Pro Wrestling is a game where you must fight your way to the top winning sixteen battles before finally "A WINNER IS YOU" and you are crowned V.W.A. V.W.F. Champion! In this case Fighter Hayabusa realizes the only winning move is not to play and decides to wander around outside the ring to win without pinning a single opponent.

Game objectives

  • Emulator used: fceux 2.1.5 with TASEdit (which is why there was 0 re-records)
  • Aims for fastest time
  • Takes damage for entertainment

I was recently looking through some of the games I had experimented when I first started TASing and remembered that I had finished a full run of this game but never submitted. I re-watched it and figured there may or may not be an audience for this game so I decided to submit. One positive that can be said for this is that yet another run from the SDA list can be eliminated.

Gameplay

In the game there are a few ways to win a fight. The first, and obvious, way is to pin your opponent. The other way to win a fight is to have your opponent be out of the ring when the 20 second timer finishes counting down.
In the SDA run shown here the runner used the strategy of roaming outside of the ring as it appeared to be quicker and there would be more room for error as you do not need to get the exact frame required to enact some of the moves in the game. As shown he gets an in-game time of 6 minutes which is almost exactly 10 minutes and 0 seconds under TAS Video timing.
I then began testing out and seeing if possibly a traditional fight run could be faster than the out of ring strategy. In the game there are quite a few attack options that deal varying amounts of damage to the opponent. With that the stronger attacks will only work if you have already inflicted damage to the opponent until his HP hit a certain number. From these calculations I found the ideal fighting pattern and did a run using that strategy. It resulted that the fastest I could get it was around 80 frames or 1.33 seconds slower per round than the out of bounds ending.
The result is this run. I end with an in-game time of 5:52 which is the absolute minimum possible in-game length possible and an 8 second improvement over the SDA run. I also have an real time of 9 minutes 46.75 seconds so a roughly 13 second improvement in real time.
I tried to make the fights entertaining by varying movements and fighting style out of the ring so that it wasn't just standing still for almost ten minutes. I tried to make each level have a slightly different strategy for the movements while wandering the outside of the ring so hopefully it is not too repetitive. As a side note after pinning your opponent there is an amount of time where you cannot attack or even move which explains a large amount of time where my character is stationary.
Brandon made the final fight shorter by cutting the input off as soon as possible while making sure his opponent couldn't get back in the ring. That's where the 214 re-records came from.

Other comments

I recognize that this is not the most interesting strategy on earth but it is the fastest. I just like the idea of submitting the fastest possible version even if its chances of success are minimal.
Here is the WIP of the pinning strategy. Each battle under this category would follow this exact order of moves so that run would be slower than this version and actually less entertaining as the movements would be exactly the same between battles.

DarkKobold: You did everything you could, but the fastest strategy of ring-out just gets extremely repetitive. While I applaud your quest to have a TAS for every NES game (all 700+), most remaining just aren't publishable material. Rejecting for poor audience response to the game choice.

I think you mean in-game time of 5:52. It's not a very interesting TAS, but it's as interesting as it can be really. The reason I did a real-time speedrun of it was because it was interesting to me how you could really exploit this game. I've always thought that there should be runs on TASes of popular/well known games, even if they aren't the most entertaining runs ever. It's always interesting to me to see the absolute limits for games I've played. Voting yes. EDIT: A no ring-out run could be interesting. I'm guessing that would involve a lot of repetition as well though.

That I did, it has been fixed to 5:52. I have literally never had a submission text that did not contain an obvious error. Thanks for letting me know. Thanks for your yes vote. I'm considering doing a no ring-out run just to see, though I am fairly confident it will be the same order of moves as they have a distinct difference in strength so it is clear what the order needs to be. I may or may not, probably would not, submit it but at least it would exist somewhere.

TAS i'm interested: Megaman series, specially the RPGs! Where is the mmbn1 all chips TAS we deserve? Where is the Command Mission TAS? i'm slowly moving away from TASing fighting games for speed, maybe it's time to start finding some entertainment value in TASing.

That sounds pretty dumb to me. The entertaining value is just the same from people who have played it or not... although people who had played it might actually value it a bit more but still that's not important when judging if it's publishable material.

Then a lot of submissions on the Workbench wouldn't be getting as many votes (which is bad, because runs of unpopular submissions sit on the Workbench for weeks as it is). It doesn't matter if the voter has played the game or not; what matters is if they find the movie entertaining or not, and people who haven't played a game can still find a TAS entertaining. I've played only a small number of the games that turn up in the Workbench, but I try to watch all of them anyway and I usually find them entertaining.

You do realize "those" people are pretty much everyone? This is a terrible precedent to set. Half of my favourite TASes are games I haven't played. I think it's really horrible that someone would tell people they don't have "the right" to watch something because they didn't happen to play every obscure NES game that's ever come out. It's like saying nobody has the right to watch a new movie in theatres until they read the book it was based on. What you're asking of people is ridiculous. Think about what you say before you post. Really.

I had never played this game before making the TAS. I encourage everyone who watches it and has an opinion to vote and voice their opinion. As you can see this run only has 4 votes so far 1 person comment on the quality of the TAS. If anything I would encourage more people to vote and voice opinion on the run. Even though it would sort of be disappointing if 100 people voted no, I would feel better about this run than a 75% yes at 4 votes because that is at least feedback. Though, I do believe this should be addressed by the Admins/Mods and an official rule should be placed on the voting page. Currently it does not address the former knowledge of the game issue which has been raised before and it would be better if an official ruling could be down.

Thanks for the encode, Patryk. I have to say this got pretty repetitive. You did your best to vary things up and there were a few amusing bits, but on the whole it wasn't all that interesting. Voting meh for game choice.

I really appreciated that you tried to vary the moves outside the ring, but unfortunately they weren't interesting enough to keep it enjoyable for me. I found myself eagerly looking forward to the end of the TAS cause I knew each new round consisted of the same thing: Throws opponent / is thrown out of the ring, beats up / is beaten up outside of the ring, hops in the ring at the 22 second mark of the match. Technically I think it's sound and you did a good job, so I can't vote no, but entertainment-wise, it's just too repetitive, so I can't vote yes. Thus, I split the difference and voted 'meh'.

I don't think this one is a good game choice for a TAS, at least from the bits I've seen. There have been bad game choices that have been published, but they were much shorter and had something interesting to offer to the public. I'll have to vote "no" on this one.

I did not enjoy watching this movie. The fights were not interesting, and quite repetitive. So I must vote no. However, A+ on the submission text, very well written and good thorough documentation (without being overly long) on the concepts presented in this TAS.

Rough real-time improvement of 39 frames. Only final fight is modified. I'd improve it stylistic wise and resubmit it, but I doubt that you'd consider this enough work to warrant a co-authorship. Then again, this game's publishability is questionable to begin with. In the end, the important thing is I've proven that you make mistakes, and perhaps this is enough to slow down your NES reign of terror! >_<

I liked the game choice and the run overall, but one thing bugged me: couldn't you send the opponent running across the entire screen at least once? Also, couldn't you get back on the ring as soon as possible and go deep back in the ring as a show off move on one of the rounds? It seems that you used the "get in the ring as late as possible" way too many times, but I'd like to see the opposite. Getting in the ring as early as possible is probably what Brandon did on his fmv :)

Hell, if you wanted to adjust a couple things and resubmit I am all for it. As you said the chances of this being published is looking slim so maybe the thrill of a new submission with possible co-authorship would make people vote yes instead. NES TASES 4 LIFE! (or until a different emulator has an input method comparable to at very least fceux 2.1.5's TASEdit)

Thanks for the feedback. You can't throw the opponent running across the entire screen because they break out of running and then are right next to the ring and can get in before me. Getting back in the ring as soon as possible isn't possible because at around 10 seconds the opponents logic switches from fighting to do the minimum attacks possible to get back in the ring. So the earliest I would be able to get in the ring, to my knowledge, is the round where I get in and run into the ropes and barely bounce off. It is exactly what he did (though you will notice the earliest he could get in was 39 frames earlier so I wouldn't have much room for entertainment in the ring).

A couple things in that level or would you like me to do stuff elsewhere? I can't imagine there are improvements in other levels. I could just try to redo the last level for style and match / beat the time if that's what you'd like, sure.
