The Recommended list is about to be untied off the Stars list, to allow stars tier be actually a tier for all best runs (now it's selective). Staff discussion dwelled on a list of 10 (probably 15) movies of widely famous games that blow up the newcomer's brain, namely by playing the game the most impossible way. Example: SM64 "0 stars" SM "Reverse Boss Order" Mega Man 2 (the first game run just breaks it all apart, while this one still shows the intended route, even raping it hard). Share your feelings you experienced with such mind-escaping runs. All your suggestions are going to be taken in a final poll, just please post honestly ;) REASON: We want to SEPARATE current Stars which are now equal to Newbie-Rec, into 10-15 Newbie-Rec and a solid list of starred movies to represent the highest tier. And I want to use people's feelings about the most impressive runs during years here. For me, what I mentioned were probably the first tases I saw, and still nothing overpowered that impression, and still both runs are alive and well. This is NOT about lowering the stars standsard! It's about picking all movies that meet it, not dropping out-of-quota tases. ALSO: suggest the newbie-recommended icon here, since I think stars must keep their meaning of the highest tier.
Warning: When making decisions, I try to collect as much data as possible before actually deciding. I try to abstract away and see the principles behind real world events and people's opinions. I try to generalize them and turn into something clear and reusable. I hate depending on unpredictable and having to make lottery guesses. Any problem can be solved by systems thinking and acting.

I do think this question should be answered (not by me) before this recommended flag is considered seriously for a feature.

The run that blew my mind? Too damn many. - Super Metroid in general. I was amazed by how precise and perfect the movements were compared to regular speedruns. And the rest is history. - Super Mario Kart by cstrakm. To this day an amazing run for me. - Cave Story by nitsuja is a modern example, simply because of how amazing the game is for a TAS. I'll add more as I remember them.

Back when I first started checking out TASes, I think it was the Mega Man and Mortal Kombat runs that I enjoyed the most. Also the runs of the classic NES Mario games.

To clarify, the intent of this thread was to gauge what the FIRST TASes people remember blowing their minds. The goal was to get an idea of amazing TASes from a newcomer perspective rather than from experienced community members. For me (back in the stone age of 2004) it was Genisto's Super Mario Bros 2 (U) run. It was one of the first TASes I ever watched because I was very much interested in that game, and it blew my mind because it far exceeded my expectations of what would be possible in this game.

Oh! Then, spezzafer's SM64 "16 Stars" and morimoto's SMB3. Like many people, I first thought those were played on console. I couldn't believe how many hours someone could have played to reach such a level of playing.

The obsoleted Pokémon Blue run. One of the first TASes I watched, and the first time I had seen the game in years. It also went from totally normal to totally glitchy as the run went on, and the glitches (like cycling over buildings and across water) blew my mind. It did seem like it took a while to get entertaining, but that could have been because I was really really tired.

Dragon Warrior. It was the first TAS I ever watched, because a friend had shown it to me. It sent me the message "THIS is what luck manipulation means!" and blew my mind, and then I was hooked on TASes for good. Gradius, for being so damn artful. It was the first TAS I watched of a game that I never played. Zelda II and Zelda: Link's Awakening, for introducing me to the concept of "Glitched" runs. I couldn't stop laughing for days after I saw them. Although I will admit, nowadays Mega Man 1 is probably the funniest glitched run on this site, in my opinion. Yoshi's Island. Brilliant shortcuts and incredible egg bouncing physics! To this day, it remains my favorite TAS.

Well, in that case it was morimoto's legendary SMB3, in that old bad encode.

Super Metroid. The first time I saw it I was awed by every trick, bug and exploit that was made during the whole run.

Super Mario 64 *120 is the one I gave my first "I saw it and I still don't believe it" award to. But that would have been quite some years ago now. Other award winners:
  • Mega Man 2
  • Mega Man 1
Wow, that's actually kinda telling about me.

Haha, it was adelikat's suggestion, but times change and tases that were people's FIRST shock can become too old and obsoleted, so I asked about total time you're here. Probably after joining the comunity something overpowered the FIRST experience. EDIT: about the star tier: I noticed that guidelines aim to keep the featured list minimal, and suggest different tricks for EXCLUDING as many runs as possible. For example, if all games from one franchise were tased insanely hard, only one of them will be starred. And what about the rest? Do they need to rot among those 6-7 rated runs unnoticed? The meaning of stars were to highlight Recommended movies, but the list of BEST runs is way longer. So, making a VERY SHORT newbie-rec list we can fill the highest tier fairly. If the length of a tier is limited by some arbitrary quota, it's not a tier anymore (an untier?) Edit 2: Mine was blown by Darkwing uck and Warpless Battletoads by foda.

so like, a historical tier? museum tier? good ol' days tier? when adelikat was your age tier? is the idea here t make a list of non modern runs to show new people that games can be broken while still actually leaving some game in the game as opposed to some of the more modern "in which I demonstrate my knowledge of computer logic" runs that simply look like a hacked or corrupted version of the game?[/i]

The first one that really got me was that "glitchfest" playaround of SMAS SMB3. It was constantly doing unexpected, creative stuff and kept it up for a solid hour. Runners up would probably be the SM RBO runs (which accomplish kind of the same thing) and the first Chrono Trigger with subframe reset (which was a small miracle considering how many bugs had to be used to win or escape every mandatory battle).

It's difficult to choose "the first TAS that blew your mind" when you have followed the site from the very beginning. After all, the whole site was inspired by Morimoto's SMB3 run (which, to be honest, didn't "blow my mind" although was interesting) and Bisqwit's first attempts at an SMB run with Famtasia (using slowdown and savestates; no frame advance back then.) Perhaps the TASes that I remember most fondly from the beginning of history, mostly for nostalgic reasons, are the Solstice and Solomon's Key, as well as the different SMB runs (especially SMB2). However, that's probably not what's intended with the question in this thread.

The very first one, really: Morimoto's SMB3 run. I guess aside from that one, NES Mega Man (JPN) in 16:57.93 by Bisqwit was a big milestone in my mind.

Hero of the Day's Super Metroid "real time" in 39:32.8 and Cpadolf's Super Metroid "in-game time" in 41:02.4 were what brought me here, and Super Metroid in general is probably what got me to stay here too. That game and the TASes for it never fail to blow my mind with what they bring with each new submission.

I know what the first TAS I saw was, and it wasn't even one that belonged to the site. It was a demonstration, using Item Abuse, of most of the glitches that were known in Super Mario World at the time. Although I'm only mildly interested in kaizohacks, it was great seeing the internals of the game exposed in such a way. My favourite TAS is Space Invaders Extreme 2, which I've watched 12 times so far. You can't get much more entertaining than that.

SM64 "0" stars run that improved the previous by like 30 seconds Runs which destroys gameplay.
