I have been looking for my next movie idea and have seen that a lot of movies out there have very few ratings, especially in relation to how many people visit and post on the site. In response to this I had a thought.
Would it be possible/would people be interested in listing the number of movies rated by each user more prominently? What I mean by this is to have the number of movies rated be listed in the same way that your player rank and number of posts is listed on next to your name on a post.
Some reasons why I think it would be a good idea:
-For those who don't actually TAS but contribute to the site as a whole by providing ratings can have evidence of that input, just like someone who posts or TASes a lot would.
-It would add an incentive to rating movies because people who like having large numbers or high rank would want to rate more movies.
-Those two combined would lead to movies getting way more ratings than they currently do, allowing for a more accurate representation of how entertaining each movie is overall.
-Finally, more people viewing and rating each run would allow some of the less popular runs to get some exposure and maybe inspire someone to submit a better version which would improve the site as well.
I acknowledge I am a part of the problem as I haven't rated any movies. I intend to change this soon and go on a rating spree but it was just a thought I had.

I think it's better to rate movies because you really want to rather than because of trying to achieve some cred. If the latter is encouraged, the average quality of the ratings may suffer.

I disagree with Warp's statement. The quality of ratings on TASVideos is currently relatively low when compared to some other sites due to a relatively low sample count. The quality of average ratings only increases with a higher sample count. With very few ratings, a few wildly abnormal ratings can affect the average rating significantly. Anything that encourages more people to rate more items is a good idea. Sites like IMDB and animenewsnetwork have proof of this, with their well-rounded and trustworthy ratings.

It is too laborious to rate movies, that's why I don't rate anymore. It requires 10 clicks as opposed to YouTube and IMDB that require only 1 click. Showing the possible options immediately on the movie page [Rate this movie: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10] would encourage voting.

We are using different meanings for the term "quality". You are using it to mean "reliable" (in terms of statistics) while I was using it to describe the motivation people have for rating (in other words, if someone just tosses ratings to random TASes in order to get some visible counter up, those ratings do not necessarily reflect the quality of the TAS, while people who rate because they truly want to will more often do it with more thought).

I support the idea, but on one condition: it should still be possible to vote on entertainment and tech quality separately and view them as such—whether by some kind of user preferences or 1-2 clicks away, that I don't care about. The separate votes' effect on the combined rating won't have to be changed, either.

Yeah, I also support that idea. As long as the votes themselves stay unchanged (accuracy to tenths, separate entertainment/technical votes), I don't see any downside to making the process far easier to access and use.

I really like this idea. The best way to implement it that I can think of is to have the two pairs of drop-down menus on each movie's main publication page, since a graphical rating system like IMDB has would be hard to allow the accuracy the drop-downs provide.
What should appear if you have already rated a movie?
Would rating still be restricted to those who are logged in (in order to avoid spamming/abuse)? If yes, how would this be much different from the current system? With the current system you can simply click on the "rate this movie" link which jumps to the rating page for that movie. The new system would simply remove that one extra click. I don't see that as such a huge saving.
Basically, how I would envision it.
simplified rating
What you see before rating: a gauge representing the average rating with a numerical value on the right.
How to rate: the gauge becomes active on mouseover; a single click will pass the mark limited to 11 possible values (0–10).
What you see afterwards: the gauge will represent the combined rating by default and your marks on mouseover (like on IMDB).
detailed rating
What you see before rating: a gauge representing the average rating with a numerical value on the right and a link to see the detailed rating.
How to rate: on mouseover, the gauge will split into two active gauges stacked vertically; you pass the mark by clicking on each (with limited precision) or entering the precise value in the small text box to the right, akin to what we have (but possibly without the dropdown lists).
What you see afterwards: the gauge will represent the combined rating by default and will split into two representing your marks on mouseover.
We can possibly just go with the latter option without making it a user preference; it's still simpler and more inviting than what we have.
