bkDJ, Actually, I was talking about the messages that appear when you get the 1st, 3rd, 8th, 30th, 50th and 70th stars. I know that getting the 70th star out of a level (from Toad) does trigger the message about the staircase. What happens if I have 7 stars, get the 100 coin star and any other star in the same level, which puts me at 9 stars. Do I get a message after I leave the level? Can I get two stars at once to skip any of the messages about the castle?
You'll get the message after collecting the 100 coins star, IIRC. If you use a trick like this, you'll skip the message, but still get it on the next star you collect.
:U Is it possible to do this glitch in other stages?
Yes; TTC, TTM, WF...

Like I said, the castle messages appear after you've decided whether to save or not, regardless if it is a normal star, a castle star, a 100-coin star, or a bowser red coin star. If the game doesn't ask you to save, the message won't appear. But it will appear the next time the game asks you to save, including for in-level stars! I think there's also a message for star 120 so if the death star glitch can be done for that one in a way that wastes less time than the combined time of {landing, giving the peace V sign, zooming out, coin counting and mustache brushing, and saying don't save} then that would be a neat way to save time in the 120 star run. But that won't happen because the 120th star pretty much has to be BitS red coins. Also if you can do it 2 times in a row for the first 2 collected stars, you can skip the 1-star message. Oherwise, the death star glitch is a neat trick that might save time, but it won't save you from castle messages except what I wrote above. EDIT: yeah CoolKirby, it's the V sign, but since they are both the same gesture with a meaning that depends on context, and Mario is probably using it because that's what Japanese people do when posing, in part thanks to peace activism... or maybe just declaring victory... whatever :P

Those are interesting videos. I didn't even know a star collected while dying would count.

I thought it was a V for "victory" sign.

One of the rare times I will chime in on a hack... for the positive... but throw my hat in for a 130 star Super Mario Star Road run. After watching an 8 hour playthrough, I am sufficiently impressed and feel it is not only a worthy hack, but one I'd like to see one day on this site. Mr. Kelly R. Flewin

Dear Mr. Flewin, I see you inquireth about a hack. No one has ever tas'd a hack before, with the exception of this. It got rejected for bad game choice. So i suggest we be careful with our TAS's. Ah, who the hell am I kidding? GO FOR IT, SONICPAKER! Signed, Mr. NAME WITHHELD

Have you even played Super Mario Star Road? It's a very well made hack, and way better than Super Mario 74 (not that 74 wasn't fun). There's no way an any% or 100% run of Star Road would get rejected for bad game choice.

I doubt an any% of Star Road would be accepted here. It would be even shorter than the regular SM64 0 Star (second key is skipped), and would provide essentially the same visual content (yes, the first boss would be different, but that's about it): BLJ ---> short level ---> boss ---> repeat

The thing is, my stance on hacks is pretty well known. It takes something impressive to actually make me go along with it, because there's shitloads of awful hacks constantly released. This is one of the first hacks I've seen of SM64 that wasn't shit. You should definitely give this a shot or look up videos on YouTube [There is a long play up there that shows how painfully difficult some parts are and how deliciously delightful some of the levels are] Mr. Kelly R. not really.
Then don't try to speak for its quality. All of the single star runs of Star Road have been met with very positive feedback, and lots of TASers are anxiously anticipating the 100% run. Since their votes and comments are what gets it published, I think that shows what a great "game choice" it is.
