About the Run

  • This TAS completes all maps (1000%) and Richter and bruner rooms. It is made with an emphasis on entertainment. As a result All Bosses. However, this TAS is basically a Branch Name to be rejected. I hope you enjoy my April Fools :).

Noxxa: Claiming for judgment.
Noxxa: The run itself is top quality as usual. Routing looked very good.
The category itself is, of course, the interesting part. Full map completion for various different types of games has not always been received very well. And on the surface, in this game it may not look to add much more than what the All Bosses category does.
I've watched the run a few times now, and I feel like there's still some interesting content shown in this movie that isn't in other categories. For example, Buried Chamber is passed through here, while it is entirely skipped in every other category of this game. Other locations like Sandy Grave or Nation of Fools are also usually only minimally seen as the shortest path to the boss is taken. The run does a good job at showing just how much there is to offer in this game.
One more thing also helps the map completion goal in this game - it is the game's official percentage completion goal. The game defines 1000% completion simply as getting 100% map data in each of the 10 locations, and therefore this movie fulfills the game's own definition of full completion. Defeating Brauner and Richter who are in "off-limits" areas is a slight extra, but it's small enough that it can be considered a relatively minor trade-off for a feel of added completeness.
Now, while accepting this movie would entail publishing a 5th branch for this game, I think in this case it is still reasonable. Two of the branches are essentially side-modes that use different sets of characters. The primary game and story mode (with Jonathan & Charlotte) can do fine with three branches, with one skipping the majority of the game, then one middle-ground run with maximized action, and finally a full-completion movie. Considering this movie counts as full completion, the Vault rules alone would already justify the existence of this category - although it clearly passes the entertainment bar for Moons.
In conclusion, I'm accepting this to Moons as a new branch (labeled as "1000%"), with the 100% completion tag.

Never seen the trick before that shortens the pause when collecting boss fights' orbs. Have you tested this trick in other Castlevania games?

Yes. Tested in DS three castlevania. The result is below. ・Dawn of Sorrow ...Yes ・Portrait of Ruin ...Yes ・Order of Ecclesia ...No Dawn of Sorrow and Portrait of Ruin can be improved in most Branches.

I don't really understand what makes this a joke submission. It seems like a legitimately optimized TAS that a lot of work went into, with a slightly unorthodox goal? Am I missing something?

As you said, the optimization and the route construction itself are the same as my other TAS. However, I feel that there is not much differentiation from all bosses tas. All similar TASs have been rejected in the past. However, I think it is not bad in terms of entertainment. I thought it would be an opportunity to submit from these circumstances. As you said, it may be slightly different from a joke. I'm sorry.

all bosses (the "real TAS") is an arbitrary goal hence not eligible for the vault; now for the moons on the other side... it actually has its chances

yeah, if this is sufficiently entertaining this could get Moons. which means it's time to watch it with the serious glasses.

I think the bigger question is if it’s more entertaining than all bosses. If so then maybe tbis branch should obsolete that (assuming all bosses are actually killed, which I am not sure of yet since I dont know this game enough)

Correct, all bosses are killed. In fact killing Richter and Bruner is not nesessary for a full map completion, so it would be more accurate to describe the branch as full map completion + all bosses. For me, the run do not seems to be significantly more entertaining than the all bosses run. It is like a longer version of the original one.

Full Map Completion runs often feature more varieties of tech than any% in order to efficiently cover the entire map, as well as showing off more of "the world" than All Bosses by their nature. I'm inherently biased towards the idea of Full Map Completion anyway, but I'll watch this and the standing All Bosses run against each other to see which one I find more entertaining. POSTCOMPARISON EDIT So a perfect example of what I mean by more varied tech is perfectly demonstrated in this submission's Nest of Evil section - since the map (and therefore map completion) is updated before the player transitions (horizontally? just to the right?) out of their current room, you're not actually picking up extra room transitions in cases where the routing otherwise matches precisely with the All Bosses run. For eight out of ten sections of the game, I find this submission to be clearly more entertaining than the established All Bosses route - Forgotten City is a perfect example of where this submission stands ahead for me. The two sections that feel lacking - Burnt Paradise and Nation of Fools - have the unfortunate problem of being perfectly symmetrical areas, so 100% Map Completion cannot help but to backtrack in these cases. This is not an issue with this submission in and of itself so much as an unfortunate consequence of the level design interacting with the goal choice - other games involving perfectly symmetrical sections would be equally hampered under this goal choice. temp youtube encode to follow, for those who wish to watch this in one sitting rather than two.

to add to my previous comment : as much as i like the full map completion, i think that to moon oriented viewers, it might have more "action downtimes" and backtracking than all bosses + some rooms are even completed too fast for the viewer to understand why it was routed like that... (example the last room from den of evil) entertainement and "wow-effect" wise the all boss version fits better as it's 10 min shorter and almost always either glitching or action packed.

Yeah, if this submission didn't include the bosses not needed for full map completion then this could have stood alongside All Bosses. Portrait of Ruin isn't saturated with submissions like Super Metroid is (though it's getting up there, and both currently have four published runs)

I just got around to watching it. Regarding entertainment, it's similar to All Bosses, if maybe a bit toned down. Considering All Bosses is one of my favorite TASes on the whole site, I would consider this a good thing. When I first started watching it, I felt a bit mixed. The route felt a bit awkward at times, entering rooms for the sake of entering rooms or making weird paths through larger rooms just so all the boxes were marked off. As it went on, however, it started to grow on me. I actually really liked seeing Burnt Paradise and Nation of Fools in this run, because in All Bosses they are skipped almost entirely. Buried Chamber was also nice to see because I'm pretty sure it's completely skipped in literally every other PoR run. Sticking around in areas for longer than usual also gave the OST some more time to shine at some parts, which helped for me. Then there were also gimmicks like the cars in the clock tower that otherwise are unseen that were fun to see here. So all in all, it was a very fun run to watch. As for whether it's publishable, there are various factors to consider. • We already have four PoR publications, as many as Super Metroid currently. • It's still very much comparable to All Bosses, but longer. We want to avoid having too many branches, or branches that are not sufficiently different enough from each other. • On the other hand, there are various parts of the game seen here that are not seen in any other PoR TAS, such as Buried Chamber. • The game has many, many things to count for full completion. Subweapons, spells, monster library, quests, items, bosses and so on - yet its percentage counter is determined solely by map fill and it is filled to 1000% here, so it would count as a valid full completion category for that reason. Essentially, this is the reverse of the Super Metroid situation, where items are counted for percentage but map fill is not. I'm not fully decided on it yet.
http://www.youtube.com/Noxxa <dwangoAC> This is a TAS (...). Not suitable for all audiences. May cause undesirable side-effects. May contain emulator abuse. Emulator may be abusive. This product contains glitches known to the state of California to cause egg defects. <Masterjun> I'm just a guy arranging bits in a sequence which could potentially amuse other people looking at these bits <adelikat> In Oregon Trail, I sacrificed my own family to save time. In Star trek, I killed helpless comrades in escape pods to save time. Here, I kill my allies to save time. I think I need help.

If those side mode runs get updates in the future, I think one way to do them without branch flooding is to do them in the same movie as "all character modes", where it might be faster to beat the main mode with Lv1 restriction ASAP first to get those items that boost your stats and then use a certain glitch to enter the 3 side modes with those items to speed the fights up.

Sorry that I didn't say this earlier, but it might be possible to skip Legion and still complete all maps by using a Magical Ticket right after getting Cog. If it is possible and faster, then the category for this run is strictly "1000%, all bosses".

This run was enough to make me watch both regular speedruns, and Let's Plays, of the game, to appreciate what was meant to happen. After doing that, though, I really appreciate the TAS. I think you have to know what's going on for the run to be entertaining – a commentated version might be worthwhile in that respect – but once you do, it's one of the better TASes on the site. The submission message could do with more information on the tricks used, and on the route (in particular, mentioning which items/spells/skills/relics/etc. are collected/equipped and why; it goes past so fast in the TAS that it's hard to tell by watching). Was the main form of movement just based on Charlotte's speed-increasing spell (that you made a detour for early)? Or was something else going on on top of that? It might also be worth mentioning how you managed to kill the bosses so quickly; again, the action in those sections goes past too quickly for it to easily be seen by a viewer without separate commentary. Many of the bosses simply appear to be a case of "endgame item vs. early-game boss" but that can't apply to all of them.
