My favorite is Pantera, Dimebag Darrell rocks at guitar. RIP Dimebag. This is a good song of Pantera: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iBF8D8ljlQQ I'm hearing this song right now!

Probably Tool. They may not be the best ever, but it's hard to find anything about them that isn't very good at least.

Devil Doll, if you count it as metal. If not, probably Esoteric. Can't wait to hear their new album.

Insanely difficult question, since there are so many genres of metal, all of which sound completely different from one another. I like most of them though, and it really depends what I'm in the mood for; to me, they might be as different as jazz and classical music. For old-school metal, it's Iron Maiden and if they count, GNR. For thrash metal (favorite genre), it's Slayer, Megadeth, and Pantera. For death metal, let's go with Children of Bodom. For black metal, probably Gorgoroth and Emperor. For progressive metal, Shaolin Death Squad and Ayreon.

My favorite band right now is probably Annihilator. Jeff Waters is incredible on a stage.

Morbid Angel (1993 - 2000), Megadeth, Deathspell Omega.

As IronSlayer is clearly the authority on all things metallic, I will use his categories to list my bands: Old-school: Motorhead. Thrash: For Teutonic, Sodom, otherwise, probably either Testament or Anthrax. I love Pantera, but I wouldn't put them in the same category as they usually play at much slower tempos. Death: Well, Death. Morbid Angel for something more modern, and Atheist if you want a cool jazz hybrid. Black: Immortal if you're serious, Venom if you're not. Progressive: Dream Theater. King Crimson and Porcupine Tree if you consider their metal elements enough to push them into that genre, which I doubt you would.
All the best, Brandon Evans

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bt-RoSzsEKA I can't go too long without some of that AAL. Then again I don't listen to metal, so I don't know what I'm missing.

Immortal is not true, nor have they ever been. Seen their photos? Music videos? LOL

I wonder if there's any music genre that's harder and more aggressive than deathcore... If you like more melodic death metal, try this (one of my favorites): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0zCPwR4c3bA

Punk/Alternative Rock > Metal Any day.
I would actually love to hear any modern-day punk or alternative that doesn't suck. (The only punk/alternative that I enjoy is from the 70s and 80s) Are there any particular recommendations you have in mind?

Post-punk and sludge are an interesting take on punk. I'd recommend Boris, start with Heavy Rocks or Akuma no Uta. This band plays lots of stuff from ambient to drone metal, and is very much recommended.

Thanks for the mention. Oddly enough, I've listened to Boris before, on the recommendation of a friend. Didn't like them, though.

Ah, too bad. Which albums did you try? If anything, Flood is my favorite, but it's as far from anything punk as it gets.
