Well, it's very true that taking any medication over a long period of time makes your body get used and adapt to it. The longer you take it, the less of an actual effect it has on your system. Once you've reached that point where the body has fully adapted to it, but the medication hasn't eliminated the source of the problem, you've actually done more harm than good to your body. (Now, after taking away the drug, it will effectively have worsened the symptoms. Until the body readapts again.) So taking any medication that surely has some effects on the body over a long period of time, but we're not so sure whether it helps the body eliminate the source of illness, can in fact be very dangerous. This is why the whole idea of "Try this anti-depressant over the next few months, maybe it helps! We have data it helps about 20% of patients that share your symptoms!", seems kind of insane to me. Let's say it's an SSRI, then surely the body will conclude over that few months that it has to produce less serotonine to adapt to it in many cases. The solution? Try a different one, increase the dosis and take it over an even longer period of time? I'm not saying anti-depressants can't help people, I'm just saying that taking them over extended periods of time, just in case they might help, is kind of insane. Most psychologists would agree that taking SSRIs without a corresponding behavioural therapy isn't advicable (their bias is obvious, but so is the bias of the opposing parties). The source of the problem are not SSRIs, but the incompetence of the people prescribing them. And in many countries, they even receive certain boni for being that incompetent.

Many people have the notion that all drugs that affect the brain are harmful and dangerous, dull your senses and capacity for thinking, and that psychiatrists are just quack doctors making random experiments on people with dangerous drugs. You should also hear the other side of the coin. For example, a guy explained to me how he has this attention deficit disorder, which caused him great problems in learning and doing work (in other words, it was very difficult for him to concentrate on one thing for even moderate periods of time, making studying and learning anything very difficult, as well as doing any kind of work or job). A doctor prescribed a drug for him, and his life made a 180-degree turn. He told how it was like the difference between night and day. He could concentrate on things, he could easily learn new things, he could perform his job significantly more efficiently than before. He could finally feel the joy of learning, working, and getting things done satisfactorily. The quality of his life increased enormously. Are psychotropic drugs sometimes misprescribed or abused? Of course. But so is all medicine in one form or another. That doesn't make the medicine or the medical practice bad.

Yeah, there's a reason why some sane countries have outlawed Scientology. They've seriously done just about every insane thing you can imagine: slave labor, locking up people with a serious illness, preventing them from getting treated, they've harassed individuals who left the church and journalists investigating them, they've defrauded the government, and the list just goes on and on. This isn't just some weird conspiracy theory I'm spouting here, this is all extremely well-documented. Scientology is basically a massive international extortion racket. Given that the entire thing was dreamt up by a science-fiction writer, it's kind of difficult to believe it has any followers at all.
