After dampening TASing I decided I like to do a platformer that doesn't have a current run up on TASvideos. I decided on Densetsu No Stafy (aka Legend of Stafy/Legendary Stafy). I actually own the game, imported it back in 2007. It's a rather simple platformer which has a large amount of water. The story is really simple to follow, Stafy is up in the Sky Castle and clumsily drops a magical jar which holds some evil guy named Ogura. He is released from the jar and wrecks havoc on the Sky Castle knocking Stafy into the sea below. So its up to you to fix everything. The game is divided up into 9 stages, with the first stage serving as a tutorial (thus the shortest stage). Along the way there are a few power ups/techniques you can get. I'm aiming for an any percent run, going for the quickest time possible avoiding anything I don't need. In order to even consider doing a 100% run one has to complete the game at least once anyways. I like to thank Chamale for his topic on the game (which hasn't seen any posts since 2007). His WIP .vbm showed me quit a few tricks. Such as allowing Left+Right at the same time to shave some frames at in the first stage. Unfortunately for his run, he was running it on a intro hacked rom (Eurasia I think) which adds an unnecessary 27 additional frames to his run. I also like to note while following his excellent run, I managed to shave off an additional 54 frames (along with the 27 frames from the intro) off his run by the end of stage 3 (a grand total of 84 frames). I've just finished the 4th stage which you can see HERE(obselete) I like to note the following:
VBA 1.7.2 v19.3 is used Taking damage at certain parts actually saves time Left+Right inputs are used Luck Manipulation is used
I'll keep you all informed on progress, I'm hard at work at it. Tell me what you think. --- Progress: 4th stage finished, planning for 5th. (Taking a break for the time being)

I'm not really into Stafy but: Someone called tarby made a glitched run. http://bb2.atbb.jp/tas/viewtopic.php?t=15 I figured, you might want to know about it.

Ah Stafy is really really awesome... but yeah there is already a thread about it.

Whoa, thanks a bunch, I'll watch it a few times to see what kind of tricks I could use in a non-glitched run. EDIT: Come to think of it, one could do a 100% run (meaning all 45 treasures (not counting all 202 entries in the book or the book), I just messed around and it could be possible though I'm not sure what guarantees to start with a 'completed' game.

I know it sounds incredible, but after 2 years YOU CAN STILL POST IN THAT THREAD!

My bad then, most sites I visit shun posting in threads that are over a year old. Plus I can't edit the first post or topic title. EDIT: If you all want it within one thread, can a mod merge the two topics? (with mine being added to Chamale's)

I'm repeating the 4th stage again to shave some frames off. EDIT: I can say I've already saved over 100 frames, using a new technique (which I've should of thought of earlier) 2nd EDIT: 212 frames saved so far, clipping corners while in water slows your momentum, dashing across ice is slower than the other levels, so jumping at the right time can help gain speed far quicker. edit: after repeating 7000 frames , 253 frames have been shaved. Only 13,000 more frames to go through then I can start on stage 5 :O edit: taking damage in the room with the eels out of water at certain parts help shaved tons of time, 409 frames saved so far.

Stage 4 redone Repeating 20,000 frames saved 499 frames. Now I can start planning for the 5th stage, the problem is do I go for the star dash upgrade or not. I'm not sure if the time getting it would save time later in on the in the run. It can go through multiple blocks in a row instead of just one like the regular spin dash. I'm gonna have to see how many blocks will show up further in the game that must be destroyed. Enjoy. EDIT: Up until a certain point in the 5th stage, you have a choice to take an alternative path to get an upgraded spin dash (i'm referring to it as the star dash). Attempting to get it you half to do this little trial thing with a time limit, even after doing the trial you have to repeat a small portion of the stage again in order to get back to that point. Overall without actually testing it in game frame by frame it will not save frames within the future. I went through each stage finding the blocks you absolutely have to break in order to progress to the next area. Stage 5 Stage 6 Stage 7 Stage 9 The last picture takes place in a scrolling section of a stage, and since it takes place in front of a door I included it, though one could easily get around it andsave time. Looking at each spot you have to use it, it would seem that skipping the star dash would in fact be the faster way to go. The star dash has a different animation than the regular spin dash, it can plow through multiple blocks unlike the spin dash but when you hit an enemy/boss, it does not keep on going. I need to test if it goes further (and if it does, how long does it last before it wears out). I also need to test if the star dash will in fact hurt the final boss in one hit or two(like the spin dash). More testing to follow. edit: Just tested it out, it turns out they are identical in speed, distance, and length of the animation. By pushing against a wall and letting a dash go at a 1000 mark on each, they both traveled the same distance within 38 frames (when the animation ends) they ended up in the same exact spot. I'm gonna say the star dash (or should I say just an slightly improved spin dash) will not be used as it would actually cost time in order to get it.

Thread Revival Time! I've seen your WIP and decided to shorten it! Improvements are mainly faster start-ups and some optimizations. Improvements: First Stage: 69 Frames Saved. Second Stage: 108 Frames Saved. For a total of 177 Frames Saved (00:02.95 Seconds). You can find the WIP here.

Here's a Wip. And here's some info about the WIP: ScreenShot: Frame 6220 Addresses Used: *03006462 - Horizontal Speed *03006466 - Vertical Speed *0300645A - Horizontal Position *0300645E - Vertical Position *03000F7C - Boss Health Tricks Used: *Quick Start-up: To start moving in any direction earlier, hold the d-pad in that direction for 1 frame before using the A button. *Reset Spin Timeout: To reset the 3 spin limit earlier, sometime after the speed has reduced by 1, hold any direction + A for 1 frame, before Spining. *Quick Water entrance: Whilst on land, jump to enter a body of water instead of falling. *Demo Glitch: This simply unlocks all stages and vehicles, nothing more. Stage Comments: Stage 2: I ride on a balloon, then exit the stage, nothing special. Stage 9: I reset the spin timeout to exit the first room earlier, then skip some miniquest. I somehow bypass a laser gate, unlocked the boss door, and now stuck on luck mainipulation. Thanks to: *Chamale - Gave me the idea to try Legendary Starfy. *Applepieman - Gave me motivation to optimize the movie. *Gocha - For this run. Notes: Currently rerecorded 10505 times. I'm simply stuck trying to get the boss to kill himself. If all goes well, I would be done by the end of this week.

Ok. It looks like the input got erased in that vbm. I get stuck on the title screen and there arent any button presses untill frame 3494. The rest after that is blank. EDIT: Wait....What just happened?! Youre at the final level?! What is going on?!

I checked it out. Apparently, if you end the demo, Starfi's Horizontal Position remains, while it's vertical position resets. The trick is to get Starfi's Horizontal Positon to 130, so at the second demo, it'll desync and allow you to play with all the stages unlocked. It was first mentioned by gocha here. I simply attempted to obesolete the run by using all the tricks me and the previous runners found.

Thanks for the response!^^ As for another version, I'll try to squeeze out several more frames at the laser gate and sky rooms. I hope it goes well.

You know, Since the game is so short, I think this game could use a 100% as well as an any%. Just saying.

You are right, but I just discovered something. Everytime you find a treasure box, the level ends, which means I have to replay 9 levels 6 times! I'm sure noone would mind given the fact that I explore 6 different parts of the same level, but it might bore the viewers.

I just checked Gamefaqs. A 100% run will be: *Complete Group Photo (Need 9999 Pearls) *Complete Photo book (Kill/Encouter 202 Characters) *Find All Treasures (6 per stage) *All Minigame unlocked (Easy enough) *All movies unlocked. (Requirements are in Gamefaqs.) Notes: *You unlock all the stages with the Demo glitch, but the bosses aren't in the picture book. Which means I need to beat all 9 levels 7 times! *I need to kill/bump into every character in the game at least once, including the ones that appear in the secret rooms. * I should beat the level 9 last so that I can unlock all movies or something. *9999 pearls.....I think I need to take note of the amont of pearls that appear in every stage. This will be harder than I thought.

He is a cute little star. I will enjoy the any%, but I don't know if a 100% will have the entertainment value for publication. You could poll IRC or ask adelikat or something. Actually, why not post a WIP of 100% the first level? That would be a quick way to show the general length of the game with the repetition included. This way you would only waste time beating one level at 100%, as opposed to making a whole run and getting rejected for entertainment value.

I currently have problems with the last boss. I need him to move towards the portal instead of away. So I can't submit the movie yet. But at least I saved 1 frame before the boss. I also redid the auto-scroller to make it more interesting. Wip. Edit: Since, I'm still stuck at the final boss, I'll just attempt to save yet more frames in the previous rooms.

Sad news. I just found out that using the demo glitch, you cannot obtain pictures of certain characters (The Mermaid, for example) as you only encounter them during the main story. With the glitch used, you never get to talk/encounter them, so it's impossible to do 100%. Which means a 100% run would have to start at a fresh new game (AKA Warpless).

Update: Everytime I find an improvement, the randomness for the auto-scroller changes, which means I need to redo that part again. I will post a WIP after I get it done.
