Submission Text Full Submission Page
This is my Kirby's Dream Land 3 Tool Assisted Speedrun. This took just a couple days to make and the result was some fast gameplay. I took my time while making this TAS and I was doing good at the game.

Game Objectives: Beat the game without collecting any heart stars and beat the posessed King Dedede.

  • Emulator used: BizHawk version 2.10
  • I wanted to beat the game as fast as possible without using any glitches..
  • I wanted to go for an any% tool assisted speedrun.
  • I beat the game without collecting any heart stars despite completing some of the missions properly
I completed the rest of Kirby's Dream Land 3 without using an animal helper such as Kine, Coo, Rick, et cetra. And for some occasions I take damage just for boosts in case if I used an ability and slowed down after I used a certain ability like the needle ability.
I wanted to make another TAS completing an entire game, and the game I had in mind was Kirby's Dream Land 3 and thus, I started my run, I was speeding through the stages with ease, even beating all of the bosses without dying.
some of the stages require the player to complete some unique challenges to keep going through the entire game.
Grass Land
The first level of Kirby's Dream Land 3 that represents a grassy area with six missions that the player must complete to keep going through the game.
Ripple Field
It represents a water level with certain paths that you can go through while playing the game.
I was using Kine go speed through the water, but I had to ditch him because a tight space was blocking me in one of the stages in Ripple Field.
I sped through the long stage in Level 5 known as Iceberg.
It is a stage where you have to bring Nago to his friend, it is a very long stage in Iceberg but I went through it as fast as I can non-stop. I want to improve my speed, and my timing.

CoolHandMike: Claiming for judging.
CoolHandMike: Hello Zain and thank you for the submission. Tasvideos rules require accepting optimized tas movies, and this submission does not meet the optimization standard. Generally optimization comes up when there noticeable issues in gameplay, or when known time saving tricks fail to be used. A large part of judging is doing comparisons with existing speedruns and tases which I did do here. Notably, these two movies https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7dzadcIC6ig and [3760] SNES Kirby's Dream Land 3 "best ending" by WaddleDX in 1:04:01.22 show that this submission does not make use of a lot of strategies and tricks available for a tool assisted speedrun. In these two movies the authors have good movement with minimal pauses, and use Kirby's abilities to knock out blocks to good moving forward, as well as using powers that allow Kirby to move fast. In this submission there are notable pauses and many fast movement abilities are not used. Since this is a tas, the fast movement cycle trick used in the tas many years ago should also have been used. While these two movies are not "glitchless" the time saved using glitch does not account for the time disparity. Levels are minutes slower than their counterparts.
Rejecting due to optimization.
In the future please upload a file to userfiles or a recording of the tas to youtube and get feedback from users on the forum or discord. There are a lot of users that are very familiar with tasing and gaming in general and can also give advice.

Well, it depends on how you worked hard on it. If we look at the re-record count vs the run length, it doesn't seem to be balanced. In fact, it shows that there wasn't solid effort put into this. 5k rerecords in an 80 minutes can on the first glance say that there are a lot of suboptimal plays out there. Usually, for previous runs and depending on the technicality of the game, a run of this length should have over 20k and above of rerecords. Now, judging by that only would be really inaccurate and not reflecting how your run was made. I will give this a watch and let you know why, possibly, people voted that.

Why are there a bunch of "<" and ">" randomly put in the submission text?...
my personal page - my YouTube channel - my GitHub - my Discord: thunderaxe31 <Masterjun> if you look at the "NES" in a weird angle, it actually clearly says "GBA"

Comparing your run on the first level with current Any% run shows a big gap in terms of optimization. The current Any% uses Kirby optimally by constant jumping and usage of slides. The second player helping in clearing the way also further enhances it. So clearly you need to work on this a lot more! Link to video

Welcome to the site Zain! Well, we've all been there when we just started. My advice for you to improve and become even more skilled is to:
  • Plan ahead how will your TAS go, stage by stage. This can be done by checking different resources such as current published runs on the site, current world record of the game/category you're running, some documented tricks and time saving techniques/glitches, etc.
  • Test all possible ideas in every room with what the game provides you, then decide on the fastest one. For example, assuming you're playing with Kirby alone, you could do constant jumping and sliding to move faster and avoid bonks to the stars blocks, instead of just running and accept any obstacle you have. This is what most effort go to, and consequently increases rerecord count significantly.
  • Watch current published runs as well on emulator with input display. This helps you figure out how tricks and glitches are done in the game. Also, you can use any as many other tools (such as RAM Watch/Search and lua scripting) to your advantage to understand the game even more.
  • Be patient! TASing is a relaxing experience. I'm sure you noticed it while working on this run. Do not rush! take it slowly and step by step until you finish your project. Also you can share your progress here on the site forum for your game, or in the Discord server.
The site accepts high quality runs that are almost perfect. We cannot allow runs that are suboptimal in comparison to what we have or what we expect from the game/run. I recommend you take the above notes into consideration and I hope you bring us a more improved version of this game! Looking forward to it!

I noticed some mistakes in this run such as bumping into a wall at 0:33 and not taking the door directly at 1:15 (although I'm not familiar with this game in particular, in other Kirby games you could float up to take the door which would be faster than jumping up to it). At 1:21, it would probably be faster to hop over the enemy and then over the wall, or to inhale the enemy and then to jump over the wall. Other than that, in most Kirby games you can preserve speed when starting to float by letting go of left or right.

Is there an equivalent movie to compare this to that also does RTA any% glitchless?

RTA did some auto scroller skips + used 2P but otherwise it's glitchless pretty much I guess. I quickly glanced at RTA WR and zain's TAS and I found RTA was over 2 minutes faster at the end of world 1, where no glitches involved yet. I guess that alone proves this TAS failed to beat existing record.

The current 1P Any% RTA record is 59:48 and is basically glitchless. The 2P record doesn't use much that would qualify as a glitch and is a couple minutes faster.

Hmm so ballpark figure how fast should an optimized any% glitchless tas be you think?

At most I would expect it to be 57:30 1P, and easily sub-57 2P.

Even if this TAS isn't well-optimized, I'm happy Kirby's Dream Land 3 is getting some recognition for once.
SMB2U is the best NES Mario game.

If you're unaware, we already have a KDL3 publication.

I am aware of this, I was stating that there has not been a non-Best Ending submission for this game. (Besides this TAS, of course) Similar to how there is only a 100% run for Dream Land 2. I probably should have said "getting some more recognition."
SMB2U is the best NES Mario game.
