible and logical limitation is imposed which makes the game more difficult to complete, and hence more entertaining to watch get beaten nevertheless).

I think that's a bit like saying that the Contra pacifist run doesn't "adhere to the stated goal" because it does kill some enemies, out of necessity. If the only place where the sword is required (and hence used) is in the very last boss, then I would say it does adhere to the stated goal: To complete the game (in the sense of getting to the very end, to the last boss) without using the sword. The sword being mandatory at the very end isn't such a huge catastrophe with regard to this goal.

as far as using the sword is concerned, it is well known that ganon can not be defeated without a sword. Anybody who does a swordless quest knows this and the actual completion of this challenge is the entering of ganon's lair. At that point player doing this quest has the option of finishing the game off with the sword or calling it a day but either way the challenge is over. For a TAS this is no different. He doesn't use the sword until the swordless challenge is over, and which point he decided to finish ganon off just to show the game completion for the TAS (since we tend to prefer completed games). Think of this as "bonus coverage"

I'm not sure that the completion goals of off-site runs should matter, regardless of how well-known they are. Especially in this case, since the goal does not explicitly include beating the game. The comparison to the Contra Pacifist run isn't enough to sway my opinion for three reasons: 1) It assumes that I would have voted yes for the original Contra Pacifist run. I probably wouldn't have since the gameplay doesn't seem to gain much by the added restriction either. 2) "Pacifist" as goal choice is rather vague, whereas "Swordless" is not. "Pacifist" could imply several things, including never defeating enemies, never killing humanoids, never firing weapons, never killing anything unless needed, etc. In this case, vagueness is actually a plus, since it requires a look at the submission text in order to find out the real goal of the run. A much better comparison would be if the "Pacifist" run were instead named the "No Kills" run. "Swordless" implies that the sword is either never obtained or never used, not that it is never used except when absolutely necessary. 3) In theory, the goal of never killing anything is more interesting than never using the sword. The sword has several replacements, including the bombs and wand. Killing things has no true substitute (other than avoiding them). In practice, this is a lot less interesting for a TAS compared to a regular speedrun (since avoiding enemies is neither all that impressive nor that different from regular play while TASing) but that's a different argument entirely. I won't be upset when this is accepted, and I do think that this run is entertaining and well-done. I just don't think that "Swordless" as a category is different enough to deserve a separate category. Then again, I fully recognize that my standard for branches is much higher than the average person's. Just because my opinion doesn't really matter in the long run doesn't mean I can't share it.

I enjoyed this. It was interesting seeing the bomb killing strategies as well as the path chosen. Even though it wasn't "Swordless," I agree with adelikat in that he completed his goal, which is where the entertainment was. I think freezing or dying in Gannon's room would have been just as enjoyable Yes vote

If taken literally, the title would denote that the character is opposed to any and all acts of violence and would attempt to complete the game w/o any bloodshed. Yet I think most people are reasonable enough to look past these minor infractions and accept a run of this type as 100%.

I agree with jprofit. I know it's not at TASVideos, but think of the Ninja Gaiden 2 "pacifist" run from speedruns.net. ALL the boss battles could not be done without hitting the bosses! There is no difference between that and this, and this remains entertaining. Besides, the sword wasn't actually used until only the very end against Ganon. And it doesn't matter that he simply HAS the sword, as in Ninja Gaiden 2 run the TASer has no choice but to HAVE the sword, and simply doesn't use it except as necessary vs. bosses. I stand by my "Yes" vote emphatically.

It seems irresponsible to talk about the implications of certain words without realizing words are meant to have certain meanings in certain contexts, and you are intentionally (annoyingly, pedantically) misrepresenting that context when making your evaluation. As adelikat mentioned, "swordless" is understood to have a certain meaning with respect to this game, and this run is consistent with that understanding. Since joining this site I have often wondered why people such as yourself bother to vote (and vote no) on runs like this. Whereas other people vote no when a run can be shown to be more or less objectively bad, you vote no because you don't think it's valid that anyone should be entertained by this run of obviously very high quality. Is that your decision to make?

He's free to express his opinion, and all that I really care about is that he does explain his opinion (instead of silently voting no, which is more problematic). The voting system isn't anything more than a rough gauge of how the audience feels about a given run anyway. I'd much rather someone say "You know, I just didn't like this run, and this is why" than feel that they can't speak their mind because they don't agree with everyone else. That said, I still think he's being excessively pedantic. :)

Thanks for all the support guys! Spweasel is of course free to make his own judgments and I hope this thread doesn't end up in some sort of flame war because of it. I have tried to justify my view in an intelligible and constructive way, and if that's not enough then so be it. He is also in the vast minority so far in voting and opinion so I'm not really discouraged by his views, since there will almost always be disagreements as to whether a run should be published or not. Once again thanks to all for taking the time to watch and vote/comment. :)

Meh, seniority doesn't really matter. It is more of a 'we-can't-get-rid-of-this-nerd' type thing. I am interested in viewing, but don't recall a youtube. Will edit in an opinion if there is a link, though.

Very well spoken. People are entitled to their opinions, and all (rational) opinions are valuable even if they go against the majority. We should not denigrate someone's opinion just because it goes against what the majority thinks, but on the contrary, we should welcome it. That's what civil discussion is all about. As Derakon says, it's much better to hear a dissenting opinion being spoken out than one being silenced. (After all, publication is not dependent on 100% agreement among all the voters, and all opinions are useful for the judges.)

Watched it thank to Aktan's encode (mp4 encode sound seems off, btw). This run is different enough to warrant a publish, IMO. If not that, it at least could go into the technical demos section. Hard to add much more to it than that; people are always going to balk at this category because there's a difference between the rules and the spirit of the rules. That's fine, but if this is a site about entertaining and creative runs, I just don't see a good reason this can't find a home here.

I agree that seniority doesn't/shouldn't matter for publication purposes, but I would say that the opinions of those who have invested such time in this site and likely have a more polished view as to what is acceptable/unacceptable for publication here give me a warm fuzzy feeling inside. :) Not to take anything away from newer members (because of course I'm also one of them). :P

It's the only weapon that can hurt him; nothing else hits him until you get him to the point where the silver arrows come into play.

After finally getting around to watch this run, I must say this actually wasn't too unentertaining of a run with a good bunch of glitches and surprises. Yes vote.
