Looks like we have a real winner here. DoDonPachi DaiFukkatsu "Arrange A" mode. Link to video Previously the company has been responsible for abominations such as this and this. Also, please note the boss has been designed around a gameplay feature that lets you erase bullets with shot under specific conditions, but that doesn't make it any less ridiculous and over-the-top. :D Still have to wait for a week or so until EMS gets it here…

As much as I love the ridiculous colourful splashes and patterns they create, what about some NON-shmup hardest bosses of all time?

Mike Tyson is an obvious candidate for toughest boss battle for non-shmup games.

Oh yeah, I tried the demo on a friend's iPad, it controlled pretty smooth. I think I also recommended it to Deign some time ago. :P But the Xbox360 port I'm getting will be the real deal, can't wait for it to arrive.

A hundred years from now, they will gaze upon my work and marvel at my skills but never know my name. And that will be good enough for me.

Maybe you're in some place where you can't see this video. That's sad.

Try this. It's the same video from the original source, should be available.

Before video: A shmup - a CAVE shmup on the iphone? How does that work? After video: Oh, I see. That actually sounds like it would be fun.

The hardest time I've ever had with a boss was with Metal Sonic in Sonic 2, followed directly by the final boss. But then again, I really sucked at video games back then.

Anyone remember when we had to do with maybe 32 sprites at a time? Not me either.

The NES could actually do 64 at any given time (of course, a game could have more active, just not drawn to screen).

The boss at the Sun in Gyruss (NES). That was one wicked boss.

The Sacred Grounds level in Cave Story (single hardest set of levels in the game that even put the "hidden" last cave to shame) followed by a regular boss and then the real big bad of the game (who has three forms), all without saving, surely that qualifies?

That one was pretty good, yeah, but then again it took me 5 or 6 tries to formulate strategies required to kill Ballos effectively. Hibachi is a whole another level surely. :P Btw, another try at it. This time the player knows what he's doing, but apparently that isn't enough. The previous boss (the one at the start of the video) goes down in the most hilarious way ever. [EDIT] More hilarity! Here's how Arrange B mode looks at nearly maxed-out rank. Seriously, that's insane.

I can only talk from limited experience but I remember Viewtiful Joe having some tough bosses and then there's Giga Bowser on very hard mode in SSBM.

I hear that the boss named Yiazmat in the game Final Fantasy XII takes a bit of work to defeat... (Never played the game, though, as I don't own the required console. Would have otherwise.)
