toccata and fugue in d minor intensifies

Game objectives

  • Emulator used: libTAS 1.4.3/MAME v0.246
  • Command-line: dkongjrj.zip -rompath /usr/games/roms/ -w -skip_gameinfo -nonvram_save

Comments

This TAS uses the Japanese version which has all 4 levels in order, the base ROM has them out of order, so I went with the one that's consistent with the NES release.

Stage by stage comments

Stage 1

RNG changes frequently, and your movement affects it. I have to delay jumping for a frame at the very beginning so the red chomper didn't go down the vine.
Jumping is slower than walking so minimum jumps are ideal, and I made sure my RNG was manipulated so I didn't have to jump over a blue or red enemy near the end.

Stage 2

I pause for a moment near the apple because I don't want it to hit the enemy, as that pauses the game for a brief moment. I have to wait for another bird to drop down before continuing so I take a moment to climb higher, letting me get around the bird slightly faster.

Stage 3

a few small pauses here and there to change the direction the blue enemies go, although the last one before the end is unavoidable so I have to jump twice.

Stage 4

key thing about this stage is making sure the red enemies don't go down a chain you need to climb up, as they climb extremely slowly. The birds as far as I can tell are on a set path. It didn't seem like they were easily affected by RNG changes or if their movement is even affected by RNG, so some pauses are required to get around them.

final thoughts

This was pretty much all I could find, if there's any other improvements that can be made that people find, I'd be happy to apply them in this submission. Or if they want to be added as co-author, that's fine too.

feos: Claiming for judging.
feos: Couldn't find any glitches (or info about them) myself, so this looks good to me. Accepting.
fsvgm777: Processing.

I really enjoyed this and voted yes. I assume you are familiar with the NES version's glitches and that none of them are applicable for the arcade version?

Not very familiar but I did check them out. Some of them seem unlikely to be applicable for the Arcade version but I haven’t done any research into such glitches. I am unsure if any glitches for the Arcade version are documented anywhere unlike the original Donkey Kong game. I mostly just went through this movie doing what the game intended. I can redo some stages if there are glitches that people discovered. But there doesn’t seem to be any research I could find.

Yeah, I'm not surprised if those are specific to the NES port
