"Woowee! Thanks for joining Club Nintendo, Mac!"
Emulator: Dolphin 5.0-15520
Controller: Sideways Wii Remote
Doc Louis's Punch-Out!! is an exclusive game that was released only to Club Nintendo Platinum members, and only in North America. It is by far the shortest Punch-Out game, and is really more like a demo for Punch-Out Wii. The game consists of only three different fights (all against the same opponent, Little Mac's trainer Doc Louis), fewer than even the arcade games, and the total in-game time is faster than SNES Super Punch-Out!! despite the ingame clock running faster.
As always with the Punch-Out games, the goal is fastest in-game time.
While going through the menus as fast as possible does mean the fight times can only be seen by slowing down playback, I opt to do this anyway to save time. Due to Warm-up and Training already having a TAS with visible times.
The Fights:
  • Warm-up: 40.52
-Doc's guard depends on the number of punches Mac has thrown, mod 6; he will block punches 1 & 5.
-This is why there's so much punching at the air during the fight. The sets of punches when Doc comes back to the center can't be done as fast as possible, or they'll land before the timer for his next move starts, delaying the next attack. For the sets of two the first punch is delayed, and for the set of three, it's the second punch.
-The clock runs at 25% speed during stuns, and finishing the stuncombo makes Doc recoil with the clock at 100%, so it's better to just wait until he recovers.
  • Training: 41.83
-In this fight Doc will let every 7th punch through and block everything else.
-Starting here intentionally blocked punches are used to start the timer for the next attack sooner. This doesn't help for short delays, such as the one between the first two attacks. A two-star punch will slow the clock down for longer after it lands than a one-star punch, and three-stars are even better. However, Doc will regenerate all his health if his health gets too low, so a three-star punch can't be used in this fight.
-A little trick is added onto this fight, that was developed by zallard1. after the RJ countering his "Duck this one!" attack, I opt to throw a right hook first instead of a left hook. Starting a buffer with the same side punch wastes 3 frames over an alternate side one, and it turns out if we were to start with an alternate side one, we would have to delay the last hook in the buffer sequence by 3 frames. This gets rid of that, meaning I can buffer all 4!
  • Sparring: 36.32
-We watch the cutscene up to that point because it makes his first attack come out a frame earlier. Another trick developed by zallard1.
-The goal of this fight is to get 3 stars and then get to his "Quick feet Mac!" attack as soon as possible, so that we can then perform an Instant Knock Out on Doc. A trick found by debblez & Mysteryman95.
-Doc will never let an unstunned punch through in this fight, no matter how many punches are thrown.
-The second attack has a long animation and counterpunching won't give up a star, so it's move canceled.
-His next attack is move cancelled.
-His slow uppercut is move cancelled.
-Doc is then recentered to save time.
-The jab that he earns a star off of is move cancelled. We actually cancel this on the second frame possible, as doing it on the first frame possible causes a very long recoil animation from Doc when you get your third star, resulting in a 40 second time.
-We throw our triple star into him to end the fight.

My other submission was rejected so I made a new one, stops input at correct time (although still a frame or two slower than McHazard because I opted to waste a bit of real time to save 0.06 in game time, as that is more my goal), and also movie file was made starting from beginning and with Dual Core off.

Thank you! aswell as making sure I set up this TAS correctly, also tried to make it less boring than my previous lol. I have one quick question, will this TAS be shown as slower than McHazard, because it is a bit slower in real time? even though it's faster in game time?

TASes always get displayed with their real time from start input to end input. However, it will likely have the in game time in the description and a clarification on why the movie time seems slower. And for purposes of judgement, we care about gameplay improvements (which is the point of going for IGT in the first place), we don't fault the authors for more accurate emulation being slower.

It is not only the accurate emulation which is making it seem slower. Delaying by 150 frames may be the main thing making it seem slower. McHazard delayed the time screen for every fight by 20 frames, while this TAS doesn't do that. 40 frames saved there. However, we delay by 150 frames so that Doc's first attack comes out a frame (0.06 in-game seconds) earlier. This nets 110 frames lost in real time.

That is correct, however I believe "150" was an approximation when zallard looked into the cutscene, I believe I wait around 110-120, this appeared to be the first frame I could skip cutscene and still get 36.32, instead of only being able to get 36.38. This also means that the TAS with McHazard's strat was actually 39.32, not 39.38, because he instantly skipped the cutscene.

I'm assuming PokerPlayer did the encode already? but that could be something else. I could do the encode if there is a source on how to do it, if it hasn't been done already.

I did it indeed; EZ's question was before I added in that encode.

Hey Awosomeandy, I wrote the publication text for this submission a bit generically as I had a hard time interpreting the improvements that were made. If you provide a very brief (1 sentence preferably, 2 tops) summary of improvements over the previous TAS, I can update the text! Of course it can also remain as it is if you are satisfied. And actually, it doesn't have to be me that updates it, but in fact any editor if you have someone in particular in mind.

Sure, here's what I had in mind to add to it: "This new TAS of Doc Louis's Punch-Out!! improves Sparring by incorporating a newly discovered Instant Knock-Out to the game. Saving 3 seconds from Sparring's previous TAS."

I've updated the description with a slightly reworded version of this, in order to stay consistent with site style.

Definitely for the best, I'm quite shit at wording sentences if you can tell from the Sparring notes :D
