This is my first TAS.
E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (also referred to simply as E.T.) is a 1982 adventure video game developed and published by Atari, Inc. for the Atari 2600 video game console. It is based on the film of the same name, and was designed by Howard Scott Warshaw. The objective of the game is to guide the eponymous character through various screens to collect three pieces of an interplanetary telephone that will allow him to contact his home planet.
Warshaw intended the game to be an innovative adaptation of the film, and Atari thought it would achieve high sales figures based on its connection with the film, which was extremely popular throughout the world. Negotiations to secure the rights to make the game ended in late July 1982, giving Warshaw only five and a half weeks to develop the game in time for the 1982 Christmas season. The result is often cited as one of the worst video games released and was one of the biggest commercial failures in video gaming history. The game's commercial failure and resulting effects on Atari are frequently cited as a contributing factor to the video game industry crash of 1983.
E.T. is frequently cited as a contributing factor to Atari's massive financial losses during 1983 and 1984. It was generally believed that as a result of overproduction and returns, millions of unsold cartridges were buried in an Alamogordo, New Mexico landfill. In 2013, plans were revealed to conduct an excavation to determine the accuracy of reports about the burial, and in April of the following year, the diggers confirmed that the Alamogordo Burial did include E.T. cartridges among other titles. James Heller, the former Atari manager who was in charge of the original burial, was also on hand at the excavation and revealed to the Associated Press that 728,000 cartridges of various titles were buried.
The any% just requires 3 engines. But the flower% requires 3 engines and reviving the flower. This is more interesting because in the movie, E.T. revive the flower.
Shouldn't we respect the movie ?
I used BizHawk with Frame Advance.
I did some route planning. There are only 24 rerecords in the final movie fil but I did several movie files so I would be just below 100 rerecords I guess. I did manipulate the RNG to have these engine and flower positions.

feos: This run was not entertaining, and could only go to Vault, which allows any% and 100% completions, but it doesn't qualify for any of those, since there are other items that this run ignores, and there is a faster run that collects only the required minimum of them. If you wish to try once again, please collect them all, or just improve the published run. Rejecting for now.
feos: Unrejecting, since it might be published, if the discussion proves a flower is enough for legit 100%. Please participate.
feos: The discussion showed that this game just doesn't qualify for any kind of a "full completion" run. So, as long as it's a Vault-only game, everything but any% have to be rejected.

I believe the flower in the ET game is just a one-up item; it is not something that is required for "100% completion". Therefore I don't feel that "flower%" counts as a distinct branch for this game.

I believe that reviving the flower is a category itself. In speedrun, it requires different routes than any%. Also, I like to see this category as respecting the movie. So why not ?

Here's an encode. Annoying as they are, the horizontal black bars appear to be part of the game: Link to video As I explained in this post in the "Yar%" discussion thread, the game doesn't count completion percentage and obtaining these easter eggs doesn't change the game, meaning these two runs are just slower any% runs. It's okay to want to show off more of the game by collecting additional items, but it's important to make sure those items count for something if you want it to be published here, especially if it's going to the Vault (which this run inevitably would if it didn't contain any tradeoffs). I did notice the route planning you did—good job on that and your efforts to optimize your movements! If possible though, try to make sure E.T. is always running instead of walking so you don't waste unnecessary time. While the only viable branch for this game (unless someone discovers a game-breaking glitch or something) is any%, there are lots of any% runs of games on the site that don't have a corresponding 100% TAS yet. Maybe you can find a game you like that is easy enough to TAS and 100% it, using the existing any% run as a handy reference.

100% completion movies are also viable to the Vault. The 100% goal may be debatable, and on that I'm inclined to give a thumbs up for "all items collected". The movie may fall due to being suboptimal, but I think its a valid category.

Well, there have been runs published that go out of the way for easter eggs: [2335] Genesis Phantasy Star IV "all sidequests, Blast from the Past" by janus in 1:59:10.18 That being said, this and the other run still feel really arbitrary. It's a flower and a small reference to a previous game. To me that isn't enough to warrant another category, especially because all it amounts to is a bit more aimless shuffling around. There are other games where categories like this would be much more appreciated... This just isn't one of them.

So is it really an "all items/easter eggs" run, or only "some arbitrary items" one?
Warning: When making decisions, I try to collect as much data as possible before actually deciding. I try to abstract away and see the principles behind real world events and people's opinions. I try to generalize them and turn into something clear and reusable. I hate depending on unpredictable and having to make lottery guesses. Any problem can be solved by systems thinking and acting.

The latter. The run goes for one easter egg out of three in the game. The Yar% submission similarly goes for a single different easter egg and then completes the game.

The flower isn't an easter egg, it is an item that can be "collected" and can only be collected once. To my understanding, any other item collected is more of the easter egg variety, but this one is not.

I wouldn't consider collecting a single item (out of one available) 100%. But I would consider collecting all available items as such, as long as there is nothing missed. By that criterion, neither of these 2 runs is 100%, but there can be one, right?

The real debate with all these E.T. movies is if it is possible to have 100% for this game. If yes, then one of these runs is publishable If no, they all must be rejected My personal opinion (and vote) is that the "3 required items plus flower" is the most appropriate definition of 100%, and in my mind is publishable. The fact that the "flower" run adds basically no value is valid but not a rejectable offense in context of the Vault. Because it is more important for the vault to stay minimally subjective. But vault rules being minimally subjective means this must be a clear cut definition. Is my opinion the consensus? I expect people to be divided on this issue. Note: I also added some clarification to the Vault rules. Easter eggs aren't intended to be a requirement for full completion, as they typically aren't in 100% movies on this site.

Based on the discussion here, it strikes me that "three items + flower + yar + indianajones + that so-called 'true ending'" would be a better definition of 100%. That said, I still don't see that as meaningfully distinct from the published any% run. I don't think that either one-ups (the flower) or easter eggs (yar/indy) have anything to do with 100% runs.

yar/indy are easter eggs, so yeah, those don't typically have anything to do with 100% The flower is essentially just a one-time 1up you can collect. 1ups don't typically have anything to do with 100% either. That's a good point.
