Hello again! The first run was cancelled due to lack of optimization. The second one was due to using the wrong frame rate, causing the space bar to not work properly. The third, and hopefully the correct one, aims to fix the errors present in the last run. It is an improvement of 1 second over a TAS that also uses the spacebar in Nicovideo.

Objectives

  • Emulator used: hourglass - r71
  • Breaks Beats the game in record time
  • Uses correct frame rate of 60
  • Abuses glitches

Comments

Future runs should also TAS this in 60 fps! It allows the spacebar to work properly!

adelikat: Claimed for judging

adelikat: Ideally I would make a verdict about whether or not to use the speed up (spacebar) option and set some kind of precedent. But in this case I think there was too much confusion to get a consensus and the game had a negative response anyway. So I will dodge that issue completely and reject purely on game choice. See also, #3286: jlun2's Windows Syobon Action in 01:51.63.

adelikat: While this will stay rejected, I wanted to clarify the verdict on the use of 2X speed mode. As stated here, 2X will be considered the use of a cheat code, for this game specifically and is the basis of rejection of this submission.

I hope this version is fast enough for you guys. =P Oh, and the audio desyncs are the game's fault, not the emulator.

I wondered why you didn't use the spacebar in the previous version.... But yes, this is much better, yes vote. Also, could you explain to me why you slowed down and jumped before triggering the end credits?

I didn't know if it was ok. But a post changed my mind. I then tried editing the spacebar in to the last run, but it didn't work. So I instead edited the fps, and started over.

I can't avoid that. I either waste time holding the spacebar to accelerate, or end input early, and therefore slow down slightly due to releasing the spacebar. The nicovideo run also does this.

To be honest, I don't find this version any better than the 30 fps one. It's like watching the video sped up by a factor of two, and the fact that some music overlaps because of it doesn't help its case. :\

I also agree with moozooh. It just looks like a crummy 2x speedup of the same game. (Yes, I'm aware it's exactly that, but that doesn't help its case).

I must say, while the runs are virtually identical, I find the faster version to be much more entertaining and more superplay-like. So here's my support for that and yet another yes vote.

I agree. This is much better than the last one and looks more TAS-like. You can tell it was done with frame precision. A much stronger Yes vote!

Still the same crappy game that isn't very fun to watch. Voting no.

this one changes my "yes" vote to "meh" i find it too fast to watch properly and it looks kind of cheating to the unaware watcher... anyway: a full run should obsolete a world 1 run
How should I know what I think before I read what I post?

Gotta have to agree with that this just looks like a fast-forwarded version of the previous one. Harder to pick up on what's actually going on, and thus less entertaining. Didn't vote on the previous one, but would have voted yes. This one gets a weak "Meh". Weak in as it's very close to being a "No".

First time looking at one of the runs of this game. If I didn't know better, I'd think this was a terrible quality, generic high difficulty hack of the original SMB. Do I find it interesting to watch? Not in the slightest. If I want to watch high difficulty SMB-alikes, I'll go watch #3287: HappyLee's FDS Super Mario Bros. 2 in 08:05.28. Is there technical merit to this run? Probably, but I don't think that counterbalances the general lack of entertainment value. I give this a Meh.

It seems well done, but the game itself seems rather poor -> Meh There are a lot of subpar games on Windows, no need to TAS them all.

This is not bad, but the other version was better. I give this a meh, and I confirm my yes for the other version. I wouldn't be disappointed if you decide to publish this one, but I prefer the other one.

I’m still for yes, it’s short enough to be enjoyable

Upon further thinking, I will vote no this time. The game doesn't seemingly present any real challenge to the author. Another factor is, it isn't entertaining enough to vote yes in my opinion.

I'm voting Yes, because 1- it's really fast and half the time, 2- 30 fps??? 60 fps is much more acceptable, and 3- I don't care for the game, but it looks technically good and is entertaining enough for its duration =P EDIT: BUT if it's the first Windows TAS to be accepted, I should upgrade my vote to Meh, because this really doesn't look special enough to be the first one ever on something +_+

i don't know what to think of it, i liked the 30fps more then this one, not only because you can follow what is going on, but the desync of the sound is also something that makes a game watchable, i'll go with a meh here, on the 30fps it was a yes

Thanks for all the feedback! I'll give this submission another 24 hours or so, and if by then, the no votes exceed the yes votes (or something close), I'll cancel this run, and uncancel the previous run.

Did you try this idea from the previous thread?

Found it. It seems that stages 5 - 8 are part of another game, and that other game doesn't seem to have the first 4 stages.
It has all 8 stages, and it lets you pick which one to start on. I'm not sure how well it runs, but I think that version can be found here.
If you TAS the 8 stage version with the space bar I'd be more inclined to vote yes. I liked this run better than w/o spacebar, despite the awkward sound desynchs. Voting meh for the first time ever.

jlun2, I think the spacebar issue is important enough that BOTH this run and that one should be uncanceled. It's worth having more discussion on this, especially since lots of DOS / Windows games provide ways for people to speed up the game. (For instance, NitroGenesis's run of "The Amazing Spider-Man" uses a faster-than-default PC setting, I believe.) I think that the faster speed means that a viewer doesn't notice the traps as much. As such, I prefer the other one. However, I'm still happy to have this for publication, if it turns out that judges prefer the faster run. Great job with making multiple runs in such a short span of time, by the way!
Used to be a frequent submissions commenter. My new computer has had some issues running emulators, so I've been here more sporadically. Still haven't gotten around to actually TASing yet... I was going to improve Kid Dracula for GB. It seems I was beaten to it, though, with a recent awesome run by Hetfield90 and StarvinStruthers. (http://tasvideos.org/2928M.html.) Thanks to goofydylan8 for running Gargoyle's Quest 2 because I mentioned the game! (http://tasvideos.org/2001M.html) Thanks to feos and MESHUGGAH for taking up runs of Duck Tales 2 because of my old signature! Thanks also to Samsara for finishing a Treasure Master run.
