I met Kurt Angle at a TNA house show a few years back in my home town. I got to shake his hand and take a picture with him in the middle of the ring after the show.
The dude was polite, but had the most intense demeanor I've ever seen.

I ran into Mstislav Leopoldovich Rostropovich in Saint Petersburg in 2002 (or was it 2003?), but I had no idea who it was at the time. The Russians I was with seemed overwhelmed, though. He knew the Swedish word for Cheers.
I have been the chauffeur and interpreter for Merla & Merv Watson during their visit in Finland. Merla & Merv are the couple who began and founded the International Christian Embassy in Jerusalem (ICEJ), which among other things is responsible for gathering thousands of people yearly from the nations to celebrate the Feast of Tabernacles in Jerusalem, Israel.
I have also been in a similar role to Edward Chumney, the founder of Hebraic Heritage Ministries International, author of the book "The Seven Festivals of the Messiah", a hebraic roots of Christianity teacher who has been the primary mentor to many of the world's most renowned restoration teachers today, such as Brad Scott, Bill Cloud, and Rico Cortes.
They are very well known to their respective circles. For example, within those christians in Finland who regularly go to a church/congregation, there is probably no one who does not know about ICEJ.
Who gets to decide which circles are relevant and which are not? For the record, the only names that I recognized from what everyone said so far in this thread, were Uri Geller and Children of Bodom, and I know of the movie Back to the Future. The cellist that Truncated mentioned is pretty much unknown to anyone who is not a classical music enthusiasist.

I think the problem is that you used this opportunity to preach your religion (with lots of links and all), which is kind of uncalled for.
It would have been quite the same as if someone had taken the opportunity to promote, let's say, homeopathy by telling how he met a "famous" homeopath (who is known only in some homeopathy circles), or doing the same to promote scientology, ufology, or anything like that.
This is neither what is generally meant by "famous people", nor is it in any way on-topic to preach some world view or ideology.
I think the problem is that you used this opportunity to preach your religion (with lots of links and all), which is kind of uncalled for.
I wouldn't have anything against it e.g. Truncated annotated his posts with a few relevant references that help explain who that person is and what he is known for. Not even if he went beyond his way to link to a few performances in which that person was in that he is passionate about. Nor would I have objected if someone referred to some top-of-class homepathy or ufology guru they had met. After all, Uri Geller was already mentioned too.
Nowhere in my post did I preach about anything, urging anyone to take any stance towards one or other way. The links that I did give were there for the purpose of establishing notability.
But I see. Some topics are prejudiced against and that is totally fine.
It most likely means "famous compared to ourselves" :D
Warning: When making decisions, I try to collect as much data as possible before actually deciding. I try to abstract away and see the principles behind real world events and people's opinions. I try to generalize them and turn into something clear and reusable. I hate depending on unpredictable and having to make lottery guesses. Any problem can be solved by systems thinking and acting.
Mikhail Gorbachev and Donald Knuth here. The former was a big disappointment, as i was always curious to listen to a beautiful language of a professional accomplished politician, but instead got to hear a boring uninspired lecture full of words and void of any information. Knuth was nice to see, but sadly i had only managed to get few glances at him and had to leave soon after.

That's awesome. Back in the summer of 2012, I studied abroad and visited Turkey, Israel, and Palestine. Jerusalem is a wonderful city; a place that has its very own uniqueness.

I think you know perfectly well what I am talking about, and are only rationalizing in order to justify your post. Not to be a huge dick, but I would expect a bit of honesty and integrity from a bible-believing Christian.
As for the Uri Geller example, it would have been made a difference if the poster had used it as an opportunity to promote some kind of psychic belief system (or to bash it, for that matter), rather than just mentioning the name of a person who is genuinely famous (for good or bad) because of having been a prominent public figure internationally, appearing on many TV shows, popular magazines and so on.
It's the same difference as if someone said simply "I have met John Travolta", or additionally using that as an opportunity to promote scientology.
That kind of attitude generally irks people.

Warp, to be honest, your attitude towards Bisqwit is irking me.
He didn't come on in here and start throwing around John 3:16, asking anyone if they had a personal relationship with Jesus. I took Bisqwit's post as him sharing an experience that he felt fit within the topic. Heck, he mentioned the famous city of Jerusalem, which caught my attention and compelled me to further share another experience I've had in life.

The parentheses thing wasn't my main point, Warp. I'm not seeing how how you're coming to the conclusion that he's 'preaching his religion' for sharing a relevant life experience (Meeting famous people). He spoke at length about it, and embedded some links leading to more information, but where was he acting out of line?
And speaking of things being 'uncalled for', who are you to judge and take him to task for allegedly lacking 'honesty and integrity' for his personal beliefs? That just comes off as ridiculing someone, man.

The issue concerning my response to you was that you were hammering him for talking about famous Christian figures in his neck of the woods (Finland).
I wasn't the first one to object to his post. I was explaining why his post is quite off-topic and uncalled for.
It's quite clear that "famous" in this context means well known in popular culture, eg. because of appearing in movies, TV, magazines or other similar popular media, and known all across the spectrum. Those people he mentioned are not "famous" here in Finland, nor probably anywhere else either, save for a very narrow niche subculture. It's quite clear that his religious beliefs prompted him to write about them, rather than they being truly popular because of appearing in mass media.
I'm pretty sure he understand this, but nevertheless chose to try to rationalize it, rather than directly admitting that yes, it was his beliefs that prompted him to make the post, stretching the meaning intended by "famous people" in the original post. Hence the comment on honesty and integrity.
And for the record, he's a close friend of mine, and he has berated me in the past for some behavior of mine (and justly so), and that's completely fine by me. I'm pretty sure we are long past the phase of getting angry for expressing our opinions and views openly.
