(flowplayer module removed)
Bomberman 64 is the first 3-D game within the Bomberman series. It also implements a different single-player mode by incorporating action-adventure and platforming stages, instead of arenas in which enemies or other elements must be destroyed. The game has spawned two sequels on the N64: Bomberman Hero and Bomberman 64: The Second Attack.

Game objectives

  • Emulator used: Mupen64 0.5 re-recording v8 reset v2
  • Aims for fastest time
  • Manipulates luck
  • Plays on hardest difficulty
  • Uses a game restart sequence
  • Genre: Platformer

Comments

This is an any% run of Bomberman 64. I chose the Japanese version because of the shorter intro. I think both any% and 100% TASes should exist.
There are some known improvements, like the early bomb jump in the 1st fire stage; better luck for the fish boss; maybe getting bomb power-ups in first ice stage?

Tricks used in this run

Please see this page for most of the tricks.

Special thanks

  • zvsp: he encouraged me and gave me feedback throughout the run. He also provided the nicovideo encode.
  • Saba: I used his testrun for comparison. He found most of the tricks used in this run.
  • Mifumi: he found the bridge skip in 5-1.
  • Kaedenn: thanks to Kaedenn for his interest in the TAS!

What can I say, this run was very well-done and the puzzle solutions/bypasses were ingenious. Seeing this game, which holds many fond memories and frustrations both for me, defeated so soundly and swiftly, is impressive to me (I always had a hard time finding my way around and solving the puzzles when this game first came out; I only wish I knew then what I know about this game now). I very much look forward to a 100% run, which I'm sure will be done at some point. I have got to see all the gold cards collected in the Rainbow Palace, as well as how a TAS will approach beating the minibosses in a more proper manner when it actually needs their gold cards. If I could vote, I'd absolutely say Yes, which would be made even easier by the fact that there is no Bomberman 64 video on the site previously.
1/60 of a second is important; every frame matters.

I think I rented this game once when I was a young kid and didn't understand it in the slightest. This run makes me want to try playing it again someday. Yes vote, and keep up the awesome n64 TASes!

Love that end boss. First form, bounces off bomb, bounces off bomb bomberman is carrying, bounces off bomb bomberman is carrying while jumping, off the edge. After the power-up cutscene, kicked, picked up, and off the edge.

The only thing that's slightly annoying is Bomberman's slow walking speed. Great game, great run. 100% would be nice.

I think Nahoc is working on an improvement? shouldn’t this be cancelled?

No. The encodes are nearly ready and my improvement won't be done any time soon.

I finally took my time to watch this fully. This is really different enough from a 100% and surprised me on many parts. Very fun and entertaining. Also, there's graphical issues everywhere. From every boss battle, to the credits and some other places.

The 10-bit encode seems to have broken about halfway through, it's much smaller than the other encode and won't play past 17:33.

The movie desyncs for me. Every time i try to watch it it shows the long intro, unlike the youtube video where it skips it. I use the exact same plugins and the same Japanese rom ofc (it has the same code). Any ideas?

Try deleting the Bomberman 64 save file (.eep) from Mupen's save folder before playing back.
