(flowplayer module removed)
Bomberman 64 is the first 3-D game within the Bomberman series. It also implements a different single-player mode by incorporating action-adventure and platforming stages, instead of arenas in which enemies or other elements must be destroyed. The game has spawned two sequels on the N64: Bomberman Hero and Bomberman 64: The Second Attack.

Game objectives

  • Emulator used: Mupen64 0.5 re-recording v8 reset v2
  • Aims for fastest time
  • Manipulates luck
  • Plays on hardest difficulty
  • Uses a game restart sequence
  • Genre: Platformer

Comments

This is an any% run of Bomberman 64. I chose the Japanese version because of the shorter intro. I think both any% and 100% TASes should exist.
There are some known improvements, like the early bomb jump in the 1st fire stage; better luck for the fish boss; maybe getting bomb power-ups in first ice stage?

Tricks used in this run

Please see this page for most of the tricks.

Special thanks

  • zvsp: he encouraged me and gave me feedback throughout the run. He also provided the nicovideo encode.
  • Saba: I used his testrun for comparison. He found most of the tricks used in this run.
  • Mifumi: he found the bridge skip in 5-1.
  • Kaedenn: thanks to Kaedenn for his interest in the TAS!

Dooty: The run is so good I wish I played it! Accepting for publication.

Those stages at the end were awesome. Yes from me. I can't wait for a 100% run.

Wow, the trick starting at 21:30 in the encode is amazing (and I recommend around 21:36 in the encode for the screenshot, as a result, unless people think it spoils too much; the exact timing doesn't matter).

I agree. Also, was this trick done to skip a boss battle? That's what it looks like, but I can't be sure. Anyway, well optimized and entertaining run. Congratulations on finishing another great N64 TAS, Nahoc! Yes vote.

Easy yes vote. 100% TAS will be even more fun to watch, if it ever happens. Well done.

Shouldnt the game version always be English unless there is some time saving bug specific to the Japanese version?
This signature is much better than its previous version.

Nope, there is no longer any preference for the english version.

Besides what rog points out, the precedent really only ruled out runs where the only difference was faster text. Doesn't have to be a bug; for example, the Japanese version of FFX-2 lets you get an item early on that one-shots all bosses, and this item was moved to the end of the game in the US release. Not a bug, still legitimate. Doesn't matter any more, though.

You're welcome. :P Anyway, this was another great run from a fantastic TASer. Great job, Nahoc, I loved it and voted yes. Even with Ocarina of Time and my super amazing kayaking TAS, I don't think I have a chance in hell of beating you for N64 TASer of the year. :)

I have no idea why, but I really love that game. It must be some blind nostalgia. And as such, I really enjoyed this run! Some very clever tricks, especially the boss battle skipping in the last world and the giant jumps made possible with bouncing bombs. Also, the boss battles with the bad guys had me in stitches. They take longer to introduce themselves than to be defeated. Reminds me of how you defeat King Bob-Bomb in Mario 64, except I didn't even know you could defeat those boss that way. As an aside, I didn't even know the characters had different voices in the Japanese version. I find those more cute, personally! Anyway, that's an easy yes vote (even if I can't vote), excellent work!

Nice work. Some techniques and new routes you found were great, they will also be very useful for 100%run. I have something to say, TASes of Bomberman64 are built on the efforts of great Japanese players (except me). For example, jumping through 5-1 boss was shown by Mifumi, and bridge-like jumping was improved by Saba. I think you should mention their facts if nothing else.

There aren't any bosses outside boss stages. You are required to activate a series of switches to reach the platform normally. Even with the ability to climb onto the walls, it will still take quite a bit of time. The only other way is of course hopping across the gap somehow to skip the entire puzzle.

This game seems to have a very slow pace, so I'll give it another try once I stop being in sleep-deprived mode.

Every bomb jump was a thing of beauty. The very last bomb jump in the run was on a whole other level though, oh my god lol. Great job Nahoc.

I love it, can't wait to see what an attempt at the 100% category hinted at in the submission text would look like

First TAS I've watched in a while, because I was never able to beat the game as a kid, and it did not disappoint. Some of the bomb jump combos just looked entirely impossible. Thanks for this :)

This was quite nice! The bomb staircase tricks definitely loo very crafty. The run felt slowest in the ice levels, but there was a fairly good pace and good density of tricks. 5-1 was definitely the highlight. Yes vote. Also, thanks to zsvp for a very nice nicovideo encode!
Used to be a frequent submissions commenter. My new computer has had some issues running emulators, so I've been here more sporadically. Still haven't gotten around to actually TASing yet... I was going to improve Kid Dracula for GB. It seems I was beaten to it, though, with a recent awesome run by Hetfield90 and StarvinStruthers. (http://tasvideos.org/2928M.html.) Thanks to goofydylan8 for running Gargoyle's Quest 2 because I mentioned the game! (http://tasvideos.org/2001M.html) Thanks to feos and MESHUGGAH for taking up runs of Duck Tales 2 because of my old signature! Thanks also to Samsara for finishing a Treasure Master run. Crazy bombjumping @ 5-3 (around 21:30 in the encode), this one totally surprised me. Voted yes :) I should note that the YT encode states 23:39.55 as the final time. Shall it be corrected ?
