I'd like to make a case for the Souls games here. They sparingly use music outside of boss battles, but the places where it is used, it's all the more effective. Your milage may wary on those, as I'm not sure how well the themes stand on their own without experiencing the actual moment in the game they are associated with. Nevertheless, I feel they're worth a listen.

Due to various circumstances, I've recently found myself playing Dust: An Elysian Tail.
The game has a very high quality soundtrack, but my favorite up to the point I've played so far must be the Abadis Forest and Archer's Pass theme.

Selections from a game called Fly'n. The impact of a couple of them - namely Cohomology - is neutered because ingame different parts of the the songs drop in and out dynamically as you travel through the levels, but overall, very top notch stuff. My personal favorite is Carbonic.
A hundred years from now, they will gaze upon my work and marvel at my skills but never know my name. And that will be good enough for me.
