Brain Age 2, also known as "More Brain Training from Dr. Kawashima" in PAL regions, is a sequel to Brain Age. It is a puzzle game to exercise your brain a little each day. You will play a variety of puzzles to train your brain. Although there has been controversy over the scientific effectiveness of the game in keeping your brain active, the game got very popular.

Game objectives

  • Emulator used: desmume-0.9.6
  • Abuses programming errors
  • Is a demonstration
  • Manipulates luck
  • Uses game restart sequence
  • Launches a rocket in every minigame

About the run

I was going to draw a detailed picture in every math problem. However, my previous Brain Age TAS got a lot of criticisms that it is slow-paced. After all, I gave up the idea of drawing a lot of detailed pictures and decided to make a quick-paced run that aims to launch a rocket in every game.
The main feature of the run is Piano Player.

Brain Age Check

It aims to be the youngest brain age. To achieve the objective, the run must be complete within 1050 frames. There are only 11 math problems and the average time for answering is about 95 frames. This is enough to draw some pictures without failing to achieve the objective.

Sign Finder

I draw no detailed picture here. Since the run aims to launch a rocket, it must be complete within 815 frames here. However, there are no less than 20 math problems. In other words, I must answer in 40 frames, in each problem, on the average. This is too tough to draw pictures.

Piano Player

This is the climax of the movie.

Word Scramble

This is the hardest minigame to abuse the word recognition program. So I wrote strange signs instead of video game stuff.

Memory Sprint

A rocket can be launched by solving all problems, no matter how long I spend. In other word, I can draw detailed pictures. The movie ends here because other minigames can’t be unlocked in the same day.

Special thanks

  • ISM and 890, for their Piano Player run.

DarkKobold: Claimed.

DarkKobold: I personally thought the goal choice was great, and the movie was well executed, given those goals. However, as has been noted in this thread and the previous, the amount of actual TASing content versus the amount of cutscenes was an underwhelming amount. The piano part was only interesting in the sense that the game did not register incorrect notes. Beyond that, the description of cacophony was pretty accurate. While yes, this is a different game than Brain Age 1, it is still impossible to ignore the existence of the previous movie, which was an exceptional TAS. It seems like this movie is a repetition of the previous concept, without adding new entertainment. A large amount of the audience felt this way, and thus, I am rejecting this.
This decision was difficult for me to make. For example, both [1360] FDS Super Mario Bros. 2 "warps, Mario" by HappyLee in 08:06.96 and [1715] NES Super Mario Bros. "warps" by HappyLee in 04:57.31 are far more identical movies, yet both are published. However, Brain Age/Brain Age 2 are not pure speedruns. They are movies that aim for entertainment at the sacrifice of speed (I'm sure this movie could be done much faster, if speed were the only goal). Thus, I had to judge purely on whether the audience found this entertaining. While a 'majority' found it entertaining, almost every serious submission gets at least 60% yes votes. I balance that with the actual content of posts, which were majorly negative.

Is this the same as the 8 minute run I already voted yes on? I am confused.

I think this time, it's a mix between both submissions. It has the whole 8 minutes of the first submission, while it has the improved piano section of the second submission.

Yes, we decided that it was too convoluted of a mess to keep as an old submission. Hence, the new submission and new commentary.

Now, with both the improved piano section and the rest of the entertainment in, I think this is the version that should be published. I wonder why this is voted even lower (4/0/4 at time of writing) than the other two Brain Age 2 submissions lately. This one is supposed to contain the best of both runs.

No voters make no sence and didn't give their opinion. I vote meh,it's Brain Age,finally feel this one is better than the 2 minutes version,I really like the Brain Age 1,but have no sence about this one. Whether it should be published is not important.I don't have any ideas to vote no.So meh instead of no.
Do the work.

I'm voting 'yes' because the piano section was really entertaining, and the rest of the run (minus some of the memory sprint sections) was still a great watch. I think the style of the drawing sections is different enough from the currently-published Brain Age TAS, mainly because there are more varying game modes to play around in. For example, the abstract scribbles in the word scramble game were nicely contrasted with the more-complete drawings in other stages. I do think that there's more potential here, and I would hope that it's possible to create an even more entertaining TAS for this game. I liked one poster's suggestion that you start from a predefined save with all games unlocked, since you could pick out all of the best ones that way.

Would the gained advantage be large enough to allow breaking one of the more fundamental rules?

I will vote when I can see it via an encode, but I appreciate that Ryuto remade this several times. You really care about the fans!

Probably because they felt what they said previously regarding the other recent BA2 submissions apply to this too, and no point reiterating it.

I feel that this rule was probably created with more traditional games in mind. Starting from a predefined save for Brain Age doesn't mean that you start "in the middle of the game", so to speak. I can see it making for a better movie. The memory sprint just doesn't seem to fit well within the TAS framework as there's nothing to super-play, for instance. Perhaps other challenges would do better. I'll abstain from voting as I am unable to watch the submission and the improved piano section might be the most awesome thing in the world and swing my vote around to yes. But seeing as the memory sprint section appears to remain unchanged, it'll probably still be a no.

It wouldn't affect my vote one way or the other, but it would be nice to have a list of songs that were played in the piano part.

My post in the previous topic still applies. As for the rest of the run, it starts off strong, but once you get to the meat of it, (the daily exercises) it falls flat. The last picture is enough for a small twitch on the right side of my mouth.

I still think that the run would benefit from having more funny pictures instead of random doodles. Also the piano playing being atonal (or whatever the term is, I don't remember now) with the background music makes it a bit annoying to listen to. (Of course the basic idea is to play something completely unrelated to what you are supposed to play and still get a perfect score. However, it sounds a bit awful.) However, these don't detract from the run as much as for me not voting yes. I suppose this would be a "weak yes" in tasing parlance.

I still like the TAS run of the first game better. However, this is an awesome run regardless. It's just fun to watch. Voting yes!
