Thanks for another Win game we can use keylie! Didn't have too many yet. Also thanks for Spikestuff for a better Bishi Bashi clip... Yeah I didn't know how to categorize that one and it didn't look so special actually. Yeah I see that the other one is better. Patashu: That's fine, I'm sure we'll find a perfect way to use 8-bit stuff somewhere. I think it must be possible to somehow convert .nsf to .mid which would be all we need. Here's a thread I found about it if you're interested in trying it out. http://ocremix.org/forums/showthread.php?t=11998 However, I've currently got two-ish alternative drafts for the storyboard. I'm going to talk to Bisquit at some point now. Turns out we live in the same town... He might be giving a little interview to make the video a bit more homey... So anyway, you will all get to see the two drafts unless I decide one of them is decidedly better. Patashu, I will give you plenty of time for anything I'll ask you to do when I've figured out what exactly is called for.

Hey, I guess there's no GC TASes in this new advertisement video... I'd want to request my new Sonic Adventure DX TAS for it!

Find a specific moment in the TAS, a short segment that's easy to understand for both people who have played the game and those who haven't, which shows off one of the qualities TASes are famous for, and post a link to that specific moment in the official youtube video, then explain why you think said moment should be included. Svimmer is not going to, nor would I expect him to, scan through every TAS suggested to find a 5 - 10 second segment that's useful for the video. EDIT: By the way, Svimmer, have you managed to get into contact with Bisqwit yet? Also, have you considered Google Docs for your spreadsheet. That way we can see what sort of progress you're making in relative real time. You can set it up so that everyone with the link can view the doc, but only you can edit it.

THC98: We have a couple GC clips but feel free to do what arki says. The procedure of suggesting a clip is now edited into the first post as it should have been long ago. arkiardruski: Yes, Bisqwit has replied to me. Google Docs was an excellent idea! It's up now and the link is here and in the starter post. GO CHECK IT OUT PEOPLE! I will take one last glance at my first drafts tomorrow or so and then make them available on Google Docs as well.

Oh okay. So I want to suggest the 2nd section of Lost World in my TAS, also known as mirror room. It can be found here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I-L3JuCA6-k&t=25m56s (up to ~26:13) This clip shows a huge superhuman precision to get really fast spindashes and to get a wallrun to skip two doors in the entrance of the mirror room. Inside there, I continued spindashing from one platform to another one, getting an insane speed there. In the last platform, I do another spindash towards a false wall to skip the waterfall part. After this skip, I landed on a ground and continued spindashing up to a door, that I skipped doing a really fast jump to get pushed out of bounds. After it, I just started running away the boulder (which is where the clip should end) Also, if you think that this clip is too long, it can end after the spindash to skip the waterfall (~26:06)

THC98: The clip has been added to the table. It looks nice for sure! The Drafts that I currently have to offer (incomplete) are up on Google Docs (see the first post for links)! Could I ask people to take a look and mainly answer the question: "Should Tool-Assisted" or "Speedrunning" be introduced first? Because you can't understand TASing if you don't understand both of those. You'll see in the drafts what sort of narrative might result. There is also a comparison file for quick reference for those who have a limited amount of time. I haven't asked anyone other than Bisquit for interviews but I'm sure something along the lines of what draft 2 proposes could be arranged in case you were wondering.

Read the drafts. These feel more like documentary scripts than site advertisements. I would be interested in seeing how a documentary would turn out and a documentary could serve to up interest as well, but would like to see an ad made too. I think you should try using fewer words to get your point across and rely a lot more on the clips to show what is amazing about these videos. I'll try to make another example when I'm not typing on a phone.

Agreed. The draft are documentaries rather than advertisements. Also agreed on course of action - use some text like "impossible manurers", "superhuman reflexes," etc. Don't drag in history or explain the history of TAS, speedrunning or communities. Use games to show off TAS work. If people are interested, they will seek to know more and that is where you can show history, how TASes are made, etc.

Looks like you really did a lot of hard work already Svimmer, I wish you success to pull this thing out. I know it's a so late now, and I don't know if it's already mentioned, but I still think it would be better to make a compilation of the previous yearly Wiki: Awards first, or at least just one try so you will get more ideas and will be more sure you don't forget anything you need for this tremendous project. These awards has something around 14~21 movies per years, so it wouldn't take away too much time. edit: whoops, submit instead preview edit2: and some random ideas: a full TAS during the credits (we have a lot of sub 30 sec TASes) and subtitles encoded for various TASes

Actually, a documentary movie would be more useful than just another ad (granted that it's a well done documentary).

Looking at the info of Karaoke (Time Stamp is wrong btw, it's 10:21 not 6:60) "Visual Impact - 3" *looks at 3* "Could be done real time?" *laughs* Hell No. If there was a 60fps version of it, it would be more clear... I should've explained this (I touched on it but didn't fully explain it). Karaoke is a tas-only thing, it's so bloody pixel perfect especially for 2 player. This is Full Score, mz didn't even achieve that in his 1 player TAS. Most Re-records came from that level trying to get both players the highest score. The movement at 10:55 and 10:59 (especially 10:59) Player 2 was able to get the note more times than Player 1 during this stage. The movement between the two needs to be precise between the two to get the high score. Which means it cannot be done in real time Edit: Downloadables of the singing stage 60fps 1920p (2560x1920). Because YouTube version is balls. MP4 (41.1MB), MKV (41.8MB)

So I've been ill the whole week and I don't know if I can trust myself to make smart decisions right now. Just to quickly respond to recent comments... So the last promo video was made maybe 4 years ago. If someone wants to make another fast-paced thing like that feel free to script it. But I'm not going to. I see no point, there's been 3 of them already and I know there's people who like to think progressively and actually think trying something new is okay. I swear it wasn't my idea to make it explain things along the way. Apparently AnS at least agrees.

10-year-olds is not the only possible target audience. I think there's people out there who can sit through 30-45 minutes... and actually find even such things interesting that aren't rapid-fire awesomeness. arki: I'm trying to be concise but informative. You can call it a documentary, then. That's not a bad term. Also you should wait for a more finished draft with most comments. I have a vision that I'm sure people will be most pleased with. Meshuggah: This project will take a while to finish anyway so it doesn't matter if someone makes a shortie like that in the meanwhile, but please create another thread for it then. + your second edit gave me a couple of new ideas for this... I think we'll mention what the shortest and longest current TASes are, surely that's going to be interesting. We'll see how it turns out, there's going to be either/or/both a voice-over or annotations for sure. Spikestuff: It's 660 seconds, not 6:60... We won't have the whole karaoke. Also I have mentioned (in the new first post you were supposed to read) that you're not supposed to take the rating system seriously. I struggled to come up with it in the first place and because I never found anything satisfying to use as the description for each score, I wanted to stress that it's not important. Besides, visual impact means how it looks to someone who doesn't know the game, not to someone who does. It isn't immediately clear how precise the inputs needed to be. ---- So does anyone have an opinion on which draft seems smarter? Explaining "Tool-Assisted" first or explaining "Speedrunning" first. I will wait some more until I feel a bit better so I can think straight and then make the decision by myself if I need to, but just don't tell me I'm not listening to people's opinions here. BTW I met with Nesquick Bisqwit today and learned some interesting things about the history of emulators and TASing. He's also going to give some kind of interview, which I feel is going to be great for the pacing and overall atmosphere of the video.

How about a clip where a section is rewinded and "rerecorded" to be more and more insane? Surely there is some game with a long history where this could be taken from. Also, I'd like to nominate any of the times when a Megaman boss is beaten faster than the healthbar can keep up. I mean one of those Zero battles in the PSX games. And of course, any time when a a pokemon move is "not very effective" and still one hits the opponent.

If you make it into a documentary, then I have no objections ^_^ But it will be no ad. An ad can't be 30-45 minutes long.

I'm also fine with a documentary, but it will require a lot more research than I originally thought, and a lot more clips. Maybe some longer clips would be useful as well. I also suggest getting hold of adelikat for an interview as well. In addition to having many top quality TASes featured on the site, he's also the current owner. EDIT: I prefer the first draft, though I think there should be a small introduction explaining the state of mind that goes into TASing. Something like explaining the appeal of video games and then saying there are many ways to enjoy games. You can play them exactly as intended and you will get a great experience. However, there are some people who like to get on the inside of games, to test their limits, and to see how far the game can bend. The reason I picked the first draft is not every run on the site is dedicated entirely to speedrunning. There's been two camps of philosophy on the site for almost the entire time it's been around, basically speed first or entertainment first.

Ok. So I'm trying to recover from a week of sleeplessness and get back on this and other things soon. arki: Yes you're right, thanks for the input. Not all TASes are speedruns, ironically, even though S stands for Speedrun... So that would speak in favor of going "Tool-Assisted" first. I'll add something to the script about the different ways of approaching games if I can think of a way to fit that in. But yeah seeing as you're the only one who seemed to have an opinion, I will most probably go with draft 1 then. henke: read the first post please. you have to find the videos yourself. From this point on I'll be progressively less interested in random suggestions and more interested in whatever is listed under "Wanted" in the first post just because as the script keeps gaining shape, I'll know with greater precision what it can actually feature and benefit from.

I think the S is superplay and not speedrun. Superplaying a game often ends up beating the game in the fastest way possible, but somtimes, it is not. Also, I wish you a speedy recovery!

That's a backronym, really.

It was originally Speedruns, but it was changed to Superplays once more playarounds started making it through.

It depends on who you ask. It was originally speedruns, and most people still call them speedruns. Some people backronymed it to "superplays" because a few TASes don't aim for maximum speed. Whatever floats your boat, but I don't think this terminology thing needs to be muddled any more than it already is, especially since "tool-assisted speedrun" has received more public consciousness and acceptance, and the days of "it's fake/cheating" are mostly in the past. I don't think we need a "speedrun/superplay" terminology war.

I think I've solved the acronym issue... It stands for "speedrun" if it's a speedrun and "superplay" if it's a superplay. :) I've started a third draft that's moving along kinda slowly but we'll get there. The link will be in the first post in a moment if you want to follow its progress.

I know I'm a first-time poster here but I've lurked for about a year. I've watched most of the star movies, and many others (basically movies of games I've played or movies with high ratings), and I've browsed the forums a bit too. I think that this documentary idea is much more interesting than previous site adverts, which are basically just clip shows. They look cool, and the music is awesome, but I feel like they don't really explain to the viewer what he is watching. Doing something like this probably raises awareness more, even if it is ultimately less entertaining. The draft at the moment is looking great, and I feel that interviews are a cool idea, particularly the andrewg interview as I think it would help emphasise that RTSes and TASes shouldn't be compared directly (a common misconception which leads many people to consider TASes "cheating"), but that people can do both, and information can be shared between the communities. If you're looking for a movie that you could use to explain speedrunning/TASing tricks, could I suggest ckstram's Super Mario Kart? I feel this is a good showcase of several basic tricks while not being impossible to follow. In particular: - It's a familiar game, and it's easy to understand what is going on even if you haven't played it. - The designers' intended paths are very obvious, and it is very obvious that the TAS doesn't use them. - It is clear that the movie is exploiting the game's very loose definition of a lap. - Death abuse is frequent. Moreover, it is TAS-only abuse and it is fairly easy to understand how it saves time, even if you're not familiar with the game. - Luck manipulation is also present in the form of picking up nothing but mushrooms from the random item boxes, and in avoiding enemy weapons. Anyone who has played any Mario Kart game would know how unlikely this would be unassisted.
