Submission Text Full Submission Page
This is a TAS of Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!! by DJ Incendration. It aims for the fastest KO possible, so you won't see him go down for a 3rd time in any round. I'm sorry if you don't like the goal; but think of this is the LegendOfMart TAS.

Game objectives

  • Emulator used: FCEUX 2.2.3 (Win32)
  • Aims for fastest in-game time
  • Manipulates luck!!

Comments:

Hello everyone! This is DJ Incendration. I'm a blind teenage speedrunner/TASer. I've been trying to make submittable/acceptable TASes of Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!! and Final Fantasy 1 (Japan). This is the fastest that anyone's EVER KO'd Mike Tyson without the use of cheats. I'm really sorry if you're not happy with it and think it's some kind of joke... it's not! Now onto the run itself:

Stage by stage comments

Round 1:
For the first 1:30 of Round 1, Tyson throws instant-knockdown "Dynamite Punches". You'll see me do proper punches (Mac throws left if Mike throws a right), but no delay as if we were TKOing him in the first round. We're going for fastest KO here, so no biggy. I opt not to knock him down a third time in Round 1, or KO wouldn't happen: just a round 1 TKO!
Round 2:
For the first 30 seconds, Mike will throw his Wink punches. I wanted to see how many he could do... I didn't want to take damage and have to get knocked down. You need full health for KOs to even be possible.
Round 3:
I get two stars, duck his punch, and then STAR PUNCH!! He'll get up on the count of 1. That's the absolute best for you, you know why? 'Cause even though he gets up with full health, 1 single star will knock his butt down again! It seemed random whether he stayed down or not, but I realized that I pressed Select which made me lose a little bit of health. This time he did! YAY!!!!

Other comments:

Many thanks go out to:
  • Phil for making his Last Boss only TASes
  • adelikat and McHazard: for inspiring me to do a TAS of this game
  • mPap, zallard1, sinister1, ouijawii and summoningsalt: for their wonderful SS runs and tutorial videos
  • All of you who like the run and think that the TAS was well done: for watching this run and giving me feedback
I think this's as good as it gets for KOs on Kid Dynamite. Actually, an improvement was found by McHazard a little while after the submission. Have a great time watching the run!

GoddessMaria: Judging.
GoddessMaria: Hello DJ Incendration and welcome to TASVideos! Unfortunately, this submission breaks site rules which is that a submission must complete the game without the usage of passwords. Using a password to skip levels does not count as Completing/Beating the Game. Not only that, but your submission is also quite improvable in a number of areas as mentioned in the submission thread. For these reasons, I am rejecting this submission.
Keep going at it!
DJ Incendration: Shucks, I couldn't replace submission file in time. Also, why is it that the Tyson only runs were published, yet this isn't?
Edit: I realize that the site rules have changed a lot, which makes the use of passwords a bad idea.

Too slow. [2488] NES Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!! by McHazard in 17:39.46 Has a 1:58:XX and deals with Mike in the first round. This old boy also got a 1:58:XX where the branch was to fight Mike only. You entered round 2. I stopped watching when you entered round 2. Better luck next time.

He specifically says a "KO" as in "not a TKO". Not that I think a movie that deals with Mike with a KO would be entertaining enough (let alone a single IL like this) but yeah.
[16:36:31] <Mothrayas> I have to say this argument about robot drug usage is a lot more fun than whatever else we have been doing in the past two+ hours
[16:08:10] <BenLubar> a TAS is just the limit of a segmented speedrun as the segment length approaches zero

Hi, DJ Incendration and welcome to TASVideos! I can tell your heart's in the right place when making this, however unfortunately you ended up picking a goal that's unlikely to be accepted. It is very rare that a non-full run TAS is published on this site. But I hope you look at this as a good learning exercise towards your next TAS! I also encourage you to post your work-in-progress to the forums, where you can get great suggestions and input to help make your TAS shine, and dramatically increase your chances of getting it published. Looking forward to seeing a TAS from you in the future!

Voted Meh because the goal choice is suspect, but the execution is well done.

I'm going to kindly point to this movie rule:
No skipping to the end with a password The point is to beat the full game, skipping major sections of the game with a password defeats the purpose. Exceptions may be granted under special considerations (such as the game being too long and repetitive); consult with a judge first.

This TAS isn't any% - it's basically a demonstration goal. Getting a TKO in the first round on Mike Tyson is the fastest way to defeat Mike Tyson. But downing Mike Tyson without needing a TKO is harder and uses a different strategy. This TAS attempts to KO Mike Tyson as fast as possible. I don't think it's acceptable, but it's not inherently redundant. EDIT: To clarify, I agree that it won't be accepted, because it's more showing something off rather than doing a standard completion of a game.

I would argue in favor of accepting this. I think that KOing Tyson is a reasonable goal for a superplay, and skipping to him with a password eliminate redundancy with the any% run.

Alright let's see what we've got here... Round 1 is executed well but not flawlessly. Occasionally you lose a frame or two when dodging. Pattern manipulation is good for the first 1:30 but then Tyson gives you some long delays during the second half. Overall, you clearly understand what a TAS is, you just need to spend a little more time on optimization. Round 2 is... well. Even if the category is acceptable rules-wise, almost this entire round is spent waiting for the next one. You have to do something entertaining when there's downtime in TASes, and this doesn't. Between rounds 2 and 3 you press select. It's not well known, but select can never refill you to full health... even if you're already at full health. No, really, it just has you lose 1 if you get a positive refill with full health. Goes against your no damage goal, and is also why the KO was random at the end. And there's one more problem...

I've been wondering about this for a while, but is there any way to know the exact time? I mean just like every other fight in the game where it also shows the miliseconds. I know RTA runners have done it before but I'm not completely sure.

A full-game Punch-Out TAS looking to KO Mike Tyson would literally be exactly the same as the any% for 16 minutes out of maybe 20. There would be way too much content overlap to publish both. I would also like to counterpoint with [1290] NES Dr. Mario by CtrlAltDestroy in 01:12.83 which was enthusiastically accepted. The method of skipping is functionally no different to me.

Nope. Don't even go down that route. Especially when the last 7 movies obsolete the 3 Mike Tyson only TASes that were made, and this is the important bit 2004. 2004 TASVideos isn't the best representation of TASVideos is now. It's basically more of a what not to do and those mistakes are later obsoleted by a full completion of the game. There's a few games with this example on what I just stated btw. It's not a single game case.
