Genesis Splatterhouse 3 "Best ending" TAS
It’s been a long time since I’ve done a TAS or a speedrun in general. Today is a special day because I’ve released a new project after many years working with
EZGames69. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.
Objetives:
- Aims for fastest time
- Manipulates luck in some stages
- Played a hardest difficult
About of game:
The game is about a man who wants to rescue his wife and son. Under the influence of the mask and armed with its powers, he is about to enter the haunted mansion, which is overrun with undead creatures and terrifying monsters. You must complete each stage before time runs out, because if it does, different events will occur leading to a different ending. This game has several endings, which is why this post is tagged ‘Best ending’, as there can be a ‘Bad ending’ if you fail to reach the end of each stage in time. If you manage to defeat the final boss but your time runs out at 0:00, it means you have failed the mission to rescue your wife or son; the ending or path changes depending on whether or not you complete the mission.
Skills:
- Pressing < > + B buttons performs a spinning kick that deals a lot of damage
- Pressing A button makes you stronger under the mask’s effects. Your damage increases and the special move is more powerful than the spinning kick
- Pressing < > < > + B buttons performs a move where the man grows six arms from his body. The damage and range are very powerful
It’s very difficult to perform these moves on the console, but with practice you’ll get the hang of it :D
I don’t think there’s any need to go into detail about each stage, because naturally each one gets harder. The paths leading to the correct door are trickier, and you’re more likely to get lost if you’re just playing casually.
The key is always to try and make the most of the powerful attacks and the way the zombies appear from the ceiling; by manipulating where they land, I can prevent the character from having to retreat. This is particularly evident in Stage 3 (Mansion 3rd floor) because I try to use the zombies’ spawn patterns to my advantage.
In Stage 4 (Mansion Basement) there’s a room where giant hands come out of the floor; I had to take damage to save time because if I try to avoid them I waste more time. The fight against the final boss was very tough, but I optimised it as best I could.
I don’t think I have anything else to add, but I’d like to thank
EZGames69 for taking the initiative to help me make this run. Both he and I enjoyed the game, and I hope you enjoy it as much as we did.
We’re open to constructive criticism to help us improve this movie.
I’ll leave it up to you to suggest screenshots; I can’t be bothered to do it myself.
Darkman425: Let me go ahead and judge the end of Rick's no good, very bad McMansion hell.
Darkman425: I was curious about how the Stage X system works and thankfully
The Cutting Room Floor's notes page on the game has got me covered on that front, alongside how the ending flags work. From the time thresholds seen, it's definitely faster to complete the later Stage X sections than waiting out the time in Stages 3 & 4 (3rd Floor and Basement, respectively). There's also a few version differences between the US and Japanese versions but the only real notable ones are that the roundhouse kick in the JP version was changed into the more powerful spin kick in the US version, and that the JP version has moves that drain the big Rick meter that were changed to not drain in the US version.
Now that's out of the way, the per room optimizations look well done with the monster and meter management. Nice work!
Accepting to Standard. I don't feel like this needs a "best ending" branch since it's time dependent but I can discuss with the publishers about that if needed.
