Aqfaq's Comments

As you can see, the main improvement is using a trick to go through walls. It requires four steps (grab wall, shoot web, jump, shoot web), so no wonder it went unnoticed. It does not work in every place, though.
I had to redo some of the bossfights and managed to improve them. There is still room for additional improvements, but I don't know how to optimize the web swinging, so I'll submit this now. It may take years before anyone else contributes to the obliteration of this game, so why not update the publication while waiting.
I want to keep mmbossman as a co-author, because parts of the run use his input. I hope it is OK.

DarkKobold: The curse of Anoobis is successful! Movie accepted as improvement to the published run.
sgrunt: To be published once I have an off-archive.org streaming encode to publish it with.

Encoding HD. EDIT: 32x can't be losslessly dumped by me.
Warning: When making decisions, I try to collect as much data as possible before actually deciding. I try to abstract away and see the principles behind real world events and people's opinions. I try to generalize them and turn into something clear and reusable. I hate depending on unpredictable and having to make lottery guesses. Any problem can be solved by systems thinking and acting.

Hooray for extra glitches! Anoobis, you've definitely shown extraordinary talent at finding wallzips and such in many different games. It's a shame that so much of this run is hex-edited, instead of redoing to find more improvements, but this is still a very sizable improvement and a good job. Yes vote.
Used to be a frequent submissions commenter. My new computer has had some issues running emulators, so I've been here more sporadically. Still haven't gotten around to actually TASing yet... I was going to improve Kid Dracula for GB. It seems I was beaten to it, though, with a recent awesome run by Hetfield90 and StarvinStruthers. (http://tasvideos.org/2928M.html.) Thanks to goofydylan8 for running Gargoyle's Quest 2 because I mentioned the game! (http://tasvideos.org/2001M.html) Thanks to feos and MESHUGGAH for taking up runs of Duck Tales 2 because of my old signature! Thanks also to Samsara for finishing a Treasure Master run. I can't make a lossless dump, Gens crashes at frame ~90. And I'm not even thinking of making a lossy dump.

I gots a new movie? Wow, thanks for updating this aqfaq, I remember quickly plowing through my run of it ~3 summers ago so that I could submit 3 spider-man movies instead of 2, and with the clunky mechanics of this game, it was probably the least polished of the 3. Thanks for taking the time to polish up this turd, and I'm pleased as punch to be your co-author :)

This needs voters, and an encode.

Finished watching. It wasnt the most exciting Spider Man TAS out there and Level 1 certaintly is a rough start for the movie, but the glitch made this run a lot more entertaining than the previous movie. So im voting Yes. Suggested Screenshot:

Exactly what happens for me as well. And also, why is it labeled as a Genesis game while it's a 32X game? (I know the 32X is an add-on for the Genesis.)

Bad detection on the part of the site. Fixed, in any case. EDIT: It seems starting dumping from frame 145 (just before the first non-blank/non-quiet frame) will allow the game to dump properly. Getting a correct dump is thus a matter of pre-pending 145 blank frames to a dump made in this fashion. Simple, no?

The lack of votes doesn't surprise me at all, this game sucks. I think my original submission got 6 yes and a meh before it was accepted.

Stream up above; primary to follow available here: http://www.archive.org/download/32xSpider-man-WebOfFireByAqfaqMmbossmanIn0645.48/spidermanweboffire-tas-aqfaqmmbossman.mp4 The addition of glitching to an already reasonably fast-paced run (which has the benefit of slightly non-standard gameplay mechanics for a platformer) is enough for me to approve of this improvement.

Wow, that was pretty dull. The highlight, if you can call it that, was probably how they couldn't even be bothered to keep the klaxon at the end in sync with the countdown timer. Still, it's an improvement to a published movie. Nice work, Aqfoobis. Thanks for the encode, Sgrunt! Or sgrunt or whatever.

Is the text in the title screen of the game supposed to be cut off on the right side? (It says "spiderma", "web of fir" and "(c) & TM 1996 Sega, all rights rese".)

My guess is no, but that's the way the emulator renders it. (See also the published encode for the previous movie, which suffers the same problem.)

How do we know this isn't a symptom of some bugs in the emulator that, maybe, the run itself is (inadvertedly) exploiting to get a faster time than should be possible?

Well, the gameplay itself does seem to display at the 320x224 resolution you'd expect, so I'd view the probability of there something being game-breaking on account of incorrect title screen display to be fairly low.

No, it displays normally if it is allowed to fully scroll before pressing Start. If the button is pushed on the first possible frame, it causes the screen to be truncated. So as far as I can tell, it's a bug in the game.
