This movie revisits the "maximum casualties" category for Oddworld: Abe’s Oddysee, incorporating new tricks, community discoveries, and several routing improvements.

Game Objectives

  • Very Bad Ending
  • Heavy Mudokon Abuse
  • Uses Death to Save Time or Not
  • Emulator: BizHawk 2.11
  • BIOS: PSX_3.0(A).bin

Dooty's Comments

2012… Let’s move on, shall we? l1ndblum reached out to discuss the new casualties discovered by the SpeedRun community, and since this is the only Abe's Oddysee run that hasn’t been obsoleted yet, I went ahead and implemented their improvements into this TAS.

New Tricks

Blindfolded Play

By using the Backward Jump to pass through walls, Abe will advance to the next screen, but the camera sometimes will not follow him. Useful for not spawning doors.

Bump and Fall

Abe falls through the floor when he bumps on certain walls . Fortunately, the Mudokons can do exactly the same.

Clueless Auto Turn Delay

Climbing ledges will automatically turn Abe around if he is facing the wrong direction. By pressing Up+Action, that action will be delayed, but he will not turn around.

Multiple Backward Jumps

This is the same Backward Jump from the published run, but if you press Up+Jump, Abe will keep jumping forever. With this improved trick, Abe can now pass through any wall in the game.

Stage by Stage

This run is all about killing, blowing, shooting, grinding, smashing, and bashing those poor Mudokons, but since it's an improvement, I'll explain how it was improved.

Scrabania

The Speedrun community found that the three Mudokons in one of the secret areas here can be eliminated using the Bump and Fall trick.

Paramonia

The three Mudokons in Paramonia still can't be killed, but the first Villager can be hurt and killed! And by bees! A guy named UltraStars3000 somehow found this out.

Final Thoughts

We’re getting close to eliminating them all! Thanks to the community’s efforts, 91 standard Mudokons - plus 2 extras - can now be killed.

Special Thanks

  • l1ndblum — I used a lot of his 93-casualty speedrun strategies here. Thank you.
  • UltraStars3000 — The amount of tinkering required to kill this Villager was insane! Thank you.

Possible Improvements

  • New OOB in Paramonia, as suggested by l1ndblum:
but then the game became really unstable, and I couldn't finish the next stage.
  • Try not to spawn enemies, as suggested by Samlocke:
It's possible to avoid spawning some enemies, saving a bit of time, especially the Slog right before the Board Room.

nymx: Claiming for judging.
nymx: oops, I was trying to accept another TAS. Sorry....unclaiming.

nymx: Claiming for judging.
nymx: Ok...now that we have settled out the details...we will go with what was submitted. I understand that this game is heavily sensitive to lag, which means we will see desyncs on any earlier changes made in the movie.
So the movie looks good and the end goal is acceptable. It would be nice to see Dooty and Samtastic work together on a final version to clean this TAS up.

Nice to see you back TASimg again Dooty, I noticed a little thing that can be improved around 52:24 with the Slog that spawned causing it to disappear. This can loose a little bit of time comparing to my any% run he doesn’t spwan at all at that section.

Thank you, Sam. 52:24, right? I’ll check it out and see how it can be improved. Thanks again for taking the time to watch and give feedback! edit: Spawning and despawning enemies does take some time, but in this specific spot it doesn’t seem to make much difference, since Abe doesn’t need to jump over those mines - and jumping is slower overall. I’ve just compared both variations of that section:
  • Alive Abe: 319 frames
  • Dead Abe: 200 frames
I am old enough to know better, but not enough to do it.

Yeah I'm talking about the actual bit when the Slog disappears at the end of Zulag 4 before the Boardroom. In most runs and TASes the slog doesn't spwan so the disappearing animation doesn't happen. In my 100% run I was able not to spwan any Slogs in that section so the animation doesn't appear: https://youtu.be/r4Txh4ZCA_g?si=zFZs_U-UCm7hBCk-&t=3818

Oh, I get it. I'll list it under possible improvements then, along with some l1ndblum's suggestions. Thanks again!

Here’s something I noticed. What about the ledge drop around 01:15? I feel my way in the 12:50 run is quicker. I had a go at doing the Mudokon rescue strat in Zulag 1 it’s doable in RTA on PC, nice find!

That part does look a bit strange, but it’s actually faster to start walking right after the drop than to wait for the animation to finish. Interestingly, in the PAL version of the game, the behavior is the opposite.

I tried doing that strat on the PC version, the stop turn glitch is difficult in realtime the ledge glitch is easier. Update I just did a check, the way I do it in the any% TAS, on PC I got a 4.06 and your way I get a 4.18...

I see that some better optimizations are feasible. Are they going to be written up as potential future improvements, or are you going to try and implement them? I can imagine that this game is not "sync friendly".
I recently discovered that if you haven't reached a level of frustration with TASing any game, then you haven't done your due diligence. ---- SOYZA: Are you playing a game? NYMX: I'm not playing a game, I'm TASing. SOYZA: Oh...so its not a game...Its for real? ---- Anybody got a Quantum computer I can borrow for 20 minutes? Nevermind...eien's 64 core machine will do. :) ---- BOTing will be the end of all games. --NYMX

Tell me about sync issues I been trying to improve my Exoddus 100% TAS again and it lags so heavily on PSX hopefully the PC will be better!

Yes, that sounds fine. I tried quite a few different approaches - such as changing the order of the stages and doing Paramonia before Scrabania - but unfortunately the game ends up softlocking in random places. Given that, I think it’s best to go with what has been submitted.
