Super Adventure Rockman TAS by Noxxa in 1:17:56

Comments

Super Adventure Rockman is the best Mega Man game ever. Keiji Inafune, the creator of Mega Man, also called it the best Mega Man game ever. It features an expansive story, as well as stages with action-packed shooting, with 16 robot masters to top it off. The Robot Masters are all from Mega Man 2 and Mega Man 3, leading to some healthy fanservice, since Mega Man 2 and 3 are generally considered some of the better games of the series. They're also tougher than ever, even Metal Man takes more than a couple shots to defeat. Other Robot Master highlights include Flash Man teleport spamming repeatedly, including after every hit, Shadow Man forming up to 4 illusions to attack from all directions, Gemini Man splitting up repeatedly to attack with a barrage of lasers, Hard Man having the durability to take damage from more than 200 Mega Buster shots, and it all goes on. Following the Robot Masters, you enter the underground fortress of Dr. Wily, where you fight Ra Thor, Dr. Wily's most powerful humanoid robot ever, with barrages of projectiles and force fields. And after that you fight the most powerful incarnation of the Yellow Devil ever. What kind of a Yellow Devil has weaknesses anyway? The game also features the other Robot Masters from Mega Man 1, actively assisting Mega Man. Did you know that Guts Man defeats Heat Man all by himself?
The game is so awesome, it required three disks to contain the full game. This TAS plays through all three in succession.

Disc by disc comments

Disc 1

The adventure starts. Metal Man, Bubble Man, Heat Man, Flash Man, Quick Man and Shadow Man are defeated. Need I say any more?

Disc 2

Proto Man pops up, and also, Wood Man, Air Man, Crash Man, Snake Man, Needle Man and Gemini Man are defeated.

Disc 3

The final part of the adventure. Features Magnet Man, Hard Man, Top Man and Spark Man being defeated. And the final stage and final bosses, obviously.
If you think these comments are being nondescript, then... well, just go watch the run itself. Because it's too awesome to just describe in words.

Ending

For the ending, Mega Man uses the most powerful weapon of his arsenal that he's ever had: charging both of his arms at once, and launching the mighty Double Rock Buster at his opponent - all while epic heroic music is playing in the background. This instantly blows up and crumbles the entire fortess. Need we any more establishing that Mega Man is freaking awesome?

adelikat: Well, I unrejected this with hopes of accepting. However, it was uncovered that this submission uses the USA BIOS for this Japanese ROM which violates this rule. This rule is also cited here.
I wasn't 100% sure the correct rejection region here. I settled on "Goal" but if there is another one we use for this type of situation, I am happy to change it.

The movie has literally no TAS related entertainment value. However, I’m not sure what vault rules it violated on its 2nd rejection, but regardless, I think this meets all current rule requirements, thoughts?

Personally I'd rather see this TAS updated and moved to BizHawk instead of it being a PSXjin TAS.

While that seems somewhat reasonable seeing as PSXjin is a disallowed emulator now, it would also kinda suck to force the author to do even more work, seeing as this submission, April Fools or not, only languished in Gruefood for so long because of publication class elitism or similar. I'll have to check if BizHawk is capable of parsing and converting PJM files, if not I might be willing to do the grunt work of converting it to a BK2 recording as a side project. It can't be too hard, 99% of the run is cutscenes after all

This TAS has a major issue. It's using the wrong bios. SCPH-1001 is an American bios, which is being used in turn with the Japanese title.

Porting this TAS to BizHawk would be much more preferable, and it doesn't have to be the author who's "required" to do it, in your words. Community work is a thing. People are allowed to port someone else's work and take secondary credit where need be The project should be mostly salvageable to keep Noxxa's name as an author without them needing to update the title themselves.

Alright, having had a little time to think about this, I'll give it my best shot. However, whether or not this works out will largely be dependent on if the switch from the American BIOS to the Japanese BIOS presents any major timing issues, and most importantly, whether it will present any significant RNG issues. Any minor timing issues such as platform-dependent load times can easy be remedied by adding or removing blank inputs as necessary, but if, say, the boss patterns completely change as a result of the switch, then that's going to be a problem. At that point I would effectively be recording a brand-new TAS using the existing recording as a base, and I feel like the expected quality and technical knowledge for Megaman series submissions is way too high for me to be comfortable with that, even if this particular entry is hot ass. I expect to get to work on this as soon as I'm done with my Mighty Jill Off TAS, which could be as early as this evening depending on if Hourglass decides to cooperate or not. EDIT: Wait, this is a rail shooter? Okay, scratch that, this should be easy

Noting for posterity that it's VERY helpful if you make sure to list your ROM version with proper scene naming scheme, the group to which said naming scheme complies if relevant, and the hashsums of all of said files; this particular game fortunately doesn't appear to have multiple releases to worry about, but I would really rather be sure, especially when I have to deal with a THREE DISC (!!!) game taking up valuable space on my hard drive for the purposes of converting a TAS recording.

Alright, I've got some bad news: - First, BizHawk PJM importing appears to be SUPER scuffed. It didn't populate the Core field in the header, so it just crashed when I tried to create the converted BK2 recording, and once I unzipped it and fixed the header, it appears that the conversion process has dropped all of the Start inputs, and probably more. - Secondly, sync DOES appear to be BIOS dependent, as when I attempted to sync the recording in PSXjin with a BIOS other than the 1001 BIOS the movie was initially created with, it ate shit once it encountered the second menu selection within the game proper, and totally screwed up the timing at the second shooting segment as a result. While none of this is impossible to overcome, these issues bring this strongly out of the realm of "easy job", and it would probably take enough time and effort that I would end up yoinking primary authorship of the submission all things considered. As such, I can't really suggest leaving this submission open indefinitely when I can't really offer any concrete timeline for when I'm gonna get this movie remade to modern emulator requirements if ever, and if I do end up doing it it would probably be better off as a new submission. I think this one's gonna go back to gruefood, unfortunately

I don’t think the use of PSXjin is reason to reject considering it was submitted at a time when it was still acceptable. As long as we can still get the run to sync and avi dumped.

And it was still common to reject TASes over it using the wrong bios. That's not an justification to publish something using the wrong bios.

So that was added in 2010 while this movie was 2012. I am less in favor of accepting the movie now that I’ve learned this fact.

Perhaps Mode, as used for #5653: Zupapa's MSX Blagger in 14:21.04. Not sure of other examples.

This was a comical rollercoaster while it lasted for the last couple days, but my favorite part has to be that this movie has now been rejected a grand total of four separate times. I'm pretty sure that's a record in itself. The best part has to be that it got rejected for a reason that could have been identified anyway if anyone else so much as tried to actually play back the movie file, yet it took 11 and a half years for that to happen. Funny how things go. Still wondering if there will be efforts to resync it, though.
