This run corresponds to Baxter's first one. I liked his idea of 2 separate TASes for Rockin'Kats but I've noticed that it's possible to improve two levels and boss battle - there were obvious flaws. But then Baxter proved that even some other levels can be improved, so I've done my best and finally managed to save some frames everywhere.
I think I wouldn't make frame-perfect TAS without seeing almost frame-perfect one. Baxter's run gave me tough milestones to compete. Too bad there's no way to move this run under mark of 1 minute. I tried everything I know, even disassembled several parts of code but got nothing... almost nothing, that's it.
Also I think, me or anybody else would NEVER achieve same result in normal run (one that includes Channels 1-5).
About frame-perfectness of the TAS (yeah, I'm so anxious for it).
If the run was just 2 frames faster, FCEU would show 1:03 time, but none of crazy things I tried could help to retrieve these 2 frames. So, after last two weeks I gave up. If it isn't the game's limit of improvement then it is my limit of patience.
The game is strange and unpredictable. It has much more factors to think about than average NES platformer have. And take into account this inhuman lag... That's why I won't say it cannot be improved anymore, sure there's little chance, but now to improve 1 frame you must spend insanely great amount of time, and it's not guaranteed that this won't make you lose several frames later (lag can accumulate by little portions). So, I think this kind of situation can be called frame-perfectness.

adelikat: Well, this run is receiving good votes. In addition it is entertaining and of high quality. Accepting.

good run. I liked Baxters version, so naturally I am voting yes for this 2 seconds faster movie.

A very impressive run. It reminded me a bit of Umihara Kawase run. Naturally voting without a doubt yes.

I uploaded the encoded video to http://pvpgn.pc-hass.de/~mywebspace/videos/NES%20Rockin'%20Kats%20in%2001.04%20by%20AnS.mkv Endoder settings used: Video: x264 @ 365 kbit/s 2 pass length: 02:46 Audio: Vorbis @ q0 (~47 kbit/s iirc) The video ends after the music has stopped at the ending screen. I also added chapters :) a bit useless, but I just figured out how to do that and I wanted to try it. File size is 5,14 MB. BTW I enjoyed that run :D good work. Edit: Man, there's always a character in the links I post that phpbb doesn't like.

LaserSokrates, thanks, but don't you think all the subtitles (telling about tool-assistance and everything) should be inserted to AVI before compressing the video with lossy-codec? BTW, wait a little bit, it seems I've found a way to save 1 frame, if I'll find how to save another one I'll resubmit this TAS with 1:03 timing!

I don't know how to hardcode subtitles, perhaps I can do this via avisynth which I always use. And I don't know if this makes too much sense as the credits are given at the downloadpage and possible "stealers" (people who upload to youtube claiming it's their legit playing) just remove the beginning. But I'll have a deeper look into that. Edit: The guide explaining how to convert fcm to avi is somehow limited concerning subtitles. There's only a very restrictive package that allows the use of subtitles, and I haven't found a way to convert this specific subtitle format into hardcoded subs using avisynth, at least that's the method I'd prefer. If someone has an idea, post it.

Mencoder is a good way to encode AVIs.

I know that mencoder is a good way to encode avis, but I'd just prefer a way with avisynth. I'm currently using the CLI of x264 (not the VfW- version) with MeGUI and I think the results are quite good, and encoding doesn't take long. As I'm using Avisynth, I'm looking for a way to hardcode the subtiltles with Avisynth, and not with the encoder.

Sudden update! I've found cool glitch! (walking on air) Although it helped to save only 5 frames, that's enough to make the run 1 second faster. I think I'll just change the file for this submission.

Warning: When making decisions, I try to collect as much data as possible before actually deciding. I try to abstract away and see the principles behind real world events and people's opinions. I try to generalize them and turn into something clear and reusable. I hate depending on unpredictable and having to make lottery guesses. Any problem can be solved by systems thinking and acting.
