That would save time. But, you need the reset version of mupen, which isn't allowed on the site since it resets the emulator, and not the ROM, which is the opposite of all other accepted reset-capable emulators.
Not allowed? What about this run?

Notice that run has not been accepted. Of course, I've never understood what is so bad about resetting the emulator rather than the game. Isn't that akin to turning the system off and then back on again? If so, what is so bad about that? Obviously, it would be best to be able to achieve both a soft reset and a hard reset (be able to choose either) but... what's wrong with a hard reset? That could be done on an actual system...

The thing was that the command to reset that version of mupen causes Linux to crash. Years ago when I asked DeHackEd about it, he vetoed the emulator as being unacceptable for submissions. More N64 runs besides Yoshi Story would benefit from it, such as Majora's Mask, Mario Kart 64, Ocarina of Time, etc. but the current ruling on it, as I understand is that it's not allowed.

If it's true that it is possible with the actual console and it makes Ocarina of Time runs better, then it should be allowed imo

Has anyone noticed that the Japanese game seems to have different fruit placements on the level? One example I saw was on level 2 of the Japanese tas. At 2:52 on the youtube video, you can see 2 melons suspended in bubbles. In the American version, there is only 1. Subtle changes like that can affect strategy. Also, I wonder if it was really wise to waste 30+ seconds in shy guy limbo just to get to the ghost castle on the last page. I was thinking that 6-1 or 6-2 would be just as fast to play through.

In 2-2, the next fruit is really not that far away, so it won't be TOO huge of an issue. If there was a game-breaking glitch or physics change I'd consider using the J ROM, but not for the different placement of one fruit. Regarding 6-1 and 6-2, both are slower than Boo Castle, moreso than the 30 seconds needed to use in 5-3. The Boo room gives so many fruit, that it's worth the route detour. I'll have to see if that Boo room only triggers the heart due to lucky fruit collection (if it does, I may have to reconsider which lucky fruit I pick in the beginning... ulp)

Well thats good to hear. I only mentioned the J thing, in case you were doing any direct comparisons to the times in that run. Anyway, good luck on the run dude!

Finished 2-2 last night; so far 2101 frames ahead of mine and swordlesslink's attempt (We didn't get to 3-1, so no more comparisons). Hero was right, there was one less bubble holding a melon, but it wasn't too bad... I collected the singleton melon slightly faster, and it didn't take me much longer to grab the last fruit, which was right next to the rollie-wheel. Like maybe 1-2 seconds slower from that, no big deal. I still probably came out faster than the Japanese run, due to more precision, less slowdown, and a faster overall top speed. Edit: 3-1 done. Edit: 4-1 done. Edit: 5-3 done. One more stage to go, then submit time!

I'm interested in TAS of the game. Please tell me what to do in 100%. I think 0. all stages 1. all melons 2. all hearts 3. wakes all warp guys up 4. helps black and white yoshi Is there anything else?

There could be an argument for 'max happy-ness' I believe it is called? I do not know the game well enough to know the details though. Is that unpractical?

Stages, Melons, Hearts, Black/White Yoshi. You won't need to worry about all the warp guys; you may want to wake them only if it allows faster routes. Now's not a good time for me (Finals + Graduation) but if you're serious about this I need to give you all of the tricks and glitches utilized in my submitted Any% run; especially about acceleration. Also, I'd wait to see the status of my run, since you are going to have to use the record reset-mupen I used, to skip cutscenes and reset after each time Bowser is defeated. Another option is to play the Time trials; I don't know for that how it works. All I know is a clear SRAM means blank trials, but I'm uncertain what beating Bowser does.

If you read the "Basics" section of this FAQ, it explains this:

-Story Mode- Story Mode is what you would call the 1 player part, well actually everything is 1 player but that's beside the point. Each world is represented by a page in a six page book, the book being the game of course. Each page has 4 levels, regular 2D, side-scrolling fun. You can only play 1 level per page in one game. So an entire game is six levels, pretty short you must admit. At the first page you can select any of the four levels, after that it takes a Star Fox 64 like path. In each level there are hearts, if you collect one you can pick one more stage in the next page. Collect all three in a world and you can select from any of the four levels in the next page. When you first buy YS (like I did) I would suggest going to all of the levels because then you can play them all in Trial Mode (we're getting to that soon). I try to avoid Story Mode because of the terrible singing (you'll see) and the fact you can only play six levels per game. This is why I usually only play.... -Trial Mode- In this mode you can play any levels you have completed in Story Mode. Try playing them all in a row, whew! Doesn't seem so short now does it? =) There are 24 levels in all, and that should be your goal. What the creators intended this to be is a mode to get High Scores. You can do that, but I usually play this all of the time because there's absolutely NO singing, sucky endings, dumb level branching, or crazy pop up books! Amazing, isn't it? :)
It definitely sounds like playing every level in Trial Mode while finding all the hearts would make most entertaining "100%" TAS! That requires SRAM, but it would be most fun to watch for me, anyway.

Could you go for high scores at the same time as those other goals?

Thanks for your kindness. But you don't have to explain those to me if now is your important time. Take care of yourself :D Additionally, perhaps I can't understand well because I am not good at English . Going for high scores sounds nice. I'll go for higher scores unless I delay big.

I have to ask. Is a 100% run of this game even possible? As in all Levels? Or whatever a 100% run would entail? Whenever I played this game when I was younger, and had rented it from the local Video Store, it seemed like no matter what I did, I couldn't unlock and play every single level.

YOu have to get all the hearts on the levels to get all of the other levels. the problem with an all levels TAS is you would have to watch a run that resets four times. you can only pick one stage per level.

Are there any people who know PURPLE YOSHI? I read this and I'm confusing because I have never heard PURPLE YOSHI. http://www.gamefaqs.com/n64/199386-yoshis-story/faqs/3437 Should I collect all coins ? Well, I'm working on this and I've finished 1-1,1-2 and 1-3 as testrun with J.version in order to realize all things which is needed in 100%.

Ohhh, okay. Personally, I enjoy 100% runs so much I don't mind if a game has to be reset a few times. They're my favorite kinds of Speed Runs and TASes. I never knew the Hearts were required when I played the game so many years ago.

I noticed what I don't have to consider Black & White Yoshis. Because I do in Trial Mode.

I found a glitch work on only J version. However, there is no place which I should use that glitch so far. Also, perhaps I won't use that glitch because there is no place ...
