Wait, this character looks familiar? Is it Mega Man? No, but beautifully replicates him! That is Beck for you!

Mighty Gunvolt "Beck" in 06:46.39

Run objectives

  • Aims for fastest time
  • Intentional damage to save time
  • Uses an optimal character (Beck is designed for fast movement)
  • RNG manipulation

Difference between Beck and Gunvolt

  • Beck is the character from Mighty No.9. If you play this game, you would immediately notice that it is a Mega Man clone, with Beck replicating Mega Man's features.
  • Unlike Gunvolt, Beck has a buster shot as his main weapon, and he can dash instead of double jump. While this removes some possible glitches such as screen scroll zip, his dashing ability can clear all stages quicker than Gunvolt, hence why this run is a lot faster.
  • Beck also has an air dash that's trigged after charging the buster. It is not that useful but can help skipping some puzzles.
  • The downside of Beck is that he doesn't kill bosses quickly, similarly to Gunvolt. Beck can only shoot regular pellets, while Gunvolt has his beam that can whip out bosses in less than 5 seconds. However, this game's hitbox can allow as many shots as possible to hit the boss. This can speed up the boss fights noticeably by dealing 3 shots per cycle, instead of just 1. Thanks to Greenalink for mentioning that to me!
  • On 3DS version, for some reason, they didn't add an animation to Beck after he clears a level. While this is irrelevant to gameplay but it saves some time compared to Gunvolt as he has an animation at the end of each level.

Level comments

  • One thing to note before explanation is that the start of sliding animation is slow as Beck gets stuck for like 4-5 frames. Shooting before sliding instantly initiates the sliding animation, thus during the entirety of the run, I keep shooting while sliding. With only 3 shots possible on screen, managing this trick is mandatory, thus sometimes I shoot to the opposite direction to keep the momentum.
  • The first attack of each boss is usually determined by how many enemies die before the fight, so managing number of enemies destroyed is necessary for optimal fights.

Train

  • This is the first level, and it is straightforward. Beck is too fast at the start but he gets blocked by red barriers. I had to slow down to destroy them before moving on.
  • Boss fight was simple. Thankfully the amount of enemies destroyed was good for an optimal first move. This significantly helped me optimize it. However, it is hard to control the boss RNG during the fight, thus his jump at the end was not the best outcome, but it is much better than his Sunshine Nova dash attack which is a lot slower.

School

  • The entire stage was optimized to get the ideal RNG which spawns the boss's weak spot early. I had to destroy 9 enemies for that. The fight ended in one cycle as the boss's weak spot has no i-frames.

Lab

  • I just optimized the stage as much as I could. I used Beck's air dash to skip one small puzzle to save some time. Boss fight was not that difficult to optimize but similarly to Train boss, the last jump isn't the best outcome but much better than him throwing some eggs mid air lol.

Tower

  • There was one room with a ladder that only Beck could get into. It theoretically can save couple seconds but it is blocked by a fire wave enemy which shoots in your way, causing a lot of time loss, so I had to choose the regular ladder.
  • Boss fight was gimmicky and not that easy to optimize but managed to get the most out of it and finish it as early as possible.

Mirror

  • This level only has the boss fight, meaning it is almost impossible to manipulate first attack. Unfortunately, I got the worst start which costs 4 seconds. I tried to manipulate it from previous stage with no success. The pattern only changes if the fight starts a lot late, making the those 4 seconds seem optimal. I tried to do something funny there at least but I'm not sure how to save them. I'm leaving that as possible improvement for future runs (if possible). The fight on its entirety ended quickly enough!

Special thanks

  • Goes to Greenalink for his very helpful commentary he provided in his Gunvolt run. He also gave different tips on how to deal with RNG and bosses. Really appreciate his help.
  • And as usual, you for watching :)
Idk what to say about Beck but it is a good character lol

CoolHandMike: Claiming for judging.
CoolHandMike: Replacing file with one that does not have extended input. https://tasvideos.org/userfiles/info/638849708510838680 this file is the one that has the extended input and should be used for the encoding since it apparently fixes some resolution issue in the ending.
CoolHandMike: Looks good with no issues I could tell. Note that the character Beck is used and this character is unable to double jump. This means that the screen zip bug cannot be used like for the character Gunvolt. This also completes the main game levels.
Accepting to Standard and branch name Beck.
Good job!
Note to encoders. Use this file since it has some extended inputs to fix a resolution issue apparently. https://tasvideos.org/userfiles/info/638849708510838680

Yeah, Beck's awesome. Wish we could've seen that anime they were going to make about him. I was surprised how fast the run was! Yes vote of course.

McBobX there are some extra inputs at the end so this could be ended a bit sooner. Could you look at this and post a userfile with the fix?

Hey CoolHandMike. Yeah, those extra input are for just correcting the resolution during the final loading screen. I can definitely cut them out if necessary otherwise I thought it would be better to include them for encoding purposes :)

i think it would be best to have the movie file that fixes resolution linked for encoders. Then have the one that is fastest as the actual movie.

Alright, I'll fix it once I'm on my laptop later and edit this post with updated input file. EDIT: Here is the input file trimmed as requested. And here is the submitted file which should be the one that is extended.

This is a V1.0 thing that's 3DS exclusive. If you download v2.0 update to USA/JP rom or play EUR rom, you'll get the level entry and exit animations. Ekoro is going be interesting to test out, as her v2.0 time save to get 4 shots per hit cycle is going to be fairly minor, possibly 3 less hit cycles saving 90 frames per fight V1.0 if 11 x 3 and V2.0 if 8 x 4.

Oh interesting! Well, I did realized it is 3DS exclusive at least xD. I guess it is still optimal to choose this version though

It seems like so, though from my experience with this run, it is barely possible to get 3 shots in. Beck's ability to slide helps a ton compacting all 3 shots in small area so they pretty much hit in one point. Not sure how Ekoro will be able to do that.
