Honestly, I feel we could do a better job of utilizing timeouts on discord as well. Still feels like we're stuck in all or nothing mentalities.

I would like to make a comment on the issue of game bans and the judgement of what games should or should not be permitted.
Per the rules:
In keeping with our Site Rules for user conduct, we strictly disallow games that promote targeted harassment, violence, and bigotry towards specific individuals and/or groups. This generally only applies to unlicensed and homebrew games, though some older official releases may fall under this if the depicted content is graphic enough.
Obviously the final sentence leaves room for interpretation, but I wanted to make sure that the rules at least attempt to make clear the lines between offensive content that might require a content warning and content that deserves an outright ban, and where it lies on the moderators’ and administrators’ discretion. For example (THIS IS NOT AN ARGUMENT FOR OR AGAINST THESE SPECIFIC GAMES NOR ATTEMPTING A DIRECT COMPARISON OF THEIR CONTENT), Hong Kong 97, a bootleg game that was intentionally made to be awful, was recently banned for its depiction of genocide of Chinese people. Pico’s School, an early Flash game about a school shooting that also features various offensive stereotypes, was used as a springboard for the introduction of content warnings, and the biggest reason for a submission of it being rejected was its optimization, not the game’s content, which was subject to debate in the submission’s discussion. The Classroom, another Flash game, depicts suicide, abuse, and also a school shooting specifically as an act of revenge against a teacher. It was published with a content warning. There are other examples, like Alien Hominid having fat-shaming, Tom Sawyer (the Square game for NES) having blackface, etc., so there needs to be a clearer message as to what is considered “promotion of unacceptable content that warrants a game to be prohibited” and what is considered “content to be given a warning for”. We cannot and should not give the idea to people that the moderation of offensive content in games that are TASed is arbitrary.
Obviously, this is a very difficult problem to square! Everyone reacts to certain content differently, which is why the content warnings were established in the first place. I just wanted to give my input in the hopes that it shapes future decisions. I hope that I’ve established that I’m not trying to approach this in bad faith or in a way that makes it appear as if I’m complaining about a particular game being banned or not banned or criticizing any specific moderation decisions.
I understand there may have been discussion of this nature when the HK97 retraction was made, I just didn’t want to necropost on that when this thread specifically about moderation was made now.

This is very interesting, it makes a lot of sense and i had not thought about it... There are a handful of games where these experiences are being told about and it's not necessarily a work of hate, just the presentation of real situations that exist. I'd also like for TASVideos to not lose content for these games even though they might be kinda stupid games.
Separately, I'd also like to voice some concern about how trigger happy the Staff seems with the bans or at least with the threats of them. It feels like complaining about bad practices or handling of situations are considered insults to people, when they're not. If you're gonna equate complaining about your behavior to calling you names, i feel like you become incapable of receiving criticism. While I haven't been banned, i've felt like some could have abused this against me when i voiced my complaints.
The worst part is not feeling safe to write this and having to constantly rewrite in the hopes of not angering someone for using the wrong expression.
I want all good TAS inside TASvideos, it's my motto.
TAS i'm interested:
Megaman series, specially the RPGs! Where is the mmbn1 all chips TAS we deserve? Where is the Command Mission TAS?
i'm slowly moving away from TASing fighting games for speed, maybe it's time to start finding some entertainment value in TASing.

Can you provide any examples where moderation has done this?
EDIT: From my personal view, moderation has definitely gotten more strict compared to where it was 5+ years ago, but I'm not sure it's necessarily strict compared to the internet at large. TASVideos 5+ years ago had users trying to take things into their own hands when they saw behavior that they felt was inappropriate or just lots of heated arguments. Staff itself is more heavily moderated compared to where it was years ago as well.

If any staff member abused their position to dish out unfair bans, they would be immediately removed from staff. Yes it's technically possible for a single moderator to ban any user arbitrarily, but the rest of us would not sit idly by and let it happen if it was done without sufficient justification.

I appreciate the thought you've put into your post. During situations in which we end up banning someone, there is often a similar kind of period in which we thoroughly discuss the steps that should be taken and what precisely should be said. Especially in more difficult situations, we will even post full drafts of how we wish to address someone and ask for others to review it and offer suggestions before finally sending it. This helps ensure we're all aware of how we're going to move forward, and helps ourselves to ensure we're getting our thoughts across in a clear and decisive way.
It's also worth noting that in more obvious cases of spam, homo/transphobia, hate speech, etc. there may not be any discussion before the ban since it's immediately clear it's not acceptable and should be dealt with swiftly.
This thread is for people, acting in good faith, to raise questions or concerns about how we moderate. If a person's intent is to sew ill-will towards us or to drum up vague/false claims to further their own agenda, then we will take appropriate action against them. Otherwise if the intent is to be constructive then we're fine with receiving criticisms. With that in mind, having specific examples would go a long way in being able to address your concerns.
Is there a clear cut limit to the policy of banning people for their activity outside of the site? Has this user banned on the SA2B thread been confrontational towards Tasvideos members directly or are we getting people banned for personal beliefs they're not enforcing on others?

I don't recall having seen bad interactions on Tasvideos with this user and i have voiced this a few times already, where has this user being transphobic on the site or at least confrontational towards Tasvideos members? Take your time to answer this, i understand there might be somethign i haven't seen but i'm also concerned staff might be trying to be "internet justice cops" to the members for behavior that is non-confrontational, which is more absurd if it's done outside of the community scope.

Let's see if i can convey this in a more meaningful way. If you actually had bad behavior inside the site, this discussion wouldn't happen. You don't see me questioning the banning of a few others like the logan guy with many accounts.
The foundation of the “nazi bar” concept is weak because it depends on a smear word being treated as if it were a precise diagnosis. Once a term is used so loosely that it can mean “literal fascist,” “political opponent,” or “person I want removed,” it stops being a moral safeguard and becomes a social weapon. That is not principled moderation; it is guilt by label.
I understand you don't approve the user communication outside of this site. I think it's pretty reasonable to enforce the behavior of all members here on this site to be polite. However inside the site's grounds, the user is being directly insulted( being called transphobic is something bad in my book) but the user is not being agressive towards others.
The rebuke is simple: the “nazi bar” idea pretends to be a rule against extremism, but in degraded form it functions as a permission structure for ideological purges of people who disagree in some opinions but don't really interact in a negative way.
If the user isn't interacting in a negative way with a trans person here, it doesn't make sense to me. Sounds like some Minority Report stuff on fighting crime before it's supposedly gonna happen. What do you think?

Has this user banned on the SA2B thread been confrontational?
the user is not being aggressive towards others.
Holding some beliefs are inherently aggressive, confrontational, antagonistic, and threatening to others. Guilt by label might be a bad thing to impose upon someone if they didn't self-assign that label of their own volition.
What you're doing is known as concern trolling, its transparently obvious and common across the internet and the arguments have been thoroughly considered before. If its draconian and authoritarian, I say good. I want the authority to reject nazis and transphobes. That sounds like an expressly good positive thing to me. I want the slope to be slippery enough that these people slide off. I have yet to see evidence that the slope's slippery-ness is being mismanaged and overly-slippery. This is not a case that fits that description.
I am not staff i have no power, just my 2 cents perspective and opinion.

That's how Nazis usually normalize themselves into communities. It's the entire point of the Nazi Bar story. The Nazis that show up to your bar may not be being Nazis at first, but that doesn't mean that will remain that way in the future.

As a person who was on the receiving end, lol, yes.
There's much I would love to share, but the thing about itsPersonal is they; delete their own messages, change handles a bunch of times, manipulate others to be under their control, and even just outright lie.
You would have to take my word on their comments, and I can't be bothered wasting my time on that.
But you know what I do have access to?
The time they decided to abuse SHiFT in relation to Battle for Bikini Bottom which lead to these:
https://xcancel.com/shiftposting/status/1320029654942625793https://xcancel.com/shiftposting/status/1320458262555316224 (this one might be bugged so try this one)
Anyways KusogeMan, since you're here defending a bigoted, truscum, manipulating, Nazi.
Why didn't you bother defending the other one?
Also let me point out something whilst we're here with one of your other comments "If the user isn't interacting in a negative way with a trans person here".
Cool, I'll just happily have my DMs open and get an onslaught of abuse and never report it to Staff, cause screw me I guess.
Not like I've been weirdly grossed out by a user on TASVideos or been given death threats in the past by multiple here.
So let me keep it simple.
Don't be a dick here, don't be a dick elsewhere, just don't be a dick.
A person who is truscum is a person who should not be tolerated for a single second.
A person who is a Nazi, should be shown the door, at least that's more courteous than what they would do or say about us.
Also I would love to spout random facts about this and with one of the comments I noticed.
However, itsPersonal is not worth my time, nor anyone else's, and if you want to continue defending a Nazi, there's the door. Get out.

KusogeMan did you use chatgpt for your post? I feel like if you want to discuss something then you shouldnt have ai help you and instead type what YOU think.
Wow. There's so much to unpack.
First, no, i'm not doing concern trolling. Where is this coming from?
It makes no sense to have a question about "why don't i defend x person?", i'm not keeping up with all the banning here. I'm not a lawyer here trying to defend all the banned users, most of the bans seem pretty reasonable. This one struck me as unusual for the interactions i've seen myself.
I'm concerned about people who have different views that are not agressive towards anyone at all being the next step in banning. I'm trying to make sure the staff doesn't start banning someone for being Christian in their facebook profile or Trump supporter on twitter or Muslim on instagram.
Second, i did type what i think. Not AI.
Third, if the user has interacted in a negative way with the users here, than we don't need this discussion and the matter is settled. What i don't want for this site is to have people being banned for being not progressive enough to somebody's taste. That's all. I don't need Spike to show me the DMs of the exact insult received.
I want all good TAS inside TASvideos, it's my motto.

Depends on how much intolerance towards groups of people those people from your examples consistently express. If someone's whole shtick is "Jesus loves everyone, except for people with green eyes, screw them!", that won't be the case of that user not being progressive enough to fit our personal tastes. It would be an example of someone who will find reasons to be mean on our site as well. We're not obliged to wait for it to happen, especially since many mean things can happen well before it becomes known.
Intolerance should not be tolerated. This has nothing to do with one's actual religion or even political views.
Warning: When making decisions, I try to collect as much data as possible before actually deciding. I try to abstract away and see the principles behind real world events and people's opinions. I try to generalize them and turn into something clear and reusable. I hate depending on unpredictable and having to make lottery guesses. Any problem can be solved by systems thinking and acting.
In this discussion, as well as in the Discord chats, I'm perplexed not by the situation itself or its outcome, but by the lack of formalized reasoning. I have read a lot of hate comments, learned many ugly terms, processed a lot of excuses explained by sociology, faced a lot of users who have plenty of time chating, but no time to elaborate their position or describing it in philosophical abstract terms, but seen no formalized reasoning.
All this looks like a justification of self-will, because, by looking through the raw facts, I personally may conclude that the player has been banned for nothing related to TASVideos. From this perspective, KusogeMan's position is totally understandable.
Thread #27396: itspersonnal
In this threads, there are proofs that the person has been doing something amoral* somewhere else, but not within TASVideos.

To have this formalized, and I don't care if it will be done retrospectively, please scratch the answers to the following questions on some "rock" and place it somewhere so everyone sees it. For example, when a user registers on TASVideos.org.
1. What are the boundaries of this community? Because it doesn't look like it's limited to this site and the pair of Discord servers (TASBot Labs and TASVideos).
2. Which social behaviour is considered unacceptable in scope of these boundaries? In explicit terms, not through describing how sensitive the TASVideos community is.
Collect and provide some compliance and refer to its violation. Is it better to do like that, instead of doing vigilantism and explaining it to everyone, like these are now the new rules of the game?

TASing is like making a film: only the best takes are shown in the premier.

The general impression I get in this topic is that some people are against the principle of banning people based on off-site conduct, not that there wasn't a written rule for it.
As for the reasoning, it's pretty straightforward - just because people are active outside TASVideos or say certain things outside TASVideos doesn't mean it can't become a problem inside TASVideos. We're talking about a user that has been on our site for many years, has had personal connections with many users including staff/admins, has caused deeply rooted problems through said connections, and now they're the centerpiece of a TAS production that has been making the rounds on our site and discord. At that point it is our problem to deal with, and therefore admins and moderation have plenty reason to act.
We're not here to witch-hunt people for anything vaguely objectionable. But when the elephant is in the room, we can't stand idly by and ignore it either.
