Hello! This is a TAS of the Pal version of Punch-Out!! featuring Mr. Dream. This version inspired Phred's Cool Punch-Out 2 Turbo. You may be wondering why I chose this version and not MTPO Pal. Well, PO Pal has some tricks that don't work on any other version. These tricks are hard to pull off, but save crazy amounts of time.

Why are you submitting this?

I was originally not going to submit this, as it may feel slow to some viewers. However, a person in the comments of my encode wanted to see this on the TASVideos channel. At that time, though, I was unfortunately banned for three months. Thankfully, the ban has ended, so I can finally submit this.

clock times:

  • Glass Joe: 41.97
While this has been known for a long time, it is not as well known as the 42.00 that's doable on all versions.
  • Von Kaiser: 34.00
Similar to the 35.61 on NTSC, I delayed the 7th punch a bit so his next jab would come out sooner.
  • Piston Honda 1: 33.82
This fight was a nightmare to TAS. The max damage uppercuts at the end of phase 1 were the worst part.
  • Don Flamenco 1: 14.61
The only real difference here is the buffer in phase 1. Instead of quick dodges, I do two slow dodges.
  • King Hippo: 35.00
This fight isn't that hard to manipulate, thank goodness we don't have to wait around like RTA does on NTSC.
  • Great Tiger: 24.25
The first substantial improvement compared to NTSC. By holding Up exactly three more frames than the minimum, you'll land your punch every time.
  • Bald Bull 1: 47.97
After the 30 second mark, the same tech from the Great Tiger fight can be used here.
  • Piston Honda 2: 37.97
Unfortunately, using a body blow at the end wastes a tiny bit of real time, but saves a frame in game.
  • Soda Popinski: 39.97
Instead of misdirected gut punches, we use jabs when we need to land them. This saves a bit of time.
  • Bald Bull 2: 1:02.61
Unlike the NTSC versions, you can actually land stars into his rolling jabs. While you only get to see that once, it saves five seconds or so.
  • Don Flamenco 2: 55.82
I'm not sure how this adjustment works, but you can actually deal some decent damage to him after avoiding a jab.
  • Mr. Sandman: 1:13.82
Ever wondered why getting knocked down is faster in this fight? Well, it's actually slower! By doing the same technique as on Tiger, Bull and Soda, Sandman can't block most of our punches.
  • Super Macho Man: 37.82
Unlike the NTSC version, you can actually knock him down the third time before he does his super spin punches. Also, you can punch him once after a max damage uppercut with the short delay.
  • Mr. Dream: 1:58.00
Yeah, I know, Mr. Dream is not as cool as Tyson. However, the Tiger tech can't be found on any other version, so you'll have to see me take him down.
  • Total time (in-game): 10:57.63

possible improvements:

  • It may be possible to save time on Piston Honda 1 if a way is found to do the NTSC strat faster.

Special Thanks:

Thanks go to McHazard, Zallard1, Sinister1, Pap, Adelikat, Phil, and Summoningsalt for their TASes, speedruns and tutorials that helped me get into this game. Enjoy!

adelikat: Replaced submission file with one that improves Bald Bull 2 to 1:02.61 as requested by author

DrD2k9: Claiming for judging.
DrD2k9: Optimization looks good.
As best I understand it, some aspects of the game's timing were changed for the PAL release (such as Little Mac's movement speed) while other aspects were not altered (including opponent speeds). These types of differences allow for variations in strategies against the opponents compared to those strats used in an NTSC run.
Accepting. Also updating the game catalog with title overriedes to show the PAL versions of the game as "Punch-Out! (Europe)" and dropping the "PAL" branch.

I voted yes, very well done TAS, thanks for making this. My obviously biased opinion, is that this differs enough from the NTSC version to warrant another branch. To the uninitiated it might just look like just randomly punching opponents and knocking them out, the same as the other TAS. However, there's a lot going on here, and a lot of technical differences between the two.

I'd think Tiger, Bull or Sandman would be most notable, because they're the main ones with the biggest time-saving trick in this version.
